University at Buffalo coach Turner Gill’s an intensely private man who keeps his life and his business dealings to himself. But I do remember him informing me when he was hired that football isn’t a 24-hour gig. There’s a time to be at the office and a time to be home with family. He tells his coaching staff and his players the same.

So it couldn’t have gone over well when Syracuse Athletic Director Daryl Gross called around midnight Thursday to ask Gill if he’d submit to another interview. I’m not speaking for Gill, but it’s a little disconcerting that an AD who’s known for three weeks that he needs a coach suddenly develops a sense of late-night urgency. And I’m not saying that’s precisely the reason Gill removed his name from consideration, but a midnight phone call regarding the job search doesn’t strike me as the "fit" to which Gill constantly alludes.
