The Shotgun/Throwdown: Wednesday (10/19/11) Edition

New, 2 comments

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Otter Creek Oktoberfest.

Everyone (including us, stick around) is talking about revenge for last year's game, but Coach Holgorsen is having none of it. He, sticking to his routine, is only worried about winning another conference game. There is, of course, the requisite expansion news and reactions as well. Back on the basketball side, with the Big East Media Day today, the press released their BE rankings, which we also have.

WVU coach is ignoring Big East downsizing - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
West Virginia coach Bob Huggins arguably offers the best quotes among Big East Conference coaches. He's unorthodox, witty and brutally honest about the breakup of what's been regarded as the best basketball conference in the country.

In front of a raucous crowd the West Virginia men’s soccer team handed No. 1 Connecticut its first loss of the season with a 2-0 shutout win on Tuesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

News of Note:

Winning Is On Holgorsen's Mind, Not Revenge - WVMETRONEWS.COM
As for the players, the coach said during his weekly news conference that just winning a conference game should be enough of a motivator. “If we need anymore motivation than that, then we’re out of luck because that’s all I got for them this week and that should be plenty,” said Holgorsen.

Syracuse will bring the blitz to WVU - PPG
"To say they're not going to pressure is the same as saying that we're not going to pass the ball," said coach Dana Holgorsen.

WVU facing a road challenge with Syracuse - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"You just want to have the same mindset as if we were playing at home," senior defensive tackle Julian Miller said. "You don't want to let it bother you playing at their place."

No. 11 Mountaineers focused on task at hand against ‘Cuse - Daily Athenaeum
Coincidentally, the Mountaineers were 5-1 last season when they faced the Orange – a game won by Syracuse, 19-14.

WVU motivated to avoid another letdown vs. ‘Cuse - Daily Athenaeum
The team knows what happened last year was disappointing because, in the players' minds, the better team lost the game.

Syracuse another challenge for WVU - Register-Herald
West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen didn’t view much tape of last year’s 19-14 loss to Syracuse. He didn’t need too to realize exactly what went wrong.
