We just found out that the #5 seed West Virginia Mountaineers will be playing the #12 seed Buffalo Bulls on Friday in their opening game in the NCAA tournament.
Here's a quick look at the Bulls:
Overall Record: 23-9
How they got in: Buffalo defeated Central Michigan 89-84 on Saturday night to win the MAC championship and earn an automatic bid.
Head Coach: Bobby Hurley. Hurley is 42-19 in two seasons with the Bulls. He is most well-known for his time spent as a player for the Duke Blue Devils in the early 1990s.
Player to watch: Justin Moss. Moss, a 6'7 junior, averaged 17.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season.
KenPom ranking: 54
RPI: 30
BPI: 55
Common opponents: None.
Competing with the best: In their second game of the season, the Bulls traveled to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (also in WVU's region). The Bulls put up a fight, and led 38-33 before falling 71-52. Later on in nonconference play, they traveled to Wisconsin and also led the Badgers at the half, 27-26, before falling by 12.
This is a tough draw for the Mountaineers, and it's sure to be a trendy upset pick. Doug Gottlieb quickly took the Bulls when the draw was announced. Should be a good one. We'll have the usual game preview later this week.
