According to this report from noted college football reporter Bruce Feldman, Tony Gibson will indeed become the Mountaineers fourth defensive coordinator under Dana Holgorsen in as many years. Many have speculated this move ever since Keith Patterson left Morgantown to reunite with Todd Graham out at Arizona State.
Gibby is well versed in the 3-4 scheme that Patterson had established, working with him previously up I-79 a bit at that other school institution. Feldman is reporting that Gibby will keep the same terminology in an effort to have as seamless a transition as possible.
Gibson returned the Mountaineers in 2013 after stints at Michigan, Pitt & Arizona following his first tenure in Morgantown. His recruiting ability has already been paying huge dividends in the Western Pennsylvania region. Now we get to see if he can call a defense as well as he's been bringing in the players. It won't be his first DC job, but it will be his first on the highest level. His other DC job was at West Virginia Tech in 1999-2000 before joining Rich Rodriguez's staff in Morgantown.
There is still no word on who will fill the final defensive coaching opening for the Mountaineers. Former safeties coach, Bruce Tall has been mentioned, though no reports are available of any official interviews as yet.
Stay tuned. We'll do our best to keep you posted.
