Game Thread: National Semi-Finals - WVU vs. Duke
West Virginia Mountaineers at Duke Blue Devils, Apr 3, 2010 9:12 PM EDT

Like I said this morning, 40 minutes for 40 more. We do what we do. We play to WIN the game!!! The experience is certainly nice, but that's not why we're here. Seems like no matter who we beat, it's not enough for national respect. Like Jake Taylor and The 25314 said, "I guess there's only one thing left to do." (answer linked from quote, Warning: strong language) Let's show the second set of blue bloods in as many weeks how we ball in the hills at WVU!!
As always, and forever...

I swear to God I’m not drunk, I just can’t type on an iPhone. I was hoping to watch the game in Morgantown, but am stuck in the airport in ATL till my 10pm flight to Pittsburgh. I’ve got my WVU shirt on and I’ll find an airport bar so I can watch the game. Let’s Go Mountaineers!!!

make a lot of noise
just not enough to have Airport Security take you away. (I hate Hart Field, BTW)
the crowd presence
Watching on TV, it looks like we are extremely well represented… there’s lots of old gold out in the crowd and when we take the court I expect us to be LOUD.
Anyone else notice that HUGE flying WV in the stands? Is that unique to us? I’ve been watching for a bit, and I don’t see any other schools represented like that.
LET’S GO…..

The title for the main sites pre-game report for this game is priceless
“Duke Hopes To Beat West Virginia, Make Rest Of America Resent Them Even More”. I didn’t know it was possible to hate those blue balls bloods anymore than I already do

This airport is crazy busy
But I found a table at The Sports Scene. Let’s do this.

C'mon guys
This Duke team can’t miss.
Somehow they seem to be getting away with murder against WVU.

play
The play of this game favors Duke. Seems like they almost can do no wrong. Wish the officials would start calling some stuff on Zoubek. He’s doing whatever he wants and not getting called.

so does Dook get to chose the officals for their games

I have faith
That are team is not afraid of Duke and will make a nice run and come back.
But these officials, though the fouls are close, are seemingly not calling obvious stuff when WVU has the ball.

Not looking good
8 on 5 is not easy to do. Seems like WVU makes small run, the refs turn the tide for Duke.

I will never forget this run
I’m extremely proud to be a Mountaineer. Hope Da is ok and has a great NBA career. On another note stay one more year Ebanks and improve your game and lead this team deep into the tourney next yr

Sad to see it over
But what a great season. They really made their fans proud. I just wish it could have lasted one more game. Hope those guys hold their heads up high.
Da’ I hope you heal up soon. It’s a shame your career had to end that way. If anyone at all rips Huggs for the way he is with his players, it’s unfortunate, but they just need to see how he held Da’Sean. He’s one hell of a coach who has the respect and love of his players.
Shame the classlessness of Duke showed, shooting 3’s with 20 seconds left. But what do you expect from a team and school like that.

I'm still trying to figure out how its a foul on Da when he is the one rolling on the floor in Agony
has anyone else figured that one out because I’m confused

I was so frustrated
Did they call a foul on Da’Sean? WVU just never got a break in that game. D wasn’t on par with what we expect. Duke couldn’t miss from outside. Their big man shoved us around and didn’t get called until the 2nd half. Da’Sean goes down. The Rat gets to run around trying for another title. Oh and we at home got to listen to Dickie V jr, Jim Nance and his love affair for Duke.
Tough way to end a season.
by BurghMountaineer on Apr 3, 2010 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes they called a Charge on Da
and Jim Nance sounded shocked when Brian Zuback got his 10th rebound. Know I get to listen to Gotleib talk about how we should have not made it this far how Dook is just better than every one else on the face of the planet(yes this include all 30 NBA teams) and how they are just going to wipe the court with Butler on Monday.

disappointed is an understatement, but...
You haven’t seen the last of WVU in the Final Four and it won’t be 51 years until the next one.

he thinks its only a sprain. I hope he is ok.

PROUD
Just damm proud of those guys. I loved how Huggs embraced Da when he was down, he truly cares about his players and they would take a bullet for him. Glad he’s our coach.
KEN
I totally Agree
I just wish we had not looked like a bunch of chikens with our cut off while we were playing “defense”

hopefully this will help with recruiting we need a few more players to get over that HUMP, damn close, sometimes you gotta fail first before you can win…I still say the NCAA tournament committee can suck a phat one, meet the newest BUTLER BULLDOG FAN…
If this loss teaches us anything
its that we need a big guy in the middle, and find room in the Basketball budget for bribing officals pulling a Duke or maybe acting classes

I liked his quote when he went out to console Da
“He’s an All-American Player and he get a foul called on him”. That may not be the excat quote but you get the jist of it

Proud!
Refs sucked…but hell of a ride guys! I’m sad but look at this….
Beat Georgetown for Big East Championship…
Beat Morgan State…..
Beat Missouri…….
Beat Washington……
Beat Kentucky…….
Played against Duke (puke in the final 4) who very well could win National Championship…..
Thank you TEAM and COACH for an EXCEPTIONAL season. You all made the Mountaineer Nation PROUD more than once! Team and Mountaineers…Don’t be sad about not winning tonight, you are all champions in our hearts. Da’Sean, I hope you are okay (Wells and Cam – thank you)….once a Mountaineer, Always a Mountaineer! I don’t care what school wins the NC now. No SCHOOL or STATE in this country can have more PRIDE, heart felt appreciation and LOVE than we have had for you all over this run! LET’S GO…MOUNTAINEERS! and as a Mountaineer…there is always next year! Happy Easter everyone!
God Bless America
WVUD
I'll join in on that sentiment.
I’m so very proud of what the team accomplished this year. And with Bob Huggins as our coach, I can confidently say, “Just wait ’til next year.”

A Duke fan, but a by-godder at heart
I really was pulling for WVU in this game. I really was. I wanted the Mountain State to have a national title, and I wanted it bad. I’m a Duke fan, but I still wanted to WVU to go all the way. They are my football passion, they are my home state, and I wanted this BAD. It could (and should) have been a closer game, but I will never forget this team and what they’ve accomplished. Huggs, Butler, Smith, Ebanks, Jones, Flowers, Mazulla, Bryant, and the rest of the Mountaineers, Thank You.
And, I know a lot of WVU fans were mad a the late three pointer Duke made, but the kid that made it (Jordan Davidson) is a non scholarship player who NEVER gets to play. It wasn’t like Duke was pouring on points. It was a kid having his moment. That is NOT classless on Duke’s part.
really?
up by 15+ and you go for three…
yeah ok

Oregon Mountaineer said it for me
Sure, Davidson has team memories that he can tell his grandchildren about, which is awesome, but that was his one personal memory and moment. He NEVER gets a chance to get in, he’s a senior, and he’s a walk-on.
I TRULY am sorry about you guys being so upset over Duke’s “classless” moves. But you’re wrong. You are only hating and complaining because it said “DUKE” on the front of the jerseys, and you are trying to find any excuse to bash them. If Scheyer or Singler made that three at the end, I’d be right with you, and I’m a Duke fan. But you have to understand the story behind the kid that made it. I’m sure Coach K told him if he got an open shot to take it. But that’s not the same as pouring on points, and you know it.
Stop hating just because it’s Duke. That’s a UK thing. We’re better than that.
Can't agree with you at all
about the kid coming off the bench. He is responsible for knowing the score, the way the game is going, etc.. He knew damn well what he did. Totally classless. I don’t care who he was.
Believe me, I have been that last kid in. It stinks, but you don’t rub it in. You just don’t.
That attitude starts with the rat of a coach and flows downward.
by BurghMountaineer on Apr 4, 2010 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions
See above post
If you guys don’t understand, I’m sorry. But leave the “I hate Duke for everything in the world” bullcrap to UK. That’s why their fans are sad.
Come On
If I never play and I get in the game I’m taking a shot, you can call me classless, but whatever I just hit a three in the Final Four, he’ll graduate and live off that high note for years.
I think Duke is classless, but not for that shot.
by Oregon Mountaineer on Apr 5, 2010 7:39 PM EDT reply actions
agreed, but only if it means something. that shot was about as pointless as trying to block out a 7 footer…specially when he goes over the back to get the board

Think about it oldtimehockey
If the kid NEVER gets to play, any shot he ever takes will be pointless. Why in the world would he be in a relevant game?
I agree that it would mean more if it meant something
that guy wouldn’t be in the game if it meant something. It was pointless to everyone but him and his friends. However, if we were winning big and they put in Cam Payne wouldn’t we all go nuts if he hit a three?
by Oregon Mountaineer on Apr 5, 2010 8:19 PM EDT reply actions
i can honestly say
no. how you win is just as important as getting the win. i know that’s a typical cliche, but the fact is that you dont earn and style points in college bball. and quite honestly you shouldnt in fb either.

Has nothing to do with style
for a 18-22 year old who has maybe had one opportunity to play since November but busted their ass everyday in practice just like all the guys on SI covers that we love to bitch and complain about on this site, I’m not going to fault him for taking a shot in his one chance. Sure being on the losing end I wish he hadn’t done but think about it like this:
I get your point, I just tend to disagree. Duke is classless because they are chippy and then bitch about every call EVER…Like Karl Malone, ask 5YS about how much I hate Karl Malone.
