The Shotgun/Throwdown: Wednesday (10/12/11) Edition

Lakefront-oktoberfest_medium

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions.  We're being brought to you today by Lakefront Oktoberfest.

The off week rolls on and the team is focusing on focus, rhythm and execution while the coaching staff begins making recruiting trips.  If you missed it yesterday, Coach Holgorsen had his weekly presser (we have video) and Hoppy went on the Finebaum show and gave the SEC listeners his best pitch for WVU (we have a link to the podcast).  There's some more Big East "expansion" news as well.  All this and more...

Star-divide

From Bill Connelly's weekly SB Nation Numerical:

10.9: Average yards per play generated by West Virginia over a six-drive span in which they seized control of their 43-16 win over Connecticut. As is quickly becoming their custom, the Mountaineers struggled for a little while, scoring just 10 points and averaging 4.8 yards per play over their first seven drives of the game. But when they got rolling, the points added up quickly. Receivers Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin and Ivan McCartney combined to catch 20 of 29 passes thrown their way for 383 yards and three touchdowns, and UConn's hit-or-miss offense just couldn't keep up.

What is Mandel getting at with the article about the Big East losing its BCS bid?

He cites no facts or sources, just pure speculation. I’m not saying it can’t or won’t happen, but there are certain criteria. And considering the Big East’s performance in those criteria (mostly based on the final BCS standings every year), the conference has done fine. It’s not like Pitt or Syracuse have gone to a BCS bowl in the last 5 years, so their loss shouldn’t hurt the Big East’s numbers. I guess I’d like to see something more official than just Mandel spouting off about how bad the conference sucks.

since when

does he ever bombard anyone with facts? Look back on his statements of a supposed rift between the O and D staff members of WVU’s football coaches

Mandel

usually goes against WVU in just about everything. I used to enjoy his articles until I realized Sports Illustrated pays him to give his opinion on everything without backing anything up with legitimate facts.

aq

i was always under the impression that a team in a bcs conference merely had to finish well in the standings to maintain its status. didn’t know there was a formula.

my understanding

non AQ conference/non BCS conf teams must be in a certain range of BCS standings, but I’m not sure of the certainty of their inclusion in the BCS games….maybe only one locked spot for Non-AQ schools, if they qualify

There is a rolling average to qualify the conferences themselves

si power ranking

just a wee bit disappointed in their choice. a franchise joint? (albeit home to some of the best hangover food in the state.) missed some real local flavor there.

on the other hand, while it lacks charm, it’s emblematic of the fanbase: salty, fluffy and and full of fat.

We

fat, fluffy and salty Mountaineer fans highly resemble that last comment.
