As expected, WVU received it's first LOI for the basketball early signing period and football continues to prep for a dangerous Cincinnati team. Sorry for the lack of commentary, but your daily links await...

HERTZEL COLUMN: Defense under fire for opponents’ piles of points - Times West Virginian
It’s mentioned quite strongly on the talk shows and in the social media, and when you consider that Syracuse put 49 points on the board three weeks back and that Louisville stuck 38 up last week, neither known as an offensive juggernaut, it is fair criticism.
WVU defense slip hard to explain - Charleston Gazette
How then, to explain this: A season after finishing third in the country in total defense and losing seven starters to graduation, West Virginia has slipped only to No. 23 in total defense this season. That's still better than 97 other FBS schools across the country.

Mountaineers Lack Excitement, Support on Game Day - WVillustrated
One of the biggest messages in team meetings and on the practice field this week has been for the offense to outwardly show excitement toward the defense and for the defense to do the same toward the offense.
WVU coach looks for more energy from team - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"Very few teams can line up and have just that much more talent and, regardless of what kind of effort they play with, can win the game," Holgorsen said. "We're obviously not one of them. In order to win, we have to play with effort all the time."

Nice article by Hickman about the defense.
It doesn’t completely excuse their performance, but it certainly helps explain how things could be SO bad.

Welcome to the Big 12!
Meant to come over here sooner, but I am easily distracted.
Anyway, I am working on a fan edit of the Big 12 commercial to remove the leaving institutions (Missouri, aTm) and replace them with clips from you guys and TCU.
One cool clip I found was of WVU players slamming a sledgehammer into the ground. I tried to do some internet research to see if this was a tradition you guys normally do, or if it was a one time thing, but I couldn’t find anything about it.
Anyway, is this something that is a great representation of your school? Or should I just stick to clips of Pat White scorching Oklahoma’s defense in the Fiesta Bowl?
(by the way, if this is a tradition of yours, I think it is very cool and am a bit envious)
Would you like some Freys with that?

I think this year’s D must have brought the sledgehammer down on their own foot.

// defense too lazy to carry sledge..leaves it on bus prior to mantrip
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
Thanks!
Do you guys like the tradition? I know sometimes when an administration starts a new “tradition” it falls flat on it’s face, so I am curious if you guys like it or not.
Also, I’m a little disappointed in you Louisville performance. Come on guys, we just picked you over them! Make it look like a good one!
Just a little pre-membership ribbing. The more I read about your program the more I like the tradition that you will bring.
Also, could you guys get a new coach before next season starts? We’ve seen plenty of Dana Holgerson’s offense and want nothing to do with it anymore. Maybe you could hire K-State’s defensive coordinator? He has a lot of experience (not) defending against high(and low)-powered offenses! We would love for you to take him off our hands!
Would you like some Freys with that?

Also
the Madsen clip… He has talent, but he lacks self control. He makes me very angry as a fan sometimes.
