After a long lightning delay and a suspension that lasted until Saturday afternoon, the WVU baseball team defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 4-2.
The Mountaineers (25-15, 10-6 Big 12) started out hot when the game began in the sixth inning (Oklahoma was leading 2-1). Brandon White grounded into a double play, but brought Kyle Davis home to tie the game. Kyle Gray brought Brandon Zarbnisky home on the next at-bat to give WVU a 3-2 lead.
Cole Austin brought Ivan Gonzales home in the eighth inning to give the Mountaineers the decisive 4-2 advantage.
The Sooners (28-16, 6-7 Big 12) began to mount a comeback in the top of the 9th, loading the bases. After a called strike in the inning, OU’s head coach Pete Hughes was thrown out of the game after arguing with the Big 12 umpire.
Sam Kessler picked up the win for West Virginia, allowing only two hits in his 2 2⁄3 innings on the mound. It is the first win of his college career. Zarbnisky grabbed the save.
Game 2 of the series will start about 4:15 PM.
