In front of a packed house in Charleston, the 21st-ranked WVU baseball team held Marshall scoreless in the final four innings to beat the Herd 8-4.
After Marshall (18-18, 7-8 C-USA) came to within one run after five innings, the Mountaineers (22-13, 8-4 Big 12) called Riley Troutt to relieve Isaiah Kearns and Kade Strowd and pitched five shutout innings (only allowing the runs that Kearns and Strowd put on base).
West Virginia’s best performer from the plate Ivan Gonzalez, hitting 4 in 5 at-bats which included a ground-rule RBI double in the fourth and a 2-run homer in the sixth.
The most impressive thing from the evening was probably the attendance at Appalachian Power Park. The official attendance stated 4,217, but it looked like a lot more than that:

Biggest crowd I've ever seen at Appalachian Power Park. It's intrastate rivals @WVUBaseball vs @HerdBaseball. #HailWV #HerdZone pic.twitter.com/fvz6TtCvFd

The Mountaineers continue their road trip this weekend, when they will head to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the K-State “BatCats”. Kansas State is currently last in the Big 12.
