Juwan Staten had the early hot hand as the "en fuego" Mountaineers shot an insane 56% from the field en route to an easy victory over the cold shooting Eagles from Georgia Southern.
OK, maybe it wasn't an insane percentage...but considering where this team was with the shooting woes that they had last season, you'll understand my hyperbole. WVU raced out to a 29 point lead at the half on the backs of hot shooting and a Georgia Southern team that was turnover prone. And as well as the Mountaineers shot, the Eagles only shot 38%.
Staten led five Mountaineers scoring in double figures with 20 point and several beautiful assists. I can't say enough about how impressed I was with Staten. As I mentioned in the game thread, he's like a completely new player, completely in control of the offense and playing with extreme confidence. Hell, he finally hit his first three as a Mountaineer tonight.
Terry Henderson and Devin Williams both chipped in 16 to go along with 15 from Eron Harris and 11 from Gary Browne.
The biggest impression that I took away from watching this game is that this team will be SOOOO much more enjoyable to watch develop as the season goes on. Whereas last season's team was pins to the eyes terrible, this one will be fun to follow.
Both teams move along in the Cancun Classic, with WVU back in action on Saturday against Presbyterian College at 1:30 pm in Morgantown.
