Kickers are used, misused, and often abused. They are often eccentric and rarely respected. But no team can make a run at the National Championship without a skillful one. Despite their limited amount of playing time, they are almost always the leading scorer on every football team.
Yes. Kickers score points! More than any other player on the team, and when they step on the field we expect them to. Failure to do so has lost many a football game.
In any other sport the leading scorer would be considered a superstar, but not in football. As a head coach recruiting a great kicker would be my top priority. After all, he is destined to be my top scorer and football games are won by points.
In recent years at West Virginia, recruiting a great kicker seems to be an afterthought. Rarely have the recruiting sites even listed a kicker that we were recruiting, let alone a great kicker. The top prospect in the state gives a verbal to Iowa. Did WV even give him an offer?
What gives? I am dumbfounded! Anyone want to explain this to me!
