Six months ago I posted in support of Oliver Luck's coach-in -waiting plan and predicted its success. It deeply saddens me that I was wrong. I still think Luck made the right decision and based on the facts, at that point in time, it should have been a success. WV had a coach purported to be ethical, professional, and loyal to a fault. All it took to be successful was a little ethics and professionalism on the part of the participants. Sadly this was lacking.
A head coach is a member of a football family starting with the university president and going down to the graduate assistant. Success or failure of the program is based on the precept that the goals of the individual are subservient to the overall goals of the program. Perhaps it is the success, the position, the money, or the constant criticism of the fans, I don't know why, but many head coaches forget this. Don't blame Luck for the flaws of the individual.
So go in peace Bill Stewart. I will never forget the memories of the Oklahoma game. I considered you a friend twenty years ago and I still do.
But remember, you violated the mantra that is drilled into every player who has ever taken the field:
There is no I in TEAM!
