I just wanted to take a closer look at the defensive performance by the Old Gold & Blue from Saturday. Unlike many, I was not very concerned by the misleading final defensive numbers. Below is a breakdown for the first 3 quarters, after which the game was clearly out of hand. As I suspected, Our D played better than the final numbers show. Bottom line, we have a young D in a new scheme, and it will take some time for everyone to grow and develop with the system. That being said, the numbers show that they did a pretty good job their first time out.

And, I expect to see some marked improvements the next time out as we now have plenty of true game film for our coaches to utilize as teaching tools. I think our D will be just fine!

End of 3rd Quarter

Score: 55 – 20 WVU

Marshall’s next scoring drive didn’t come until under 10 minutes remaining in the forth quarter and the score was 69 – 20 WVU.

Through 3 quarters, WVU gave up 334 yards 1 true TD (the 2nd TD came after a blocked punt recovered inside WVU’s 10), and 2 field goals.

The WVU D also forced 2 turnovers against Marshall's 1st string Offense.

Lastly, Mid-way through the 3rd, WVU as already getting the 2 and 3 deeps reps…

The overall numbers are definitely misleading. The D will be just fine.
