TSM Coaching Approval Meter (Post-LSU, 2010)
WVU went into Death Valley and didn't quite come out alive, losing to LSU 20-14 on Saturday night. The loss has been discussed ad naseum, but that doesn't mean it's not time for another TSM Coaching Approval Meter, because it is. As far as I can tell, this is the only poll that (unscientifically, as it may) tracks the approval ratings of Bill Stewart & Co. on a week-to-week basis.
So, regardless if you approve or disapprove, make your opinion known.
Here are last week's results, along with the season average:
Last week: 69%
Season average: 54%
Note: As always, please explain your vote in the comments. Thanks!

I voted yes
Because this team went down 17-0 quickly, but battled bnack to be within a TD with a chance to win it late. But due to some bad play calls and some good defensive plays by LSU kept us from winning. But all in all I am pleased with how that game turned out, if we can hang with LSU in Tiger Stadium at night in a game no one picked us to win we should dominate the BE
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

I voted no based on the actual performance of the offense, defense and special team over the 30 games Bill Stewart has been in charge.
The offense has been downright embarrassing.
The special teams have for the most part been bad.
The defense has been pretty good.
In addition, the individual parts have been better than the sum of the whole for each of his 2.3 seasons as head coach, and there are only a handful of games that it could even be argued that we played to our potential.
So, it’s a pretty easy vote. As the vote can only be based on what they have done and not what you hope for, no I do not approve of the job currently being done by Bill Stewart and staff.
No
because we were the more talented team Saturday night and lost…, again. No way we should have lost that game, but everyone knew we were going to… We are irrelevant on the national scene and will stay that way as long as HCBS is in charge. If we win out and win the BE (I don’t think we will), we still lost to the ONLY ranked team we will play this year.
YES
We are 3-1 and almost beat a Top 10 team on the road.
After 3 years HCBS is 22-9.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

You always vote yes after dismal performance because we won and that’s all that matters. Then after a loss, you still vote yes? People vote no after wins because the performance is indicative of what is to come if we continue to play that way, i.e. losses. You say, as long as we win it’s okay. But we do lose, and you still vote yes. I just don’t understand it.
We are 3-1 and almost beat a Top 10 team on the road.
I hate moral victories.

Your joking right? 22-9 against garbage competition. The only good team we played in two years has been UC. We have been smoked by USF 1, UC 2, Colorado 1, ECU 1, Pitt 1, FSU 1, Auburn 1, and LSU 1. The point is there is probably only one legit team we should have lost to in all those teams. We have the 59th and 61st rated offense those two year, what a complete disgrace. I’ll give credit where credit is due and there isn’t any due here. He has one against a watered down BE, this isn’t the same BE the product played in, UL sucks, Uconn sucks, Pitt is well pitt and Rutgers has leveled out. be real.
Really?
Yeah, barely 3-1. Should be 4-0… Almost does not cut it! This is not Jr. High where it is okay to have a “good loss”. We were beaten by ourselves hell, even the players will agree to that! LSU took advantage of our poor preparation and play calling and our staff did NOTHING to prevent it. This should have been a signature win by a seasoned team and what do we get, “Aw well golly gee folks, They are Mountaineers they will step up.” Bull Shit! This man is a joke. His staff is mediocre and getting worse/leaving, yet he still does nothing. Stewarts, “Well gosh, as long are the lads are having fun, it’s okay.” mentality is a bunch of crap! Losing is not fun, barely winning against lower level, sub par teams is not fun. Oust this goon and lets get a coach that has a pair and is not afraid to use em. I feel bad for all of the talented young men on our squad that are being squandered by this fools ineptitude. “almost beat a top ten team on the road” Phhht! Dude they were you getting your facts? They were not in the top 10 when we played them, and are only ranked 10th (in ONE poll), now because they beat us. By the way, I voted no.

We didn’t quit. And character comes from the head man.
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

I Am Going To Lapse Into Nancyville, here....
…above, ESP makes the incorrect and broad generalization that “Bill Stewart will never do any wrong” in some fan’s eyes….what? Even the pro-regime peeps have been critical.
Fifth, all most people do here is “hate…” I am reminded of a line I read a Garrison Keillor book that went something like: “interscholastic football…the passion of unhappy men.”
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

HELL NO since the beginning
Nothing Mullen or Johnson can do at this point to change my mind. HCBS has no clue how to be a head coach or he would save his own skin and clean house. If there were ever a time we could have beaten LSU this year was it.
That's not a positive stance.
Really, this is the opinion that is absolute bullshit. It’s not even an opinion, it’s just putting your hands over your ears and making loud noises. The reasonable anti-Stew crowd would concede if we starting dominating opponents and winning every game (however unlikely that may be). But your “nothing can change my mind” threat is just stupid.

NO NO NO NO NO
I vote no every week as there is always a glaring error in coaching. WVU has top 10 talent with top 25 results. Not acceptable at all. However, Bill Stewart and his staff would be great greeters at Wal-Mart. Sorry casteel you should not be lumped in with these other clowns.
Have you ever seen Mike Tomlin and Omar Epps in the same place at the same time?

I said
That the game Saturday would have been a chance for me to swing my vote over with a win. Well, that didn’t happen. And I said if they lose a game similar to the one like Auburn last year then my vote stays no forever. Well, I suppose it wasn’t a turnover fest like Auburn, but the fact remains there were key mental breakdowns that cost the team a chance at a victory. Once again.
And that is my overarching point. Stewart has beaten one football team worth a damn in two years. Now, don’t go telling me we have played other teams tough. Because I’m not buying it. The talent is there to win those games. Besides, you can’t say win is a win (Marshall 2010) then move the goalposts on a close lose. Because it is still a close lose. And there is a big enough sample size for me to see that things won’t be changing and more close loses are coming down the pike until Luck decides he has had enough.
So my vote is an emphatic NO.
Btw, Charley, you ask for comments, but what was your vote. Where is your stance?
Oh, you noticed I hadn't answered?
I haven’t even voted yet, actually. I will have a lengthy post (likely, tomorrow) that will definitely put my vote down on paper.
by Dr. Charley West on Sep 29, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
i voted no...
i don’t care that we could have beaten LSU. i don’t think that we almost beat them. if we had almost beaten them, we would have moved the ball when it counted and we didn’t. didn’t even get past our own 25 (i don’t know that for a fact, i’m just remembering from my pissed-offness).
the reason i voted no is brandon hogan. there is absolutely no way that i can give anyone on our coaching staff one bit of respect from the way this was handled. HE WAS DRIVING DRUNK…COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE VERY EASILY. and he gets suspended for ONE DAMN GAME. ONE DAMN GAME!
as soon as i heard about him getting suspended, i told my wife, “he’ll be back for the LSU game.” at the time, i didn’t realize how close it was on the schedule. ONE DAMN GAME!!!
this incident has made me lose all respect for each one of the coaches. it only takes one of them to say, “hey coach, this idiot should be off the team, or else miss at least 4 games.” you don’t go from a DRUNK DRIVER to a model citizen in less than 2 weeks. can’t happen.
if we would have won this game, i would still vote no here, and i will always vote no here from now until the last time this is a question. let me clarify, i am still cheering for our boys 100% and always will. but this question simply asks do i approve of the job done by our coaching staff, and since they have no sense of decency, discipline, or common sense, they can all suck it.
Yes
You would think the coach that says lame lines like ’i’m here to build character not characters’ would have made a stand. Nope. He’s just a phony like the rest of them (and not in a ‘man, that michael jordan is so phony’ way).
But what makes matters worse for me is he buys the shit he’s selling. Thankfully, he won’t be peddling his garbage for that much longer.
I'm voting yes.
Moral victories do count. I’m sorry, that team was down 17. They could have packed it in, hell it sounds like a lot of you did, but they fought back. The HCBS bashers will blame him for everything, the loyalists will praise him.
There is always talk about about gut check time and do you have the heart, do you have the desire? Why are you bashing these players for coming back? I think it’s commendable that they did.
Now, if we are bashing anything, let’s bash this poll. It makes no sense. Let’s set parameters. Are we grading HCBS on the length of his career? On the season as a whole so far? Or is this an individual game poll? that needs to be spelled out in all caps with flashing signs around it. Because some are taking it game by game and some (who use this to bash the man) take it on a career record.
I voted yet BECAUSE this team came back from being down big, BECAUSE this team played LSU tough, BECAUSE Stewart or the special teams coach or the punter (whoever you want to give credit to) had the guts to kick to Patterson. I hate avoiding a player who gets hyped up so much everyone buys into it. At least they said, ok, if you are that good, lets see it in person. It didn’t work out the way we hoped, but they didn’t back down like a pussy that some on here would have been if they were making that call.
I voted yes BECAUSE you can’t hold a suspension of a player against the man. IF you go out in and get busted for a DUI and say you are an office manager, should you be suspended from your job for 30 days? Should it have an impact on your work performance? And don’t say, he represents the school, the team. Every student at WVU represents that school. Every person represents family, work, etc… That should never come in as a factor. The kid made a bad choice. Stewart sat him for a game. He probably has counseled him and had him do a bunch of behind the scenes things.
Anyhow, enough of my high horse. I’m voting yes purely because they did make adjustments, they did not quit, they hung in tough in a place that is notorious to play at.
by BurghMountaineer on Sep 29, 2010 1:33 PM EDT reply actions
most office managers...
busted for a DUI would get fired. and if they didn’t, i’d have just as much of a problem with that.
I've had two bosses caught for a DUI...
and neither were fired or even docked pay. It did not happen at work and has nothing to do with job performance.
Having said that, Hogan should not have played Saturday night at LSU. I was extremely disappointed that Stewart made the decision to let the young man play. A four game suspension would’ve been appropriate in my eyes.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

and yet in other places they would think you unduly harsh
A “four game suspension”? How did you pick that number? The SEC seems to think one game is sufficient. The NFL thinks one quarter of one game is all that’s needed.

NO! Theres a different in "getting the job done" and "doing a good job"...
… and Stew and the staff represent the more of the first (wins over shitty teams) than the later (wins over impressive teams and steamrolling bad ones).
Since Sept. 2008 he’s lost every game he’s coached against equal or marginally better talent and has done nothing to make up for those losses to inspire confidence moving forward.
We have ONE win in 2+ seasons over a ranked team, that being Pitt last year. We have losses to Colorado, Auburn, LSU, East Carolina, Pitt, Florida State, and twice to Cinci and no impressive wins to make up for those. Beating Maryland doesn’t count for much, lets see how many games the Terps win this year. Beating a 4-8 Auburn team that got Tuberville fired doesn’t count for much.
If we had won last weekend, I would feel differently. If we had continued to build on what we showed against Maryland, I would feel differently. But the “they didnt quit” bullshit has to stop. Tell me how much better this team looks than they did when they lost to CU 2 years ago. Or Auburn last year. Or FSU in the bowl game. There has been no moving forward from this staff to figure out HOW to win games.
coaching
the hiring of coach stewart was a farce. joe manchin and mike garrison, his lackie, made this decision without the imput of ed pastilong or anyone else. they should have completed the interview process and then acted. at the time west virginia was a top notch program. jimbo fisher, tommy bowden, skip holtz and doc holliday were available. since being at wvu how many schools asked permission to talk to stewart about a head coaching job?it is inexcusable for this coach to then hire two unqualified coaches at offensive coordinstor and line coach. the results of these hires is obvious. in his third year we still do not have a back up tailback.nor a back like steve slaton. incompetence.

No
The offensive ineptitude displayed Saturday just made me ill. Granted, LSU will be the best defense we face all year but 177 total yards of offense is unacceptable. Especially considering the Tigers were gracious enough to spot us over 80 yards on penalties.
I do not have much of a complaint about the punt return TD. An All-American athlete made a play. It was thrilling to watch, even though iy was a dagger in the heart. I also do not believe in moral victories, but I was proud of the team battling back from that 17-0 hole.
