UConn's Andre Drummond is the consensus pick for Big East newcomer of the year. But we don't like your consensuses. Consensi? Consen....eh, we just like to be different. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)
We conclude our review of Rumble in the Garden's Big East Blogger Roundtable series with another look at a question that didn't make it into one of Pico Dulce's posts: All-Rookie team. I figured that this is the area that would draw the most disparity among contributors and, from the looks of the comprehensive spreadsheet, I was right. There are just so many new players that we don't know that much about, including how they will adjust to college and the rigors of the Big East, to what kind of opportunities they will get, etc., that it's almost impossible to predict too much. Nonetheless, here we are.
Here's my squad:
1. Jabarie Hinds (WVU)
2. Andre Drummond (UConn)
3. Wayne Blackshear (Louisville)
4. Khem Birch (Pitt)
5. Pick one from St. John's ridiculous freshman class.
I tried to do some research and actually be objective here. To be honest, I have no clue. After watching a couple games for WVU, I'm not sure Hinds is the best choice. But I could be wrong, there's still plenty of time for him to live up to his hype. Here's what I based my picks on:
This was pretty hard for me, as I don't follow basketball recruiting nearly as closely as I follow football recruiting. Drummond and Blackshear are too talented not to make an impact. Hinds will have all kinds of opportunity and will simply have to play well if WVU is going to compete...I think he gets the job done. Birch will step right in and fill the defensive stopper role at Pitt...they just seem to keep rolling those guys out year after year. And at St. Johns it's just a matter of who adjusts quickest, so I can't pick just one.
Who would you have picked? Is there another WVU player I should have gone with over Hinds? Do you have any idea which St. John's player or players are most likely to emerge? Comment away.
