lack of effort?
I'm getting tired of hearing after each Mountaineer loss from Coach Holgorsen that the players didn't put out enough effort; didn't play with enough energy; weren't fired up enough. That's the coaches job to do that! Help them get motivated. Maybe they don't have enough energy left for the games after they are tied up with coaches & film study from 2-6 or 7 p.m. Tues through Thurs, then games Saturday, then practice again Sunday! That doesn't include lifting which is scheduled separately. Then there's class attendance & homework. I don't think it's the players giving a lack of effort.

For the record the players can only be involved 20 hours a week. That includes practice, film study, weight lifting and even study hall.

Much of the activity is voluntary.
Or maybe I should say “voluntary.” I’m sure guys spend more time than the allotted 20 hours doing football-related (but not coach-supervised) activity, such as getting treatment, doing extra lifting, watching extra film, etc.
But honestly, 20 hours isn’t that bad when you think about it. I’m not sure whether games count, but assuming they don’t, 20 hours would be 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. You have one day off, and that’s plenty of opportunity to work, especially if you know they will be lifting and watching film on their own.

yes, the “voluntary” extra time is the key.
