According to a report by MetroNews, Steve Dunlap has been let go from the WVU football staff. Just after the regular season completed against Kansas, cornerbacks coach Daron Roberts was the first to be relieved of his duties.
Dunlap served the WVU football program for 22 years under three head coaches, including a ten year stint as defensive coordinator under Coach Nehlen and most recently special teams coordinator under Coach Holgorsen. An alumnus of WVU, Dunlap still holds the record for tackles in a season (190, 1974).
So far, the staff shakeup includes the firings of Dunlap and Roberts plus the shuffling of duties for Keith Patterson and Joe DeForest. Patterson was promoted to sole defensive coordinator following the season, while DeForest still coaches the safeties. DeForest is expected to take over as special teams coordinator, the same role he filled for eleven seasons at Oklahoma State.
WVU also has a strength & conditioning position to fill after assistant Mark Smith left to take over as head S&C coach at Southern Mississippi.
What further staff shakeups are in store for the Mountaineers? Who will the new hires be to replace the departing folks? Coach Holgorsen said answers would be revealed shortly after the 2013 AFCA Conference concludes on January 9th.
