We start next year!
Both the Big 12 and WVU have communicated that we’ll begin competing next year outside of the Big East! That’s amazing. Can’t wait til the football schedule comes out.

Why the f*** doesn’t Morgantown have a bigger airport close by?

This will be one humongous financial boon for Morgantown and it’s hotels, restaurants, etc.
OU, Okie lite, UT, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State travel BIG! Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech – not so much.
The problem will be the fans from OU – all your sales items will have to be in big block letters and simple – have flash cards ready. Accept that your restrooms will have to be unisex because they won’t know the difference. :-)
We’re Texas.
We don’t derive our value or self-definition from conference affiliation.
If that strikes people as cocky, so what? It’s also true. None of us will chant our conference’s name when we have an off year and Texas Tech wins their bowl game. Our definition of self comes from us – not our conference, not our rivals, not media perception.

Manhattan Regional Airport has direct flights to some major cities.
I don’t know about any to the east, but I’m pretty sure there are direct flights to and from Dallas.
Morgantown Municipal Airport

Did you know that Mountaineer Field's architects...
…also designed Jack Trice Stadium at Iowa State (which opened in 1975, five years earlier)? Anyway, this ISU fan welcomes WVU to the Big 12, though the travel each way is going to be interesting. You’ll enjoy Ames, a nice college town, and Hilton Coliseum is one of the more enthusiastic venues in both men’s and women’s basketball. (Conversely, I’m sure Big 12 visitors will like riding the PRT!)
Is it for real now?
I still feel hesitant to say it is over.
Time to expand Milan Puskar—needs over 80,000 seats I’d say.
Also I’m glad we start competing next year cause I graduate in ‘13. At least I get one year of Big 12 action. I’m very curious to see the schedule now because I imagine WVU already had their schedule set for next year.
Also what conference will Men’s soccer and rifle join? Big east still? Do any Big 12 schools have either of these programs?
Men's soccer will likely play in Conference USA
The University of Kentucky does since the SEC doesn’t sponsor men’s soccer.
I was wondering about the rifle team too.

2012 schedule
I hope we can keep our big-boy OOC gages for the future, it will make for a great home schedule. Also, for those fans and alumni across the fruited plains a lot more opportunities to see the team live. For those worried about fan support, go look at the following at the infamous Colorado game.
WVU athletics go in yet another direction...
A Mountaineer history lesson:
For several decades, WVU was a member of the Southern Conference, a varied group which ranged from the likes of Virginia Military Institute and next-door neighbor Washington & Lee to schools such as N.C. State and Davidson in North Carolina and Clemson and Furman in South Carolina. In 1953, seven SC members — Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina and Wake Forest — formed the Atlantic Coast Conference (which Virginia would join that December). Both WVU and Virginia Tech sought to join the ACC at its outset, but since both had voted in favor of a no-bowl policy in 1951 (Maryland and Clemson ignored it and both were ruled ineligible for conference football in ’52), neither was approved to join the new conference.
By the 1960s, WVU had outgrown the SC’s smaller remnants and became an independent. It changed its focus from southern to eastern, facing opponents such as Syracuse (longtime SU coach Ben Schwarzwalder was a WVU alumnus), Penn State, Boston College and others. It was a charter member of the Eastern Eight basketball conference, which actually preceded the Big East (members included Penn State and Pittsburgh, among others) but never quite got the right mix. In 1991, WVU joined the Big East for football, then joined it for all sports in 1995-96.
Now, WVU looks west by joining the Big 12.

Thanks for the summation
I’d been talking about the origin of the ACC with some folks the other day, and wasn’t quite sure why VTech and WVU weren’t invited in at the outset. That makes sense.

Hey guys.
Welcome to the Big 12 from a Texas Fan.
Look forward to playing each other in the future.
Quick question. If I were to come visit what are the living accommodations like?
Any nice hotels around?

Hotel Morgan is a Clarion Hotel. Stayed there couple times, right downtown.
There’s also the usual assortment of chain hotels. And Sheetz for gas, food and soft-core porn.

There’s the Waterfront, which is arguably the nicest hotel in Motown. It’s fairly close to downtown but not convenient to the stadium. The Residence Inn on Don Nehlen Dr. is the closest hotel to the stadium (if I ever had to stay at a hotel, I imagine picking this one). There’s also a Hilton Garden Inn about a mile from the stadium down 705. I’ve heard good things about it but have no personal experience there. The latter two are definitely walkable, as tons of cars line 705 on gamedays. The Hampton Inn on Van Voorhis is walkable, as well, and there’s lots of tailgating out there. When LSU came to town, I saw a lot of purple at that corner church.
Keep in mind most (if not all) Morgantown hotels have a 2-day minimum on gameday weekends. I don’t think this has changed but I’m sure you’d notice that once you start attempting to book.
I have friends that rent a town-home on Willow which is right across from the Light Blue Lot. If I take over the rent when they move out next year I’ll have a couple extra bedrooms haha.

I’m psyched about this.

Three Cheers for Oliver Luck and Dr. Clements
WVU had very little to sell, quite frankly, in terms of TV sets, recruiting footprint, etc. but they clearly made the right “pitch” to the Big XII. Is the conference we all dreamed about? No, that would be the SEC. However, the Big XII is a damn fine conference w/ competitive teams in football and men’s b-ball. I think it made the best possible moves possible by adding TCU and WVU. It instantly competes w/ the SEC and Big Ten for the best conference in the land in football and perhaps the best in mens b-ball (maybe behind ACC).
I for one am so glad that a new era has started in Morgantown. We certainly had great moments with Nehlen, Pastilong and even a great moment w/ Bill Stewart. However, the future is bright w/ these 2 gentlemen leading the charge. I feel that Holgorsen and Huggins fit the identity of WVU sports perfectly and hope they lead these 2 important programs to unprecedented success.
Mike Carey too.
WVU Women’s basketball is at the best level it’s ever been right now. Look forward to them squaring off against Baylor and Oklahoma..

Just
passing on some potentially juicy info. From a very reliable source (read: my Dad) either the major or a major factor that got this deal finished, especially after the doubt earlier in the week happened in Senator Rockefeller’s office.
According to my source, the chief lobbyist for Disney (who owns ABC and ESPN) was called into Rockefeller’s office. Rockfeller asked the lobbyist if Disney was looking for a senate committee investigation regarding potential tampering, etc, in college athletics and conference realignment. Next thing you know, WVU is in the Big XII.
Since many of you may doubt this (and I don’t blame you) I’d like to point out, nothing was supposed to happen until Monday.

A couple things from a 'Hawk fan
First, I wanna say welcome to the Big 12. I’m looking forward to the match ups on the court. Hopefully someday we can biuld our football to your level and we can get some good games on the field also (maybe one day ha ha).
Second, I don’t know if any of you have visited any KU boards and saw some of the comments being made, but I wanna apologize for some of my fan base. Through this conference realignment, I’ve realized that a lot of Jayhawks have a holier then thou attitude. Honestly, we can all agree that this isn’t the best scenario geographicly, but I’m all for making it work. (I’m about to make some excuses for my fan base) What I see from a lot of fans and what they’ve said about WVU, I believe it has nothing to do with you all. It has to deal with us being bitter about what’s happened to us in terms of members leaving. I think KU fans are hurt and now taking it out on you. Us and Nebraska was the second longest consecutively played game in the nation, and when the Mizzou (our bitter rival) game ends, that’s the second longest now. There is a lot of history being thrown away, and some of us have taken it personally. If you can’t tell, what people have said (not on rockchalktalk.com but other KU blogs) got under my skin and I felt I needed to apologize.
Once again, welcome and can’t wait til you start playing.
by hawkinwichita on Oct 28, 2011 11:07 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
No worries, hawk
Mountaineers aren’t thrilled about potentially losing Pitt, either. Though they’re not so much abandoning us as they are saving themselves, so I don’t think many Mountaineers hold that against them.’
However, ‘eers are still bitter at Virginia Tech, probably our second biggest rival, who did abandon us to the ACC, and then refuses to schedule an OOC game with us. (Probably because they don’t wanna lose.) So we understand.
Mizzou is silly for wanting out. The Big XII isn’t the most stable conference, no, but they were the right geographic and cultural fit for the Tigers, and they could compete here. They’re likely to become the next Mississippi State of the SEC. Oh well.

Well...
It’s the opposite for KU and Mizzou. Mizzou is leaving and KU doesn’t want to schedule them. Our AD and basketball coach has stated that publicly. I’m a firm believer that Mizzou is making the Big 12 more unstable. This is the second year in a row they’ve flirted with a new conference. Over the last 2 years, I’m glad Mizzou is leaving. I see it as moving on and to better things.
If you ever go TDY to McConnell for any reason, look me up. Wichita my not have a lot to offer but it can be a fun time. But then again, I don’t see why you come TDY here. Not much really happens at this Tanker base.

WVU vs. Big 12 in Directors' Cup (and C-USA men's soccer info)
West Virginia finished 40th nationally in the 2010-11 Directors’ Cup standings. Here’s how the rest of the Big 12 stacked up (teams entering in bold, leaving in italics):
8 Texas A&M
10 Oklahoma
12 Texas
32 Oklahoma St.
33 Nebraska
35 Baylor
40 West Virginia
41 Missouri
48 Texas Tech
53 Texas Christian
58 Kansas St.
60 Iowa St
66 Colorado
72 Kansas
Overall, WVU should fit in well. While it lacks an “evil empire” like Connecticut, the Big 12 is one of the strongest women’s basketball conferences in the nation (with good fan support up and down the league), and in baseball, WVU will be entering a conference far stronger than the Big East.
If WVU enters Conference USA for men’s soccer, it will be the 10th member of a league that features two SEC outsiders (Kentucky and South Carolina), one from the Sun Belt (Florida International) and six from C-USA (Alabama-Birmingham, Central Florida, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Methodist and Tulsa).
Texas is looked upon by many in the B12 as a MUCH more "evil empire" than Connecticut could ever DREAM of being.
