Cinci and lllvlll

should help

I doubt Cincy gets in.

Maybe if BYU says no, but I just don’t think they’re that attractive a commodity. Even then, though, the island just gets bigger but still doesn’t connect to the mainland.

I don't think BYU and WVU in the same conference for all sports is practical

And it’s not that Cinci’s an attractive commodity so much as that the other options for #12 are worse (i.e. current non-AQ/2013 Big East schools), logistically terrible (the rest of the 2010 Big East) or pipe dreams (schools in other AQ conferences).

I agree about BYU

Now that you are a Big 12 brother, let’s hear your take on who the next two teams we take should be? Louisville seems to be our conference admins preference, but I like FSU and I know nothing about Clemson – other than ya’ll beat the living shit out of them!

I'm (future) ACC

Syracuse fan, keeping track of one of oldest rivals here. I think you guys should take the ’Ville and Cinci.

You’re not getting FSU or Clemson (or any ACC school; you can’t offer much more money than ACC, and you’re much more unstable and geographically out of region, sorry). I’m fairly convinced you & Oklahoma aren’t going anywhere so the SWC Big 12 is far more stable than many think, but a lot of people are not and the VA/NC core of the ACC isn’t going anywhere for any reason which means the northern and southern extremes can rely on that. You’re certainly not getting anyone from the SEC, Big Ten, or Pac 12.

Houston and Rutgers are probably the only other schools even worth considering, but Houston adds no markets and Rutgers gets you less of New Jersey than they’d like to claim (and none of NYC but the Jersey suburbs). USF would try and make a case that if the SEC moved into Texas, the Big 12 should move into Florida, but the non-FSU/Miami/Florida programs in the state are pretty marginal as far as attracting fans even when they’re decent on the field. Cinci at least has some basketball tradition and some recent success in football (BCS bowl losses notwithstanding).

by drothgery on Feb 10, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure I agree with you

The fact that we took WVU and are considering BYU is an indication that geography is not necessarily an issue. The perceived instability of the Big XII is a result of two Big 8 schools still butt hurt over playing a lesser role in the Big 12 and one neurotic mal-content with an inferiority complex. The two big dogs (UT & OU) of the confrerence obviously set the tone for direction and the organization of all. UT’s LHN caused much hand wringing and teeth gnashing because of fear of even more school dominance. Once the self rightous facade and red herrings were discovered (Misery and aggy) and the realization that the LHN only addressed third tier rights, the sniveling died down.

With the addition of TCU and WVU, the conference has actually even become more stable than it was when Misery and aggy were members. The Big XII TV rights will be up for negotiation in a couple of years and should set record $ figures.

No, this conference has gone from a rather bleak future to the darling of college football – only rivaled by the SEC and certainly exceeding the PAC 12.

My personal feelings, way back when, was to have WVU and Pitt join – that made better sense to me. One of my connections has told me this is still not off theinternal table as yet.

And, don’t kid yourself about FSU – it’s all about money and recruiting and FSU can smell both in the Big XII.

No ACC teams

would ever go to the Big 12. There is absolutely no way, and you are right, it doesn’t have too much to do about geography. The reason being is that the Big 12 is seen as being more un-stable than the ACC. Everyone in the country knows that the 2 Oklahoma schools (if it included the 2 Texas schools) would love to go out to the Pac 12 (it almost happened twice in the past two years actually), and the other schools in the Big 12 could easily be left in the dark without the linchpin schools of the league. Again, this nearly happened twice in the past 2 years in the expansion jumbo if you recall. In general, teams will never leave one conference for another conference which is seen as less stable, but will always go to another conference which is seen as more stable. The key to all of this expansion mess is actually conference stability – even more than money to an extent. Now, the SEC or Big 10 could easily invade the ACC if they wanted, but never the Big 12.

Here is your order of stability right now: SEC, B1G, Pac-12, ACC, Big 12, Big East, rest of conferees. It is important to note that the first 3 conferences (SEC, B1G, Pac-12) are – for the most part – tied. None of the other conferences are really safe.

Accordingly, everyone knows that any ACC school would love to bolt to the SEC if they had the chance which I do see as inevitable one day but not for a long time.

I also think it’s inevitable that the 4 Oklahaoma and Texas schools will inevitably head out to the Pac 12 one day, but again, it won’t be for a long, long time. Not for at-least 10 years so everyone will be safe for a long time. The only major move I see in the next 5 years is the Big 12 taking Ville and one other school (probably Cincy), and I also see this move as inevitable.

If (and really when) the Big 12 and ACC get invaded in the long distant future, we will have a whole another “Expansion Fall” (aka. ‘Arab Spring’) However, it won’t be as bad next time, because in 10 years, I see a 8 team college football playoff which will ease all of this expansion mess. You have all read the many Dan Wetzel articles on Yahoo in the recent years (who hasn’t?)

Kuddos for WVU on getting out of the B1G.

by PittGuy on Feb 11, 2012 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

You have been reading too much of media conjecture without knowing the facts.

It is bogus that UT wanted to move to the PAC – so verified by Deloss Dodds himself. It’s true that the PAC commish wanted UT and OU badly and made serious overtures, but not true that UT was all in on it. Dodd’s statement was that the geography would have been too much for the non-revenue teams. It’s also true that the ACC made overtures to UT as well and the media ran with this as likely when it wasn’t.

It made sense for the remaining AD’s to, at least, consider their options when Nebraska, Misery (who started the whole realignment mess) and aggy bolted or wanted to bolt. If the same had happened to the ACC, they would have explored their options as well. In fact, one of the reasons for the ACC inviting Pitt and Syracuse was to insure their own stability and keep the Big 12 from picking them off! The ACC wasn’t then nor is now, invulnerable to realignment.
I don’t agree that the ACC is all that stable anyway – why would Syracuse and FSU even be exploring their options if this was true?

The answer is very simple – it’s called $$$$$. There is not a school in this country that hasn;t sold out to a network’s schedule demands and the same demands can just as easily dictate realignment preferences as well.

The actual gorilla in the room is not whether UT and OU go to the PAC (which they never will), but whether they become part of a super conference that would include them and teams like BYU, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Ohio State, etc. This is more like to occur than anything else and maybe not too far in the future.

by Snide Aside on Feb 11, 2012 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

The ACC is more stable than a lot of people think

The NC/VA schools are not going anywhere; this is their conference. They built it (or in VT’s case, they always wanted to be in it).

The more southern schools would not go anywhere but to the SEC, and their markets overlap with SEC schools already, so they aren’t going anywhere.

And the more northern schools (including both of us) would not go anywhere but to the B1G, and either overlap markets (you guys) or just don’t bring big markets for football (us, Maryland, BC) so we aren’t going anywhere.

by drothgery on Feb 13, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

It always amazes me when others think conference loyalty is a factor

Nebraska was a charter member of the Big 8 – nee Big 12 – and they bolted. A&M was a charter member of the SWC – nee Big 12 – and they bolted. Georgia Tech was a charter member of the SEC – guess what they did?

Don’t fall into the loyalty or perceived “preference” trap – you will wind up iwth a broken heart. MONEY will be the only loyalty that exists from now on – book it!

Heed what I say about the “super conference” of the future.
I think in this respect, the ACC will more likely survive. As of today, there is only two ACC teams that I think might even be a candidate for the SC – Miami and FSU. And I am not really all that sure about Miami.

Here are, in my opinion, the Super Conference candidates – by conference:

ACC
Miami
FSU

SEC
Alabama
LSU
Auburn

BIG 12
Texas
OU

BIG 10
Ohio State
Nebraska
Michigan

PAC 10
USC
UCLA

All other conferences
0

AT LARGE
Notre Dame
BYU

I don’t get all of the love for BYU…what do they bring to the table (other than the possible support of their church)?

Personally, I am with you as far as BYU

BYU doesn’t show me much, but it just seems they are always brought up as an offer (see Big 12, Big
East, PAC and even Big 10)
It goes back to independencem availability and TV rights – the only driving force behind the “super conference” theory anyway.

No

This SuperConference, as presented above, is a crackpot theory.

by ginfizzbear on Feb 13, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

It is only "crackpot" if you don't believe there will be a super conference

And, if you are of that ilk, you haven;t been paying attention or you are a supreme skeptic, in spite of the evidence!
If YOU have a different theory on realigment, I am anxious to hear it.

Simply by losing programs like Mizzou and A&M, the quality of Big XII football improved.

Now that TCU and WV have entered the conference, the quality of Big XII football has improved exponentially. Based on how strong the Big XII was last year, it won’t be long before we are the #1 conference in the country and everyone will realize once again the SEC is not only the moral cesspool of college football, they don’t even play the game the right way either.

by bevosteve67 on Feb 10, 2012 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Au contraire - the Big XII is ALREADY the best conference

Check the records for the last 5 years. The networks and the interbreeders themsleves are the only ones blatting about the SEC, SEC,SEC.
With the addition of WVU and TCU – two FOOTBALL oriented programs, the Big XII got even better.

Suck it, SEC, SEC, SEC!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Big XII, Mountaineers!

I am also impressed with the ability of your administrators to ‘finish’. Well done. They have certainly navigated realignment quite well. If it takes more money to keep them, it would be money well-spent. Their abilities are no longer a secret, and it shouldn’t take long for the less fortunate among DI schools to find their phone number.

I consider us extremely fortunate to have DeLoss Dodds during this time of change in college athletics. He and our president have kept us well-positioned for the future.

May our partnership be long and prosperous.
