West Virginia Football Recruiting Update (3/9/15)

West Virginia is still in the mix for some high-level talent despite heavy competition from top schools.

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

Spring football is almost here and soon all eyes will be on position battles and unit performances. But recruiting will continue as it always does and West Virginia will continue to stay in the mix for top talent. Some of the top talent is keeping an eye on the Mountaineers despite heavy interest from other programs. There is still a long way to go, but WVU is still in the mix.

Michael Ferns, FB/TE transfer from Michigan, is a name that most fans are already familiar with but keep an eye out for his younger brother. Brendan Ferns, 6'3" 225 lbs. linebacker, is a highly regarded four star prospect that has the potential to be an impact player on the next level. He can play inside or outside with the speed to get to the edge and the strength to stuff the run. There is heavy competition for his talents as he has offers from nearly every major program in the country. He may still go his own way but it certainly doesn't hurt to have his brother on campus telling him about life as a Mountaineer. West Virginia has been in the picture for  for a long time with his first visit to campus and subsequent offer coming around this time a year ago.  But now his brother is in a Mountaineer uniform which certainly could renew his interest and he is also close with WVU basketball commit Chase Harler. The more visits the better and hopefully the Mountaineers continue to develop a relationship and get this guy back on campus during 2015. I'm sure the uniforms will still fit.

Another big-time prospect to keep an eye on is Dwayne Haskins. Most don't consider WVU to be a contender for his services, but the staff recruits the Maryland area well and continues to recruit him. Haskins is a 6'3" pro-style quarterback that will remind many of Geno Smith. He has 30 plus offers from all over the country and they are well deserved. The kid, simply put, has an arm on him. But you can be the judge, take a look at the tape.

His recruitment is another one that will last a long while yet, so don't hold your breath. The staff however is recruiting hard and early for both Haskins and Ferns right now, which is what could keep the Mountaineers in the mix despite the flurry of programs after them. At least if a re-tweet is anything to go by it looks like Dwayne can picture himself in a WVU uniform, hopefully the staff keeps up the good work and it becomes a reality.
