The Shotgun/Throwdown: Tuesday (10/25/11) Edition

Lefthandoktoberfest_medium

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions.  We're being brought to you today by Left Hand Oktoberfest Märzen Lager.

In today's edition both Rutgers and WVU are searching for answers following losses this past weekend.  Jerry West spoke at the University last night and opened up about the darker side of his personal life.  And Huggs has a shooting guard commitment for next season.

But, the biggest news (and it's hot off the presses) is this:

WVU set to leave Big East for Big 12 - NY Post
The Big East Football Conference's survival as a league with automatic-qualifier (AQ) status is about to take a serious hit because the Big 12 has lined up West Virginia to replace Missouri, The Post has learned.

The process of writing his new autobiography "West on West: My Charmed, Tormented Life" was painful, and discussing its contents in recent weeks has "not been fun" according to WVU and NBA legend Jerry West.  But the book needed to be written, for reasons he explained on Monday at the Coliseum.

News of Note:

An Issue Of Effort - BGN
Since even the earliest moments after his team’s 49-23 loss to Syracuse on Friday night, Dana Holgorsen has consistently stated that WVU did not deliver the same level of effort as the Orange.  As for why that occurred, the first-year head coach was less certain.

West Virginia to Big 12?

Conference realignments are a sign of some type of financial sickness. I have always found it odd that in some small states, it is accepted that there are two or three major college programs where in others there is but one.
That said, as a Tech alum I will be happy to see WV in the Big 12. It is a good school, strong fanbase, good sports…I live in the eastern timezone and will enjoy having a few Big 12 games here. Further, it will be much easier to take in a few games in person.
As far as the Big 12 reconfigured, the only regret I have is seeing Nebraska leave. Tech had some success against them, but the main thing is they were knowledgable and enthusiastic fans. A&M and Mizz seem to have prima donna disease and Colorado is a perennial underachiever at just about everything.

i think it will happen...

WVU to Big 12, however, why in the hell would the New York Post be the only newspaper with “sources” close enough to get the story? No paper in the Big 12 region is reporting this. Also, if you go to the story on the New York Post website, at the top of the page under “News”, the first article is “LiLo (lindsay lohan) nude pix”. I think we will probably end up in the Big 12 also, but by no means will I ever trust a newspaper like this. I am personally waiting for Oliver Luck to make an announcement before I will ever buy anything these “sources” say. It’s all bullshit.

granted...

Lohan posing for Playboy will mark the first time a camera has ever gotten an STD from simply taking a picture of a person, but to file it under your “News”, loses credibility in my book. “Entertainment” section maybe, but not your headline news of the day.

I mentioned this article out of Texas in another thread that seemed to point at WVU as the top target if in fact Missouri leaves. I think the NY Post article somewhat confirms the information there. Whether or not any of it is true, I don’t know. The Big East is in real trouble, though, and it would not surprise me to see WVU get out while it still can.

I just wish Missouri would make up their minds—I hardly consider them an elite school so I don’t quite follow all the hype as to how they are the lynchpin in all this movement. Regardless of my opinion, it does seem to be the case for whatever reason.

And here is an ESPN article that discusses similar findings. For what it’s worth, anyway.

I find most of this just shadow games and am more interested in seeing this come to a conclusion, perhaps regardless of the outcome.

I'll believe it when the AD says it. But if he says it,

I will be eternally grateful that we’ll be stepping off the Titanic. Big 12 is awesomeness compared to what we are in now.
