The lineman picked WVU over offers from Florida, Maryland, and Ohio State.
Marcell Lazard, a 6'5, 280 pound offensive tackle from Bloomfield, New Jersey, was the Mountaineers' first verbal commit of the class of 2013. Rated a three star prospect by Scout.com, Lazard had offers from a host of schools, including Florida, Maryland, Ohio State, Miami, and a number of ACC programs. Marcell is a huge specimen, fitting the mold of tall rangy linemen that offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh has preferred. As with most offensive linemen, Lazard will likely require a redshirt season to get physically and mentally acclimated to the collegiate landscape, providing much needed depth in 2014 and beyond. This is a big pickup for Bedenbaugh and Holgorsen, as Lazard's star rating belies his strong list of offers. He should anchor a strong line in the next few years, and importantly helps maintain WVU's pipeline to New Jersey even with Rutgers' move to the B1G.
Welcome home, Marcell Lazard!
