The Shotgun/Throwdown: Tuesday (5/31/11) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Rio Grande Outlaw Lager, in honor of Jim Tressel and the Ohio State University Buckeyes.
Lots of former WVU players are featured in today's articles (such is the summer doldrums of college sports news). Some are giving back to the WV community and some are just looking for a chance to play some more. I have a couple articles on the recent Holgorsen events, but not too much. In my mind, it's been covered and beaten to death. Move along. Other news has some more previews to the coming football season and the basketball team's upcoming overseas trip. League news abounds and there's that little matter of schadenfreude for our neighbors to the west...

TV contact
too much to post as a comment… so I’ve written a fanpost on how a new partnership can help us more than just financially – http://www.smokingmusket.com/2011/5/31/2199229/a-few-tv-contract-thoughts
Nune's TV contract stuff
I don’t want to delve into the numbers much, I think where we’re at, we’re prolly looking $18.5 per school. Not alot more than ESPN is offering, but its FAR greater exposure, and here’s why….
Firstly, square away that Comcast/NBC owns Versus. Versus had a Pac10 deal in place, but with the new conference media deal, are left without major player in college football to do business with.
If packaging the networks together (as would almost certainly be the case), this can get ALL of our football games on national tv, every week. This becomes a BIG bonus.
Noon game on VS, 3:30 games on NBC and VS, and 7:00 game on VS. Shuffle it around a bit when Notre Dame are playing at home, but it still works out great for us. VS had a few Pac10 games on Thursday nights before, so that’s not a hard switch to make. There’s enough room for us to all get on the same page.
We have content they need, we need a home and a fair partner. NBC/Versus also in my opinion do a GREAT job of not spreading themselves too thin. They aren’t “everything to everyone”, like ESPN, which leaves us during the fall getting lost in the shuffle of the NFL, everyone else playing football, baseball, Nascar, NBA starting, drag racing, ect… They have a few core focuses, the NHL, some college football, Indycar, WEC, and PBR… yeah its a bit jumbled, but fair more QUALITY coverage.
sorry... mutliple tabs, got F'd up
the fanpost is in far greater detail
my concern with VS
is the lack of exposure to the casual fan. WVU fans will find the games no doubt, but I for one have never watched VS casually flipping through
I agree.
If I’m looking for CFB coverage, I usually tune to ESPN. Fully understanding their inherent biases and limitations, I still think ESPN has the best CFB coverage available. If ESPN has no interest in broadcasting BE games, what’s to stop them from bashing the conference more than they already do? To me, the money needs to be significantly higher and the other network(s) need to show a serious intent to expand and improve across-the-board coverage if we’re going to go away from ESPN. But that’s just me.

its more than the money guys...
We complain about friday games, or games on espn3.com, or all that shit… at some point, its time to follow the NHL and Indycar, move out of the crowded apartment complex and go live in a suburb for the same price and keep our family happy. Everyone in the conference already bitches enough about our September games not being aired so everyone in the entire conference can watch them, why keep going back to the same bad situation???
Yeah, we might not get “casual” viewers flipping channels, OR, we may just get new viewers who have never given our team’s a second look, see a promo during a hockey game… or be waiting on WEC fights to start and catch the end of a game… and suddenly their exposed to us. Its 6 in one half, 6 in the other. And with the way the regional coverage, especially on saturdays, compares to national coverage, thats a big difference….
Here's my take on why there is a difference.
For the NHL and Indycar, championships are won on the playing surface. In CFB, championships are won in the eyes of the voters and in the minds of the recruits. So CFB is about more than just viewers. If I’m looking at this purely from an economic perspective, sure, I’m on board with you. But when you need to appeal to voters (AP/Harris/Coaches poll) and recruits, you need to be part of of the national discussion. Unfortunately, much of that national discussion takes place on ESPN/ABC.

So....
regional games on local ABC affiliates are better than national tv coverage on a network with a larger footprint?
Take this example… which is commonly the case I deal with.
I live in Myrtle Beach, and have Time Warner as a cable provider. I love TWC, but they don’t offer ESPN3 because they won’t shell the $$$ out for it. TWC is the primary provider in the South.
Say WVU plays Louisville in a 3:30 game.
My options on television are:
NBC – Notre Dame home games, or golf
ABC – a Big 10 game or ACC game
CBS – the SEC game
ESPN (HD) – the alternate ABC game (or in some instances, I get an ESPN News feed (no joke, its f’n retarded!)
ESPN (SD) – the alternate ABC game, a different ACC game, or a PAC10/Big12 game
ESPN2 – Big 10 or SEC games, or occasionally NASCAR
So, to watch that 3:30 WVU game, I’m relegated to watching a hijacked stream online, or buying a PPV package. Its ridiculous.
Firstly, NBC have slots to fill, especially when ND is on the road.
Secondly, Versus is a national network. Is it as well known as ESPN, no, of course not. But its on 65% of most basic cable packages. Its part of basic cable here in the south, its part of it back home in WV (at least in Charleston.)
Again, ***ALL*** Big East conference games can be on NATIONAL television. No simulcasts! No split coverage. That recruit, sitting in Atlanta, or Charlotte, or Tallahassee, can see OUR teams play, not just the teams from the region they live in. “Hey, I got a call from WVU, maybe I should check a few of their games and their opponents out…”
Yes, I understand that discussion drives the bus, but think about TCU. How many of their games were on ESPN last year? And didn’t they get talked about a bunch? Didn’t they play in the Rose Bowl? Finish the season #3??? The day and age of “you gotta be here” is gone. Writers and voters have enough avenues that they don’t necessarily HAVE to rely on ESPN for telling them whose good. They just have to do their jobs. And they’ve shown they can and are willing to do that.
Also, by the end of this summer, Versus is going to completely re-branded as NBC Sports. That’s already a process that on the legal side has begun. There’s going to be a TON of steam and marketing and cross-promotion behind this, because NBC are protecting their Olympic investment. This isn’t like we’re going to a cable network that noone has, or has heard of.
Not to mention
being “part of the discussion” didn’t exactly help Cincinatti two years ago when they were undefeated. They were on ESPN a few times, just like we are now. How’d that work out? It ended with their coach being sick of the politics and going somewhere where he had a chance. Where his games are ALWAYS on tv. Where he can control a big part of a different message than the one coming from the Mark May’s and Jesse Palmer’s of the world.
You don’t think that he’s in a better situation now? He has a network that trumpets his team. Writers and voters working for the Comcast empire that buy into it. Wait til he has them winning 10 games a year. We can have that same kind of relationship.
Think how CBS go to bat for EVERYTHING the SEC does. Look at cbssports.com sometime in October, and its a pandering of writers saying “which SEC team will play for the national title?”.
We can get that same press and a solid, committed, PARTNER to do the same for us….
You make some really good points, and ones that I hadn't really thought of.
Hard to do as it may be, I think you’ve changed my mind lol.
I guess I’m just a brand loyalist at heart and not usually open to new and different ideas that may actually be better in the long run. Based on some of the things you’ve laid out, I can see where this could be a boon for the Big East. Let’s hope it plays out that way.
