Today, we kick off a new feature on Smoking Musket: a weekly poll concerning the Mountaineers upcoming opponent.
Next Sunday, September 4, the Mountaineers take the field for the first time under new head coach, Dana Holgorsen. After one of the most tumultuous offseasons in Mountaineer history, the game will be the dawn of a new era in Morgantown, and the first opponent is our cross-state rivals (sort of), Marshall. It will be the debut of Dana Holgorsen's high-powered offense. He was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma St. last season. He was there for one season before coming to Morgantown as a head-coach-in-waiting. Before Holgorsen arrived at Ok. St., they were ranked 61st nationally in offense. After one season, they were ranked no.1 in the nation in total offense, no. 2 in passing offense, and no. 3 in scoring offense. Where did WVU fall in those rankings last season? No. 58, no. 62, and no. 76 respectively.
Holgorsen has turned offenses around in one season, and if the Spring Game was any indication, it looks like he could do the same for the Mountaineers.
Every week, we'll ask a question about that week's upcoming game. It could be pertinent, or it could be irreverent. So, please, vote, and feel free to discuss the game and the question in the comment section. So here's the first question. It's an easy one to kind of give you a feel of what this is about. Our question pertains to Geno Smith and the new offense.
