West Virginia University Is Big XII Bound (AGAIN): So Long Big East Celebration Thread

Big_12_logo3_medium

After another drawn out, gut wrenching wait...WVU has seemed to have finally FINALLY FINALLY escaped the clutches of the Big East.  To our fellow WVU fans and bloggers:

And to the Big East, especially John Marinatto:

We'll leave the lights on for you to turn off later.  Now...about that exit fee and 27 month wait...

Let it be known that Stillwater will welcome Dana back to the with open arms when WV plays here! We will just kick the 6 vagrants with $5.73 apiece out of #112, Dana’s old room!

not after next year

and depending on scheduling/27 month thing…could possibly be negotiable

by WVUIE97 on Oct 25, 2011 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’ll depend on whether Pitt keeps playing ND. If not then the brawl definitely continues. If they do, I’m not sure. As for other sports I imagine the brawl will still be played

Cardiac Hill contributor

by oaklandzoo12 on Oct 25, 2011 3:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not necessarily...

The Pac-12 plays a nine-game football conference schedule. (Of course, since the Austin Evil Empire decreed only 10 members and the serfs have meekly agreed, such talk is moot.)

by vp19 on Oct 28, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

The Brawl will be played in all sports

w/o a break in action, imo.

WVU/Marshall….that’s cute
Pitt/ND….that’s cute

WVU and PITT is THE rivalry of those 2 schools. It’s that simple. We need each other and the Backyard Brawl. Playing football w/o playing each other would be weird. It would make NO sense not to make this game happen EVERY year, ala Clemson/USC, Iowa/Iowa St.

Hell, we’re essentially “cross town” rivals.

by WVUColumbus on Oct 25, 2011 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

(PITT and WVU people agreeing on ANOTHER THING?!)

The Brawl should be played every year and I’d hate to see it become a Pitt/PSU type things where twice every decade or so.

Cardiac Hill contributor

by oaklandzoo12 on Oct 25, 2011 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Look for the following to happen:
WVU and PITT will play annually in all sports (perhaps not the first season due to logistics, scheduling, etc.)
WVU and Syracuse will play OFTEN in football and also in the other sports.

It’s not as imperative as the PITT rivalry but it will happen.

WVU’s biggest rivals have been in this historical order:
5. Penn St (although moreso to us than us to them)
4. Maryland
3. Syracuse
2. Virginia Tech
1. PITT
….actually Virginia Tech would be lower than the other 3 but they were a huge rival in the 80-00’s.

It would be a tremendous blunder on the part of Luck/Pederson not to maintain the Backyard Brawl. It is a national rivalry w/ a trademarked name that easily identifies the participants. It must and will continue. Luck is too astute not to understand the importance of the series.

Anyone else think once all the domino's fall, WVU may not be the only BE team heading to the 12?

I think it’s a real possibility that the 6 schools that the BE was targeting will now refuse the invites, and the Big 12 may go after UL and Cincy, at which point the BE will cease to exist as a fooball conference.

Very excited about this. Would like to see Louisville and Cinci eventually included as well to develop some natural rivals. And if we keep Pitt on the schedule this will just be a huge upgrade for having big time football games to watch.

Basketball ain’t shabby either….certainly the football upgrade is incredibly more substantial than any downgrade of the basketball league. Kansas, Texas, OK, etc, plus if Louisville and Cinci are brought in as well.

why we burn

wrote this explanation for my paper years ago — before we had a regularly updated web page, so it’s copied from the archive to my personal page.

and couches were kept on porches to allow for better lounging during the now-outlawed block parties.

i’m old.

by grumpnet on Oct 26, 2011 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions

One explanation

Morgantown’s Sunnyside neighborhood was (and probably still is) the province of some of the hardiest slumlords around. You can kiss your security deposit good-bye when you hand them the check.

Sunnyside apartments were often rented “furnished” with stuff the Salvation Army wouldn’t take. Given all that, might as well burn the couch, since a), you might get a new one, and b) you going to lose the security deposit anyway.

West Virginia fans hate everybody. They remember every snub and joke and bit of snark. And they never forgive, and they never, ever forget. In other words, they're a lot like West Virginians in general.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, This is a long term move for us..

Just be grateful that we have found a home among elite football and basketball programs in an outstanding conference. The last thing we should be contemplating is jumping around again in a few years.

Don’t forget that the Big 12 schools agreed to a give up Tier 1 and Tier 2 television rights while negotiating to keep TX, TX Tech, OK, and OK St. Once we are in, we are there for a minimum of 6 years (see below link):

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7006610/big-12-presidents-pledge-grant-television-rights-revenue-conference-according-oklahoma-president-david-boren

We could be one of the unfortunate remaining 5 BE schools whose options are shrinking quickly.

I for one am thankful and happy that the Big 12 saw the value that WVU and it’s athletics programs brings to the table.

Of course they're not done.

But that makes little difference. When media rights are granted, you’re locked in. Period. You’ll be in the Big 12 for 6 years, at least. I promise you. Might as well get used to the idea.

Really? That would be a total dick move.

Especially since we could have added someone else. If you’re going to join our conference, you should be committed to it, long-term, because if you won’t, someone else will.

Also, if y’all join, you’re not leaving for at least 6 years because you’ll be required to grant your media rights to the conference for that length of time. And after that period is up, I promise you that you won’t want to leave.

by Wrangler86 on Oct 25, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

a few reasons

- academics are terrible (as others noted)
- other sports are mostly terrible
- small stadium
- small-ish fan base
- another 300 miles farther from everyone than Provo or Morgantown

by drothgery on Oct 25, 2011 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

A few points of order from the Boise State side of things:

BSU basketball has a very bright future. We’ve got a good coach in Leon Rice, international recruiting is starting to pay off, and Big 12 money could improve the basketball program immensely. In the Olympic sports, we’ve won national titles in both mens’ and womens’ track and field, and the wrestling program is also very strong. And of course, we all know how good the football program is.

Bronco Stadium is small, there’s no denying that. But there are also plans in place to renovate the stadium. In this plan, the full capacity will be increased to 53,000. That’s bigger than the stadiums at K-State, Baylor, and Kansas, and only slightly smaller than Iowa State’s. It ain’t Darrell K. Royal by any stretch of the imagination, but for a school the size of Boise State, it’ll do.

We might not have the biggest fanbase, but we make up for it not only by traveling well but also with national appeal. The controversial nature of our team leads to big ratings whenever we play a big-name opponent.

No more worries about 45,000 ….Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU…we are going to need a bigger stadium.

You are correct on the expansion

The entire state of Oklahoma goes to their games as does the state of Kansas. In Texas UT and well,………UT travels big as well.

You will need to seat, at least, 90,000. Now, basketball – look for Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State to slam your basketball arena. The states of Oklahoma and Texas – not so much.

10 teams?

Must’ve misunderstood but why are media outlets reporting that adding WVU would allow Big XII to remain at 10 teams with Missouri’s departure, what about TCU?

by WVUCanadian on Oct 25, 2011 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

they lost Nebraska and Colorado before, then A&M to reach 9, TCU made 10, Missouri leaves and we become #10

by WVUIE97 on Oct 25, 2011 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

TCU replaced the Ags to stay at 10

And, you don’t want to know about the aggies. I think Texas paid the $EC to get rid of them.

Mizzou leaving drops us to 9 so WVu brings the Big XII back to 10. There are diffrent thoughts on going to 12 or not, but if we can get BYU or ND we would in a second. Also, the Big XII does own the rights to Big 14 and Big 16. And, I don’t think the Big XII wants to be bouncing at 9 again anytime soon.

BYU has some issues/concerns about playing sports on Sundays….which they are praying about and may have an answer shortly. I suspect the powers will come down similar to their answered prayers to integrate and not get kicked out of the ncaa. /s/ Too soon here>? Just let me know if I’m out of line yet.

Even if Big East football dies

The Big East will probably still exist … remember that there are eight schools other than the football schools, and they have no incentive to leave the Big East.

Basically – even if the Big East stops sponsoring football, it will probably still exist as a conference. Therefore the 27-month exit could still apply.

If they stopped sponsoring football next year, I’d suspect that WVU could get its football into the Big 12 immediately, but perhaps not its other sports.

I would think that the other BE schools might be willing to cut a deal and allow all of the football schools that want to leave (entirely) to get out early, probably for a higher paycheck.

Assumption is the mother of all @#%-ups.

by mdak06 on Oct 26, 2011 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

It will be difficult

The one thing that Commissioner Marinara still has going for him is the 27 month waiting period and he will not give that up easily. The way she describes it, if the Big East lets SU, Pitt and WVU out early they will loose AQ status and the $20 million+ that comes with it. Even if he can only keep the league together by force for two more seasons, that is two more paychecks that he will not want to give up.

Also, congratulations to WVU on finding a good home. Even though things got a little heated on the message boards last week, I think most SU fans want to see a healthy WVU in the long run.

Do we have access to the contract? That would be nice. It would also be nice if there was an escape clause—since the conference wasn’t run in the most competent sense, perhaps the legal framework is also poor.

It did seem wise to approve an exit-fee hike contingent on the accession of new schools. All three arbiters may have saved themselves a cool $5 million with that decision.

by J. Wil on Oct 25, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Cuse and Pitt

let be known they were withdrawing prior to the hike and unless Navy/Air Force join tonight before WVU leaves officially, WVU will not be subject to the extra $5 mil…but there is always the possibility of paying more (possibly even more than $5 Mil) to avoid the 27 month wait clause…that remains to play out

I seriously doubt that would happen

but if it did most people in the Big 12 would be cool with it since the television contract is coming up for renewal in six years anyway and they are holding out hope that they would finally cave and join the conference in football as well. As much as you hate Notre Dame, if they did join in ALL sports eventually you would definitely want to be a part of that conference. With them, Bevo and Oklahoma you could start printing money.

I agree, but trust in UT's AD DeLoss Dodds

The man doesn’t mess around and he thinks BIG. He isn’t likely to let ND play us for fools and be used like the Big East. We all saw that result.

ND is also on decline and they seem to be a diminishing asset. The shiny is a bit worn. They need a shot in the arm that joining the new Big XII train could bring. There may be some concessions since Texas and Big XII have valued some degree of independence (which of course lead to the current issues) but ND could fit in somehow but there will be football included. I could see something working out with ND and BYU.

Amen to that

I really do hope the Backyard Brawl continues as well. College football is built on these rivalries, and it wouldn’t be good for Pitt, WVU or college football in general if the series did not continue.

Given this momentous news, I am interested in what school would make out the better for recruiting (Pitt or WVU) since they do compete with each other highly in the same recruiting areas. My take is that Pitt wins out since WVU is a little bit geographically isolated in their new conference, but we can save this discussion for another day. Right now, just glad to be out of the Big East.

by PittGuy on Oct 25, 2011 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

WVU recruits western PA but not to the degree it does Maryland (Baltimore especially) and south FL. I think that WVU will end up w/ the recruiting edge as we’ll see more kids from Texas in Morgantown given the exposure to the new conference. Pitt won’t see a major change in their recruiting footprint.

by WVUColumbus on Oct 25, 2011 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Holgerson having ties to Houston and Okie Lite

Almost certainly he has some good recruiting connections in Texas. As a Longhorn I don’t really like that, but we are happy to have WVu in the confernece because you play your games on the field.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

by Wrangler86 on Oct 25, 2011 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Could argue the exact opposite as well

It is really hard to say. The problem is that WVU is now geographically more isolated and in a small state populace wise. They won’t be able to recruit the areas of Maryland as well, because there are no longer any conference affiliates in that region, and same thing for the state of Florida as the Big 12 has no connections there. However, WVU will be able to recruit Texas better. Only time will really tell what effect this has on WVU recruiting, but the Holgerson ties in the Big 12 region are definitely a plus.

by PittGuy on Oct 25, 2011 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

WVU has never relied on just one state...

Other than Florida, our team is made up of 2 & 3 star recruits from a wide variety of east coast states. Playing against Texas, Oklahoma and in a big time football conference will make WVU a more attractive option than playing in the ACC would.

Now basketball is another story altogether. WVU loses substantially in that department, as recruits will no longer be playing in the big east coast cities like New York, Boston, Philly, Pittsburgh, D.C. and the Carolinas. Huggins will have a real challenge getting b-ballers from the east coast to sign up for that.

by Mountaineer Chuck on Oct 25, 2011 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree on basketball but not on football

We will save the recruiting discussion for another day, as it really does pale to the over-arching news of the day. It’s a momentous day for college sports in WVU, assuming that Missouri does leave the Big 12 which seems like a certainty.

Both Yahoo and Sportsline are saying the acceptance is contingent, but ESPN is not. Who knows what to believe. The fact that it’s 9:16 pm Eastern already and there is no official report out of WVU tells me that it is contingent.

Sigh of relief...and

I feel our alignment with a “real” conference now makes WVU a “final destination” for good coaches instead of being viewed as a “stepping stone.” Granted, we have some great people on staff now that have made WVU their career, but we have seen some good young coaches move through here pretty fast, too. I think that maybe in the back of Holgo’s mind that WVU may not have been a career place for him, but now that is subject to change. Just my opinion, curious to hear your thoughts

by CaptainMorgantown on Oct 25, 2011 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

I think that is a definite possibility, but it remains to be seen how WVU will perform in the Big 12. I know that West Virginia is a small state, but my GOD the coaches have the whole state to themselves, not to mention the surrounding states. A quality coach will use this to his advantage in the arena of recruiting.

I’m sure winter can be a great change of pace for you guys that are used to it – but you don’t have to play football in sleet and snow and have to wear things like an overcoat or muffler (what are those things, anyway?).

We’re Texas.
We don’t derive our value or self-definition from conference affiliation.
If that strikes people as cocky, so what? It’s also true. None of us will chant our conference’s name when we have an off year and Texas Tech wins their bowl game. Our definition of self comes from us – not our conference, not our rivals, not media perception.

Welcome aboard, By-Godders. If we’re only taking one team for expansion, I’m glad it’s you. Now see if y’all can help convince the Big 12 about the wisdom of having a number of teams equal to their title.

Welcome aboard!

This Baylor alum welcomes you to the Big 12. I have family in West Virginia and look forward to visiting your stadium.

Now about Louisville & Cincinnati: The Big 12’s current Tier 1 & 2 television contracts are for 10 teams. The Tier 1 contract is up for negotiation and takes effect in 2015. I expect the negotiation will be for 12 teams and will include Louisville & Cincinnati. We know that West Virginia needs some of its traditional rivals for the conference expansion to be stable and successful. Plus it will give us a nice wedge between the Big 10, ACC & SEC. Two can play this expansion game. The Big 12 is only 15 years old and new on the block. We’re learning from our mistakes and are adjusting accordingly.

FYI, Nebraska, Colorado, & Missouri wanted out of the Big 8 before the Big 12 ever came into existence. (The Big 8 almost collapsed in the early ‘90s). A&M planned to go to the SEC when the Southwest Conference folded but Texas politicians prevented that from happening. So what you are seeing from these 4 schools has really nothing to do with TU and the Big 12. Texas University makes a convenient whipping boy because they have a serious attitude problem. You’ll learn to appreciate them in time.

Yep

We can have a friendly drink over our departures of the BE at the Backyard Brawl this year. Now what we need you WVU people to do is convince the Big 12 to take Louisville and Cincy so the BE officially folds, and we won’t have to worry about this 27 month thing.

all this peace, love and happiness between possibly former and definitely future rivals kinda reminds me of the extended celebration scene at the end of “return of the jedi.”

Welcome, 'Neers. That's what you call yourselves, right?

As you can see, there are lots of us UT fans. But the fan bases of the rest of the Big 12 teams are all pretty cool, too. I particularly like Kansas State fans and Baylor fans.

I’ve always liked West Virginia and rooted for you guys. Your addition will actually make the Big 12 a more difficult and competitive conference. I look forward to battling it out with y’all in coming years. Although it might be best to wait as long as possible to join because we’re going to be pretty devastatingly good next year, in large part because of this gentleman.

I’m just messing with y’all.

Maybe we couldn’t be any more different; we’re urban while you’re rural, we’re a bunch of treehuggers while you’re blowing up a bunch of mountains for coal, but I think we’ll get along just fine.

I’m excited about the basketball side of it all.

Card Fan Here

Congrats, WVU. Gonna miss the basketball and football (pre-Kragthorpe) games. Hopefully the rumors of the Big XII staying at 10 aren’t true. Hate to see our young rivalry go down in flames. That said, I have complete faith in our AD, Tom Jurich, to get us out of the sinking ship known as the big east. I was hoping to go to the Big XII back when Colorado and Nebraska left and everybody thought I was crazy. Huge upgrade in FB and not much fall off in BB. Could still happen, but doesn’t look good. Maybe if Rick Pitino would just STFU….

by cstacks74 on Oct 28, 2011 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

The Big XII will go to 12...

…eventually. Maybe not this year. But it WILL happen at some point. I think that’s UL’s only real option as far as AQ, anyway.

I know a lot of your fans want the ACC, but that won’t happen. Last time I looked Louisville is tied with WVU in academic rankings, and that alone will keep them out.

If the SEC ever goes to 16, Louisville could potentially be a target but I think UK would veto you, but now that WVU is off the table, it’s more likely. However, if it takes a few years, if they went after WVU, I could see us bolting for geography’s sake.

Louisville will be Big XII bound. I fully believe the Big XII took us first to take us off the trading block, as we are one of the more valuable “free agents” and so the SEC wouldn’t look toward us in the future. Louisville is next. Adding Louisville and CIncinnati would be great for the conference and give West Virginia regional rivals.

Thanks for the vote of confidence...

Saw you had posted on the chronicle before McConnellgate and said basically the same thing. A couple a$$hole Card fans got outta line with you, so good to see you have no hard feelings. Anyway, hope you’re right. SEC makes too much sense for it to happen though. Aside from the little boys in blue at uk and Florida, SEC basketball is pretty awful. Every few years they have 1 other team step up to mediocrity but that’s about it. PS, thanks for sending uk home a couple years ago in the tourney. Made my March.

by cstacks74 on Oct 28, 2011 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha, made my march too.

I have an uncle I love dearly that lives in Louisville and is a die hard Cards fan. I’ll never root against them, unless they’re playing us of course.

Fact is Louisville is too valuable to waste away in a conference without an AQ. The Big XII wants U of L, don’t doubt that. Expansion will continue, as well. The Big XII will go to 12, it’s just a matter of time.

I think they preferred U of L immediately, but took WVU as they are a potential SEC target if they go to 16/if the world ends and Mizzou, in fact, stays. (Though that would be a great scenario, forcing them to go to 12 now that they’ve made the committment to WVU.)

What's it going to take?

What’s it going to take to get the Big East to release WV so they can play next season? Maybe if the Big 12 takes Louisville now the Big East football program will fall apart and with it the (ridiculously long) waiting period. We want to play WV NOW!

2012 Big 12 football schedule

With the Big 12 already having their 2012 schedule out (based on a 10-team conference) depending if we fill the UM or A&M slot, or potential schedule looks like this:

Missouri’s slotOklahoma
K State
@ Iowa St
@ Ok ST.
Tex A&M – TCU
Baylor
@ Texas
@ Texas Tech
Kansas

Texas A&M slot @ Ok St
Texas Tech
@ Baylor
Iowa St
@ Mo. @TCU
Oklahoma
K State
@ Kansas
@ Texas

Ether way, what a great schedule of home games, especially if we keep 1 or 2 of our rivalry games, and the planned OOC games with Fl State/MIchigan state. And the road trip opportunities!! Whatever needs to be done to get out for next year needs to happen.
