Not a ton of news since Friday's update, but enough to do one last update before National Signing Day. With last week's verbal of OL Grant Lingafelter, Holgo and staff had 5 spots left. One of those was filled in a big way over the weekend, meaning it's crunch time for the other 4.
- First, the big news - JUCO DL Dontrill Hyman gave his verbal pledge to the Mountaineers on Sunday. Hyman, as the only DL prospect currently in the 2013 class, will be a key newcomer, counted on to provide much-needed depth on a still-thin defensive line in need of playmakers. Reports have Hyman as receiving offers from ECU, Mississippi State and LSU, among others. Hyman has 3 years to play 2 but will obviously be in the mix immediately.
- The Mountaineers hosted two official visitors over the weekend: CB/WR Marquion Lane, and RB Daryl Chestnut. The Mountaineers have been the leader in the clubhouse for Lane for a while now, and all indications are that he will sign with the good guys on Wednesday. It is unsure at this point whether he would play CB or WR, but he's a good enough athlete to contribute at either position. Chestnut is actually a Western Michigan verbal, but supposedly had a very good visit as well. It would not be a shock to see him flip to the Mountaineers, filling the slot vacated by Zaire Williams.
- As expected, RB JoJo Kemp chose Kentucky over WVU, Pitt and USF on Friday. No surprise there, and with Chestnut and RB Mario Alford still in play for WVU, things still look rosy at the running back position.
- No word as of yet on how WR Tyler Boyd liked his visit to Tennessee. WVU is probably third in the running for him right now, but we're not out of it completely. JUCO QB Tanner McEvoy is evidently still pondering the Mountaineers too. There hasn't been much news on him since it was announced that he would visit Florida and Wisconsin, but maybe no news is good news for now?
Again, 4 spots left. Here's the updated big board:
1. ATH Marquion Lane
2. RB Daryl Chestnut
3. RB Mario Alford
4. OL Poet Thomas
5. LB Brandon Golson
6. DB Jeremy Tyler
7. DB Mackenro Alexander
8. WR Tyler Boyd
9. QB Tanner McEvoy
10. DL De'Asian Richardson
11. DL Stacy Thomas
My thought is that we get Lane for sure, either Chestnut or Alford, either Tyler or Alexander, and one more---hopefully Thomas, but Boyd or McEvoy would be the icing on the cake. At any rate, assuming we finish up with 4 of these players, it will be a VERY solid ending to a deep, if not flashy, class. Keep us updated with anything you hear in the comments.
