The Shotgun/Throwdown: Capital Classic Hangover (1/20/11) Edition

Dscn3102_medium

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions.  We're being brought to you today by Griesedieck beer, because that's what last night sucked.

Wow, was that awful!!!  Just a terrible game all around.  Yes, the refs spent the whole night quality testing their whistles, but that was admittedly awful both ways.  Some blame karma, as Nunes Magician does here, for the court storming Sunday.  Others might point to the fun we had yesterday5YS has another theory.  Hopefully this gets the last ugly loss out of their system for the season and this team finally gets some full-time focus going on.  The women, on the other hand, had no trouble focusing last night, holding MU to a record low 21 points.  All of the post-game fallout is inside, as well as a few other bits to cover.

Today's Miss Throwdown is another reason for my fascination with Eastern European women.  Hailing from Poland, please join me in saying dzień dobry to Monika Pietrasinska.  Here's a three page gallery (picture link) to help you recover from last night's loss (fair/slight warning:  page 1 is completely SFW, pages 2 & 3 are SFW too...but barely).  Na zdrowie!!!

i am going on record...

to say that the referees were terrible. and when i say terrible, i mean that they were calling so many bad calls against Marshall it was pathetic. it was like they were WVU grads with bets on the Mountaineers. sure, there were a couple of bad foul calls against WVU (e.g. the foul on Mazzulla on the rebound), but seriously, the fouls on the 3-pointers near the end of the game were bad. don’t forget about the “violation” for the guy swinging his elbows. or the strip of Mazzulla that he acted like he was getting beaten. make no mistake, the refs sucked, but it was nowhere even close to even both ways. i would say that if there were 10 (arbitrary number) of bad calls, 8 of them would have gone against Marshall. for the first time in my life EVER, i felt like the refs were being unfair to the team against whom my team was playing. FIRST TIME EVER! usually there’s a blind-eye to things like this, because our judgement is skewed thinking that all calls should go our teams’ way, but honestly, Marshall was getting screwed and still won. Congratulations Herd, you outplayed all 8 of us that were on the floor!

We came out and played like it was just a game

whereas Marshall came out like it was the National Championship. That was the difference between the two teams last night.
