TSM Coaching Approval Meter (Post-Louisville, 2011)
Another loss to a Big East foe forebodes not stellar results in today's poll. There was a slight rebound in the approval last week, but not enough to push the overall average higher. Based on past history, there will be a drop, but how far will the approval dip this week?
Last Poll:
90% approval with 521 votes cast
2011 Statistics:
94% approval
5092 positive votes
324 negative votes
5416 votes cast
Here's how this poll works:
Do you approve of the job that the coaching staff is doing? Yes or No. No hedging, nothing in between. It's up to you use your own criteria. Are you judging the staff by the weekly team performance? Are you looking at the program as a whole? Do you take into consideration recruiting? Are you looking at national attention (good or bad)? As always, please explain your vote in the comments section. We are especially interested in hearing the reasoning behind the negative votes being cast, considering the small numbers of them and the success of the team.

Still voting season as a whole....
To me it’s plain and simple; the kicking team cost WVU the win. The offense nearly doubled what Louisville has been allowing all year in points. The defense got just enough stops that we’d have won if it hadn’t been for the 13 points the kicking team gave up.
That unit was Bill Stewart’s responsibility for a long time and we still suck at it. I can’t fault Holgorsen or any of his staff for making it right when they only got their jobs in June.

BTW, that was a YES.

Kicking game.
Blocked kick returned for TD? That hasn’t happened since 2004. That’s not on Stew or his special teams coaching abilities. We have had far worse special teams this year than we ever did under Stew. A punt return TD and 2 KO return TDs. Poor return units. Missed extra points. You can’t put that on Stew. You just can’t. Yes, coaches came in in June but it really can’t be that hard to teach new ST schemes. It’s not like we’re going from an I-formation to a spread. You’re blocking for FGs and tackling (attempting to tackle?) on kickoffs. How different can it be? That stuff is about effort and fundamentals, and we’re not getting it done there.

Agreed.
I wonder how much emphasis is put on ST under HCDH… Doesn’t appear to be much given that the ST-play has been terrible all year. There could be an argument that the LSU and L’ville losses were direct results of very poor ST play.
by SilverSpring'Eer on Nov 7, 2011 1:38 PM EST up reply actions
CR, that argument might hold if everyone on ST were a freshman....
But Stewart and McMichael had more time with that unit than the new regime does. How is it they are so lacking in the fundamentals of blocking and tackling? And why is it that the new coaches, who have only had the kids from Fall Camp through 8 games, are supposed to fix a lack of fundamental skills in players who have been there 2, 3 or 4 years?

If their fundamentals were so bad the last 2,3, or 4 years, why are the results suddenly worse this year when they presumably have had 6 months to at least work on it and hopefully improve maginally?

Well, the coaches can't coach the kids in the summer...
So, the new crew has only had 3-1/2 months (since fall camp in August) to work with them. Why they seem to have regressed is a bit of a mystery, but the ST weren’t all that good to begin with. We’ve been bitching about sloppy coverage, missed kicks and shanked punts on here for years.
Let’s just agree that it’s something that needs addressed and fixed, whatever that fix is. It may be a new ST coach or more emphasis on that phase of the game or just recruiting better players.

I can agree with that last part.

Still Yes...
I still believe this program is heading in the right direction from a long-term standpoint.
Certainly, Casteel needs to re-evaluate running the 3-3-5 with our current roster. In the last 3 games we have given up 49, 31, and 38 to teams with sub-par offensive season numbers.
STs continues to be a thorn in our side, and Bitancurt’s strong start has gone south for the winter.
On a positive, the run game and blocking seems to be improving.

Overall a yes but....
I have to agree with Cole as far as Casteel goes. He has been here and doesn’t get the bye that I would reserve for the new coaches. Without a Chris Neild type of nose tackle, the 3-3-5 won’t work (and Pat Miller doesn’t help our cause). The kicking game is atrocious in all aspects and has to be addressed somehow.

I support Holgersen ...
but voted no this week. Special teams has become a huge issue, and I am starting to think that the coaching staff does not pay sufficient attention to special teams. This is Holgersen’s first head coaching gig. Special teams used to be the responsibility of someone else, now he is ultimately responsible. I don’t think he has figured out how to handle this yet, but think he will.
As for the D, sadly, they are just not very good. They lost a lot of talented players from last year, and replacements were not ready. I don’t think they should abandon the 3-3-5. You have to dance with who brung ya, and we are going to have to grit our teeth and watch this defense struggle. I think Casteel is the right long run solution, and his success over the long term has earned him a pass this year in my book.
No sig.

Kinda get the feeling...
….that the 3-3-5 isn’t making it to the Big12 with the rest of the staff, roster and equipment.
IDK, man. The 3-3-5 seemed to work pretty damn good the last time we played a Big XII team....
I remember reading how the Oklahoma O-line was just going to swat our speedy-but-undersized D-players all over the field. I also remember Sam Bradford laying on his back a lot.
"Oh, to sail away, To sandy lands and other days"
Achilles' Last Stand, Led Zeppelin
Yeah it did, but
that was not with our current HC, who I have a feeling is going to go into the B12 with a clean slate of what he wants to run. We will be recruiting an area that can actually get us 4 down linemen.
Also, if we played every game with that kind of heart, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
the 3-3-5 is perfect for the Big XII
where just about everyone runs a spread offense

Yes and
pretty frustrated right now with the effort/heart of the team. We’ll see how it plays out.

I voted no
For the first time this season for the following reasons:
1.) Special Teams
2.) Defense
3.) Lack of Heart
4.) Haven’t played a complete game ALL season.
5.) No running game to speak of.
6.) Gino seems to be more concerned about his own personal statistics.
7.) NO IMPROVEMENT week to week.
We are going in the wrong direction and with 3 games left I worry we may have won our last game against UConn.
The only positive. still better than Billy Bob Stewart.
This is what bothers me the most. From 2002-2007, you could see the program building taking place. We had some bad losses, but overall, the program was getting better. From 2008-2011, it has been getting worse.
Rodriguez brought in all new coaches (save Stewart) on both sides of the ball. He switched from an I-formation to spread offense. He completely overhauled the football program. He was hired to overhaul the program.
Stewart and Hoglorsen both just tweaked the offense. Neither touched special teams or defense. It’s completely different.
One thing I wish Casteel would do that he doesn't...
…is take the best athlete on the roster, Bruce Irvin, and put him in space. Zone blitz, tweener, rover, monster, hybrid, whatever you want to call it. He doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary with him. He;s a special player that only comes along once in a while. Don’t try to make him Scooter when he’s clearly not.
First "NO" vote of the season, but
as a whole, the program is a YES. TEAM play is representative of coaching, and the TEAM seems to have regressed or stayed the same (not improved) in certain areas.
1. I agree with everyone on here sayin casteel needs to drop the 3-3-5. I’d go 3-4 to get a bigger body at DE and move Bruce to linebacker to see if we can pressure opposing QBs that way. He could use his speed better if he wasn’t met by an o-lineman as soon as the ball is snapped. I think we all agree that lack of a good pass rush is not helping the DBs. And that’s definitely not an out for our terrible DB play. Just a point i think has some validity. Also, having a body bigger than Bruce on the line and 4 linebackers on the field may help stop the run better than we have been.
2. I don’t like the fact that we don’t have a special teams coach. I see HCDH’s theory of not hiring one, but with as atrocious as they’ve been a designated ST coach is needed.
3. Is it just me, or was some of the playcalling a little lackluster toward the end of the game on Saturday? I know playcalling will change throughout the course of the game (depending on how well the opposing defense has adjusted), but i think HCDH coulda put a little more air in the ball. UL seemed to be playing in there base defense (no prevent or whatever of any kind), so I woulda liked to see the offense be more aggressive.
To number 3
Geno threw down field a lot in that game IMHO, often when he didn’t need to or when there were other more open receivers closer.
Also I think Geno changes the play TOO much, I understand that he needs the ability to do that but I think he’s over thinking and trying to do to much.

2 things (and not directed at anyone in particular)
1. Daron Roberts was hired as a Special Teams (granted mostly with the return teams) guy due to his experience with NFL Special Teams and then was given added responsibilities with the receivers.
2. If we can’t recruit enough lineman for a three man front, how are we supposed to magically have enough for a 4 man look?
assuming that's at me
1. i’ve heard holgs in press conferences say that no on in particular focuses on ST, but i guess i interpreted that incorrectly…sorry
2. its obvious the 3-3-5 isn’t gettin it done with the players we have…so take a DB off the field (pat miller?), use bruce as a linebacker, and put a bigger DE on the line in place of bruce…seems to me letting bruce rush the qb from the linebacker position would give him a better opportunity to actually get pressure and the bigger DE may help stop the run better…at this point in the season this seems like an adjustment worth at least trying does it not? if a scheme like this works then we can start recruiting for it…if not, then fine, but at least you would have tried to make an adjustment
not at all
several have pointed out similar points and even if we go to a 3-4, we are painfully short of depth at LB as well…just pointing these things out
No
1. We lost to another team that we were favored to beat by two touchdowns.
2. We gave up 30+ to a BAD offense.
3. Geno seems to be getting worse each week. If our receivers we’re “less than spectacular”, we’d never score.
4. When going for it on 4th and 10 from your own 40 is less risky than punting, you have issues.
5. I’ve always been a Casteel fan because his defenses always improved from week to week. Not anymore…
6. Team lacks motivation/heart/something…
No
and I definitely don’t approve of the defensive coordinator at WVU. I never have.
We are facing historically bad offenses in the Big East in the last 7-9 years.
I do think it hurts that Bill Stewart did such an atrocious job of recruiting on that side of the ball.
I think this coach will turn it around next year but I DO believe we’ll finish 7-5.

inside the 20, can’t blame the coach for that.

First "NO" vote of the season
I like HCDH and I am hoping he figures out the jump from OC to HC. I’m still happy with what Oliver did and I’d rather have Dana than BillyBob any day. That being said, the fact is that this team’s effort and results have been piss poor. Perhaps it is a by product of Stewart always taking up for them and handling with kid gloves. Perhaps it is a product of a hastily thrown together coaching arrangement. Whatever “it” is…the head coach needs to figure a way to rectify and right this thing.
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
I really wish we could hold off until HCDH gets his guys in the program
because we are starting to see how bad at recruiting HCBS was and how far it fell when Doc left.

It might take a while to see the effects of Doc leaving, we still have "ins" in FL
BS’s biggest problem he left us with was one of depth, taking small classes
We now have a huge "in" in TX
and our “ins” in FL. We could have some great recruiting classes

No again
I have to vote NO again. I am frustrated more this year than last year with what I am seeing.
This team lacks heart. – falls squarely on the players
This team lacks motivation. – falls squarely on the coaching staff from HCDH down.
The Defense has been mediocre – Well as fans, we knew this D was going to be young this year, so we couldn’t expect too much, but you don’t see this side of the ball getting better week to week.
The Offense just isn’t consistent – players and coaches have to share in the blame. Wrong matchups, heart/motivation, play calling, play execution. The sad thing, this offense isn’t that huge of a leap from what they had. Some said it was designed to be easier for them to run.
I could go on, but we all are complaining about similar things. I don’t blame Bill Stewart for anything that happens in 2011. Once he was let go, it’s no longer his team. It becomes Holgerson’s team and his responsibilities. Blaming Stewart is a cop out, like kicking the dog when they lose.
2011 Mountaineers – The team with no heart and the least amount of motivation from a coach.
