Tavon Austin caught 13 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns in West Virginia's 31-21 win over Maryland. The 13 receptions matched a school record set last week by Stedman Bailey. The receiving yardage was the second-highest of Austin's career and marked the second consecutive game, and ninth in his career, in which he has recorded over 100 yards. Austin's touchdown receptions covered 44, 24 and 34 yards, giving him five scoring catches on the season and 22 for his career. The senior set the WVU career record for receptions in the fourth quarter and ended the game with 208. He is now tied at No. 2 on the career touchdown receptions chart with 22 and also moved up to No. 2 in career receiving yards with 2,469.

In a stark contrast to WVU's previous conference affiliation (0 ranked teams), WVU is amongst five other Big 12 members being ranked by the coaches SID's preseason poll. Oklahoma is the highest at #4, followed by WVU at #11, Texas at #15, TCU at #17, Oklahoma State at #19 and Kansas State at #21. Baylor is 6th out.

"The Sooners received 32 of 41 first-place votes and totaled 396 points. West Virginia was chosen second with 339 points and garnered seven first-place tallies. Texas was picked third, followed by defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma State in fourth. TCU and Kansas State each received a first-place vote and finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Baylor, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas rounded out the poll."

The Big Ten and Pac-12 aren't the only major football conferences with official buddies now. The SEC and Big 12 have linked arms -- setting up a "new January bowl tradition," as Mike Slive calls it -- pairing their conference champions or runners-up beginning in 2014.
While SEC and Big 12 champs missing the playoffs would be a very, very rare event, the importance here is that the two have effectively created another Rose Bowl, and one that would quite often trump the Granddaddy, at least in terms of highly-ranked football teams. It also creates a very clearly defined upper tier in college football, with everyone from the ACC on down all but walled off from the highest level.

Not surprisingly, Mon County Circuit Court Judge Clawges has refused a stay motion by the Big East, which means the case can move forward in WV without waiting for things to play out in the RI court. He also issued a ruling refusing a dismissal motion by the Big East.
