For the second straight week, Geno Smith will lead the West Virginia Mountaineers into the state of Texas, this time to face-off against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Marquee Match-up for week seven, as chosen by fans on Facebook.
Throughout the season, the Davey O'Brien will highlight the fan-selected, best weekly quarterback match-up as the race for the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award continues. Quarterbacks from all 124 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Oct. 22.
Marquee Match-up: No. 5 West Virginia at Texas Tech
Saturday, October 13 at 3:30 p.m. (ET) on ABC/ESPN
The Texas Tech Red Raiders, who rank first in pass defense (117.40 yards per game) and second in total defense (210.00 yards per game), will be in for a tough test this week when Geno Smith, the most efficient quarterback in the NCAA (202.38 rating), and the West Virginia Mountaineers ride into town. Smith, who has yet to throw an interception this season, has passed for 24 touchdowns and leads the nation with 30 points per game.
Red Raider quarterback Seth Doege is tied for fifth in the NCAA with 18 points per game, while the notoriously potent Texas Tech offense ranks seventh in the nation in passing offense (341.2 yards per game). Consequently, this game is expected to be exponentially higher scoring than the last meet-up between the two teams, when West Virginia beat Tech 7-6 in 1938.
