So here's what happened last week in the Big 12:
- Two teams suffered their first losses of the season.
- Texas survived a scare from Connecticut.
- The Mountaineers, Cowboys, and Horned Frogs kept on winning.
- Kansas State let all of West Virginia down by being blown out by "school that shall not be mentioned."
Let's get to the rankings:
1. Kansas Jayhawks, 5-1 (previous rank: 1)
The Jayhawks have been busy. They played 4 games last week, won all of them and claimed the Orlando Classic Championship.
Last week: Defeated Rider 87-60 (11/24), Defeated Rhode Island 86-60 (11/27), Defeated Tennessee 82-67 (11/28), Defeated #20 Michigan State 61-56 (11/30)
This week: Vs. Florida (12/5)
2. Texas Longhorns, 6-0 (previous rank: 2)
It took a Jonathan Holmes three in the final seconds to defeat the Connecticut Huskies in Storrs, but the Longhorns keep winning even without Isaiah Taylor. They have a huge test this week, traveling to Lexington to take on the #1 ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Friday. Spoiler Alert: If Texas wins that one, they're moving to the top of this list.
Last week: Defeated St. Francis PA 78-46 (11/25), Defeated UCONN 55-54 (11/30)
This week: Vs. UT-Arlington (12/2), @ #1 Kentucky (12/5)
3. West Virginia Mountaineers, 7-0 (previous rank: 4)
WVU had a good week, dominating two inferior opponents and avoiding a letdown after their championship in Puerto Rico. They'll get a challenge on Thursday as they host LSU. The Mountaineers are about to get a huge boost to their depth as both Brandon Watkins and BillyDee Williams are close to returning to action.
Last week: Defeated VMI 103-72 (11/26), Defeated College of Charleston 86-57 (11/29)
This week: Vs. LSU (12/4), @ Northern Kentucky (12/7)
4. Iowa State Cyclones, 3-1 (previous rank: 3)
The Cyclones suffered their first loss of the season after falling to Maryland on Tuesday. The Terrapins held Georges Niang to 10 points on 4-14 shooting.
Last week: Defeated Alabama 84-74 (11/24), Lost to Maryland 72-63 (11/25)
This week: Vs. Lamar (12/2) Vs. Arkansas (12/4)
5. Oklahoma Sooners, 4-2 (previous rank: 5)
The Sooners played three games in three days last week. Their first two were impressive wins over #22 UCLA and Butler, but they ran out of gas against #2 Wisconsin after trailing by only one at halftime. I'm not going to drop them for losing to the #2 ranked team in the country on the third night of a back-to-back-to-back. So far Houston transfer TaShawn Thomas has not put up the numbers he was expected to. Through six games he is only averaging 8 PPG and 5.7 RPG.
Last week: Defeated #22 UCLA 75-65 (11/26), Defeated Butler 59-46 (11/27), Lost to #2 Wisconsin 69-56 (11/28)
This week: Vs. Missouri (12/5)
6. Oklahoma State Cowboys, 6-0 (previous rank: 8)
They still haven't played anyone, but it's hard to ignore Oklahoma State's 6-0 start. Every Cowboy victory has came by at least 13 points.
Last week: Defeated Oregon State 66-53 (11/24), Defeated Tulsa 73-58 (11/26)
This week: Vs. North Texas (12/3), @ South Carolina (12/6)
7. Baylor Bears, 5-1 (previous rank: 6)
Baylor also fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, losing by 8 to Illinois after a dominating win over Memphis.
Last week: Defeated Stephen F. Austin 67-51 (11/24), Defeated Memphis 71-47 (11/27), Lost to Illinois 62-54 (11/28)
This week: Vs. Texas Southern (12/1), @ Vanderbilt (12/4)
8. TCU Horned Frogs, 7-0 (previous rank: 9)
Who had TCU among the last four teams in the conference to lose a game? It's not like they've been through the gauntlet with their schedule, but 7-0 is 7-0. The Horned Frogs played four games in six days and didn't have a letdown. Impressive.
Last week: Defeated Mississippi Valley State 106-53 (11/24), Defeated Radford 74-50 (11/26), Defeated Bradley 57-49 (11/28), Defeated Mississippi State 61-52 (11/29)
This week: @ Ole Miss (12/4)
9. Kansas State Wildcats, 3-3 (previous rank: 7)
Really, Kansas State? Really?
I had the Wildcats ranked 11th in the first draft of this post.
Last week: Defeated Purdue 88-79 (11/24), Lost to #3 Arizona 72-68 (11/25), Lost to PITT 70-47 (11/26)
This week: Vs. Purdue (11/24)
10. Texas Tech Red Raiders, 4-1 (previous rank: 10)
The Red Raiders fought back from a 32-16 halftime deficit and a 9 point deficit in the final minutes to grab a comeback win over Air Force.
Last week: Defeated Northwestern State 75-64 (11/24), Defeated Air Force 63-62 (11/30)
This week: Vs. Auburn (12/3)
