A Twist on Tailgating

My friend Chopper has a family business in the Atlanta area called One Screw Loose that makes craft jellies and rubs. "How does jelly apply to tailgating" you ask? Well, most of the jellies are made with craft beers, bourbons, wine and hot peppers and can make awesome wings, dips, and marinades. It would certainly set a tailgate apart to include some of their flavors (Brewha Habenero for instance) rather than the traditional beer and brats. In addition to making kickass jelly, they are in the midst of a kickstarter campaign to try and raise money for an automatic canner. Please check it out, and if you feel inclined, contribute to this small business. If you can't contribute, please spread the word and maybe try out a jar of a flavor of your choice. The flavors available are listed below:

App to keep track of Mountaineers in NFL & NBA

Hey all,

A buddy of mine recently created an app called "Draftpedia" that tracks NFL and NBA draft data, rosters, and statistics from the last 40+ years. It lets you sort the data in a lot of different ways - one way is by college so you can see and track every pro that attended West Virginia in a single list (which then allows you to see year-by-year stats for every player). It should be a great reference tool for sports history and random trivia.

If you're interested, here's the download link for iPhones/iPads (it's free):
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/draftpedia/id562159411?mt=8

----------------------------------------------------------

Here's a press release from the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20130417-908281.html?mod=googlenews_wsj):

Draftpedia's iPhone App Launches for All NBA & NFL Draft Fans

SANTA MONICA, CA--(Marketwired - April 17, 2013) - Draftpedia, the only iPhone app with NFL & NBA draft history, is now available free in the App Store. Built exclusively for mobile, Draftpedia has 30+ years of draft history, past team rosters, draft info for every player's alma mater and statistics for every current player.

Roommates David Rabie and Joe Sarafian hatched the idea for Draftpedia on the couch during a Clipper game. Discussing Kenyon Martin's historically poor draft class, Joe asked why consumers had to rely on searching Wikipedia for the answer. "As Gen Y sports enthusiasts, what has driven us this entire time is to build an app that makes our lives easier," said David Rabie, Co-Founder.

"Given the competition, we knew that our edge would come with speed, efficiency and design. We built a database of information that is stored within the app -- eliminating any loading time between screens and allowing the app to function offline," said Co-Founder Joe Sarafian. The information is presented in clear, easy-to-use tables and is all linkable, offering multiple ways for users to navigate within the app.

Launching just in time for the 2013 NFL Draft, Draftpedia is the ultimate reference guide for any sports fan looking for historical data including:

-- 40+ Years of Past Drafts

-- 30 Years of Team Rosters

-- Every Division 1 College's NFL/NBA Alumni

-- Breakdown by Nationality (NBA) and Pick (NFL)

-- Statistics for Every Current Player

"Next time you're debating a player's alma mater or comparing draft classes, Draftpedia is your best solution," said Rabie.

About Draftpedia

Draftpedia consolidates information about past NFL & NBA drafts in a convenient and fast iPhone app. It has every draft year of the modern era, lists of professional players from every D1 College, past rosters for every team and statistics for every current player. Founded in 2012, Draftpedia is based in Santa Monica, CA. For more information, visit www.draftpedia.com.

Will 2013 Be Holgorsen's Last Season?

Coach Holgorsen - Could 2013 be his last season at WVU and his doom at ever being considered as Head Football Coach again?

Yes, Holgorsen brought his "Air Raid" to WVU, but in the process WVU lost its ability to run the ball, and the defense fell completely apart. Going into his 3rd season at WVU, Holgorsen is working with his 3rd group of Defensive Coaches, and his 2nd group of Offensive Coaches. It appears that even his so called friends either cannot coach, or refuse to coach for him. Holgorsen is definitely a coach in the "Hot Seat" in 2013.

Linebacker’s W.Va. plans reviewed after arrest - Brandon Golson

Brandon Golson was arrested in South Caroline in Jan 2013 prior to signing his LOI with WVU.
West Virginia Director of Football Communications Mike Montoro said Thursday that charges against Brandon Golson will be reviewed before a decision is made on the former Calhoun County linebacker’s status with the Morgantown university.

"The process is that the coach will gather facts and make a decision from there," Montoro said.

Montoro said it’s not clear if WVU Head Football Coach Dana Holgorsen had been made aware of the charges against a player WVSports.com called an "edge rusher" signed in the 2013 class.

What do you think hurts recruiting in basketball more?

With a post season birth to the NCAA Touney looking all but shot, I want to look forward and hope for better days for this Mountaineers basketball program. As I sit on the couch and watch losses pile up, I begin to wonder about future recruiting.

2 things concern me the most in regards to recruiting: first the move to the Big 12 from the Big East and second Hugg's coaching style.

The move from the Big East to the Big 12 is obvious. Not playing ranked teams multiple times a week, no tournament held at MSG, great recruiting grounds where we used to play etc etc etc.

Secondly, I believe what might start to hurt recruiting is Huggs coaching style. I sit on my couch and watch him during timeouts, at the end of halves and after yanking the player while play is still going on and just screaming in the players faces. Also, there is the whole doghouse issue where players seem to find themselves sitting and watching multiple games at a time. It almost appears that he holds grudges against certain players. My first thought is, do I want someone like that coaching me or better yet coaching one of my sons? There are plenty of coaches at major basketball programs that teach without yanking and embarrassing/berating their players. I don't know if this style is what recruits are looking for in a coach.

With all that being said, I'm glad that Huggs is our coach, he is a great coach, just look at his record, he has won everywhere. But with this being said...I am starting to have concerns.

What do you think? Are these issues or not for perspective recruits? Is there anything I missed?

WVU's financial windfall eases pain

of a rough football season that had such a promising start and the inevitable "long" basketball season we're about to endure in our inaugural Big XII campaign.

Let's run through the numbers again: TV contract money= 20M annually

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-07/big-12-conference-signs-tv-contract-with-espn-fox-through-2025.html

3rd tier multimedia rights=5M annually

http://blogs.dailymail.com/wvu/2012/05/09/more-on-the-third-tier/

Playoff revenue=(just announced in last 24 hrs by Brett McMurphy) 9M annually

http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/61349/why-the-big-12-wont-expand

http://www.mrsec.com/2012/07/report-champions-bowl-to-ink-80m-contract-with-espn/

These numbers should ease the pain from below average on field (on court) performances in the 2012-13 season. Do we realize what these numbers would be if we were to remain in the Big East? The difference between these numbers and the ACC is even HUGE. I was a proponent of conference realignment including Big XII expanding to around 12-14 teams, however, I am no longer a fan of expansion for the Big XII conference. There just isn't an Ohio State, USC or Alabama that could be had in the expansion game that would boost $$ for the Big XII at this time, w/ the possible exception of FSU (who will likely head for the B1G). AS LONG AS THE GoR "sticks"** then my preference is for WVU to build infrastructure, facilites, etc. and grow in these next 13 years in the Big XII.

**The GoR will "stick". #1: B1G and Pac-12 also have this arrangement and it would be foolish for one of them to "test" the rights knowing their institutions could be picked off as well.

Conference Realignment

Do any of you get the feeling that conference realignment is going to turn into B1G vs SEC? I predict that both conferences are headed for a 20 team conference (4 pods of 5) and there's nothing the Big XII and Pac-12 can really do to stop it. The TV revenues in both of those leagues are going to go through the roof and will dwarf that of the other 2 conferences.

I wonder if the Big XII is looking to expand? You keep hearing that it must be the right situation and the right teams so that the $$ increase per university and I completely agree with this. Adding Louisville, Cincinnati or some other lower tier program isn't going to move the needle the way adding Florida State, Clemson or Miami would do so. In fact, adding UL, UC, etc. would most likely decrease the $$ each university would receive annually due to the current nature of the TV contract.

It just seems like a no-brainer that the Big XII needs to be proactive and gobble up the above 3 mentioned programs (along w/ an unidentified additional team).

Look at the following prediction and tell me it's far-fetched:

B1G: Add BC, UVA, UNC, Duke, GT and one other program

Pros: BC brings enormous NE market (more $$ for BTN), lots of content for the BTN (especially BC hockey)

UVA brings unbelievable academic program, state of VA for BTN; UNC and Duke bring everything (except football) that matters including best rivalry in college sports on hardwood; GT brings GREAT academics and huge ATL market (biggest airport in nation) for BTN.

SEC: Add VPI, NCSU, Clemson, FSU (perhaps they stop at 18? would they add Miami (which isn't an SEC fit)?)....All these schools fit the SEC model so well it's not even funny. The only negative would be the gentlemen's agreement (where USC, UF would oppose inclusion of in-state rivals). I can guarantee that FSU and Clemson would prefer the SEC over any other conference (except maybe the B1G).

It just seems like this is going to end up as a pissing contest between Slive and Delaney and I'm not sure Bowlsby can do anything about it. Thoughts?

How Will the Big 12 Treat the Mountaineers?

The West Virginia Mountaineers are a team that both feels good about themselves, and has some realistic expectations. They have advanced to the NCAA tournament 5 years in a row, a school record, and should get there again this year. However, it will likely be a one and done if they do make it. Many major ranking organizations predict they will finish 6th in the Big 12. No one would suggest that is horrible, especially considering what they lost in the offseason, but hopefully it won't be too bumpy of a ride.

FRONTCOURT

There is going to be a transition period for this team as they get used to playing without Kevin Jones, who led the Big East in PPG (19.9) and RPG (10.9). Yet, coach Bob Huggins hopes that with the addition of Aaric Murray, a transfer from La Salle, things won't be as tough as they could be. Murray averaged 13.7 PPG and 7.2 RPG over two seasons before he transferred to West Virginia. Murray "can be a factor at the rim at both ends of the court," Huggins said. "He's running so much better, he'll be able to transition better. He shoots the ball well. We'll be able to do some of the same things with him that we did with Kevin." And already we can see not only part of the upcoming plan, but also part of what separates the elite coaches from everyone else: understanding your team. No matter how big of a loss Kevin jones is, he's gone. Work with the players you still have ad get the most out of them. Deniz Kilicli is going to be the other threat inside. He was third on the team in scoring last season, but needs to add some offensive repertoire to his game. He has a sweeping left hand hook shot that can be effective, but he also likes to foul. If he tightens up a little, he can work wonders for the Mountaineers.

BACKCOURT

Matt Humphrey is a newcomer from Boston College who may end up in the starting lineup. Huggins is definitely a fan of experience and he has the most on the team. There is also a chance that he could start three guards though.

AS much as Huggins likes Humphrey, Juwan Staten may end up being the key to the team. "He passes the ball so well," Huggins says. "He helps us get easy baskets. He can get it in the lane, he has good speed and good speed with the ball." Reports have been coming out of the locker room that Staten has stepped up as the team leader. Jabarie Hinds returns as a sophomore after a somewhat disappointing freshman season. He averaged only 7.4 PPG and shot a lowly 41.9% from the field. "He's gotten a lot better," says the coach. "He's worked on his shooting, plus he can get into the lane." Lets hope the coach is telling the truth and not just trying to be optimistic. The Mountaineers need to shore up their perimeter shooting and much of the hope for that rests with Hinds. If he can't step up the only other one on the roster who may be able to is freshman Terry Henderson.

Moving to the Big 12 will be a test for West Virginia. The team has high hopes, and they should fare better than the football team initially, but there may be a learning curve. The Big East was a good division so they are likely prepared well. The success or failure of their season will ultimately rest with whether or not Murray and Kilicli can play well together. That, and whether or not they can get some perimeter scoring.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are a team that both feels good about themselves, and has some realistic expectations.

Pissed at the Political Correct

Yes folks, I said pissed. As you can see, I am not politically correct! I am sure those with bladder control issues are now too embarrassed to leave home. Last week, I told a Blonde joke, and its possible thousand Blondes were so mortified they became Brunettes. I do not care! I am not politically correct!

Those West Virginians that complained about the antics of a spirited K-State fan should get over their inferiority complex, low self-esteem, quit complaining, and enjoy the comedic roast presented. I found it hilarious. I also plan to follow his antics as he roasts other teams on the K-State schedule.

I have found that people, white, black, brown, yellow, red, and even that so called purple SOB from K-State are very nice people once you get to know them.

Fortunately, this is America, we have freedom of speech, and since I am not politically correct, I have no problem calling the complainers big turds and have no sympathy for the butt holes that are offended. I think all of those that complained are a bigger pain in the butt than the K-State roast ever was.

Looking for Ryan Clarke

How a number one guy can fall so far out of favor is a shame. I really think Ryan can get the job done, and don't understand why he's buried so deep in the depth chart.

Has he let himself go? Is he in the doghouse for something he said or did?

I'm thrilled Buie did that well, and hope it continues, but while everyone's waiting for Alston to return, can't Ryan fulfill the power role?

Holgorsen and Huggins: Turning Men into Monsters

When head coach John Beilein recruited Joe Alexander, anyone with basketball knowledge knew you were getting a very solid player. After Beilein led the mountaineers to the NIT championship in the 2006-2007 season and left for the head coaching job at Michigan no one was to too angry at him because he did amazing things for our basketball program including leading a very memorable team to the Elite 8 and minutes away from a final 4. In hindsight, possibly the person who was angry the least at his departure, could be argued, was Joe Alexander. Not because Beilein wasn’t an excellent coach, but because of what Joe Alexander became, a monster.

After what started out as a very successful season for Joe under Beilein’s last year declined in the second half. After an 11-point performance versus Providence in early Feb, Alexander went without scoring over double-digits for the rest of the regular season and the Big East Tournament. Alexander also only totaled 18 points in the Mountaineers' NIT run. He averaged 10.3 points per game, 1.9 assists per game, and 4.3 rebounds per game for the season.

Enter Bob Huggins; He got Joe in the weight room and Joe went from 210lbs to 230lbs. He taught Joe to play with his back to the basket and he got Joe the ball in isolation so he could showcase his incredible athletic ability. He emphasized Defense and being a rebounding machine. The result? As the season went on Joe only got better. He scored 30 points 3 times that season. He had highlight reel dunks time and time again. He was named to the first team All-Big East squad. He put up gaudy numbers against storied programs like Uconn, Arizona, and Duke. By season’s end Alexander lead the team with 16.9ppg and 6.4 rpg. Alexander was second on the team with 1.5bpg and 3rd with 2.4 apg. Alexander’s stock rose so much that pro scouts couldn’t help but take notice. The following year Alexander skipped his senior season and declared himself eligible for the NBA draft. Joe Alexander was drafted 8th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks Pretty darn impressive for a new coach, a player with the will to succeed, and 1 season.

Moving to Football, when head Coach Bill Stewart recruited Geno Smith fans knew they were getting a very good football player. Getting some snaps as a freshman and becoming a starter as a true sophomore proved to be valuable for the rising star who was learning fast how to take over the offense from a long line of impressive quarterbacks who came before him. The offense was never what the staff and fans expected it to be and as Geno Smiths sophomore season ended WVU was looking to get back to that high octane offense they had under PatWhite/RichRod.

Enter Dana Holgorsen; Dana was widely known as one of the brighter offensive minds in college football. The numbers his teams have put up while he has had a say in the offense are jaw dropping. Under Dana, Geno learned the offense and learned it fast. He put his time in the film room and running routes with his receivers, he learned the importance of ball control and getting the ball in your play-makers hands. He was giving reigns of an offensive that has unlimited potential. He has been humble and modest giving praise to his teammates and coaches and he has been an absolute remarkable spokesman for the university and the State of West Virginia. Geno doesn’t have to say much, his numbers speak for themselves. Smith’s numbers have been eye-popping. He has completed 141 of 169 passes (83.4%) for 1,826 yards and 20 TDs with no interceptions for a team that is averaging 53 points per game. Under Dana’s offense Geno is breaking records, taking care of the ball, a front runner for the Heisman Trophy and winning games. In how impressive Geno’s numbers have been this season, winning games is the only thing Geno cares about. Us fans are a little more impractical. Of course we want our team to win above all else, but stats are what we crave, it’s what we drool over. It’s how we compare a high-flying team in Oregon versus a powerhouse down in Alabama who might not ever get to play each other this season. Not if Geno has anything to say about it. WVU might be a long shot to win the BCS National Championship and they might be a huge underdog. But under Dana Holgorsen one thing is for sure, Geno is a monster.

Call me crazy....but let's start a new tradition.

I came up with this idea a few weeks back, and wanted to save it, to see if we couldn't get it started against Baylor. This is our first BIG XII game, and I want our games from now on, in our house, that much harder for our opponents. Our crowd can be second to none, and Milan Puskar has the ability to be a very hard place for teams to win. But I have an idea to make it even harder for our opponents.

I love nothing more then when a crowd can get into a players head, to see the noise cause a QB scramble to be heard over the crowd, have their offense go offsides, or even get mad they can't get a play off in time. That kind of mind game is really effective on a QB, and can be a contributing factor to multiple mistakes. With that being said, I ask all Mountaineers going to the game to join in, and help start this tradition.

Some might call it a "Taunt," But I think it's just crowd participation getting into a player's head. It's not vulgar, and is nothing bad. It's a simple sing-songy chant that the crowd in unison chants directly at opposing QB's. Let's say Nick Florence get's sacked, after a big cheer from the crowd dies down initially, imagine 60,000 rabid Mountaineers chanting, "FLOR-ENCE!!! FLOR-ENCE!!!!" much to the tune of "Bull-shit" chants and "Score-Board". Imagine how hard that will be for a QB, where every sack, INT, or fumble the QB causes, 60,000+ start chanting his name.

To me this isn't mean spirited, it's family friendly, and it gets the crowd involved in a way that can really disrupt a QB's performance, because now he's over-thinking his reads, he's hesitating or hurrying so as to not get sacked, or throw an INT and hear it again. That kind of atmosphere could strike fear into all of our Big XII opponents. "COL-IN" "CA-SEY" "LAND-RY" and "DAY-NE" let them know we aren't going to make it easy for them, and not in the nasty ways we've heard about before.

Also, if you agree that this wold be great, please spread the word to other Mountaineers headed to the game and all the other home games. Let's get that crowd to make Mountaineer Field a place you're afraid to play at, because the crowd makes you make mistakes. Let's Goooooo!
I came up with this idea a few weeks back, and wanted to save it, to see if we couldn't get it started against Baylor.
WVU Plays Marshall Twice

After checking the statistics, it appears Baylor University is Marshall University's twin

.
Total Offense Nationally--------------- Baylor #6, Marshall #7

Total Defense Nationally-------------- Baylor #116, Marshall #121

Total Yards Passing Nationally-------Baylor #5, Marshall # 1

And the list goes on.

Marshall and Baylor's stats are so similar, that I find it spooky. Perhaps this game should have be played on Halloween when the moon is full.

The only question I have is: Can the Mountaineers beat Marshall twice in one season?
