Da'Sean Butler: Good or Great?

Tonight, Da'Sean Butler and Wellington Smith play their final home game at the Coliseum. While Wellington has had an up and down career, Da'Sean has been a solid contributor from day one. Neither were recruited for Huggins' physical style of play, but both have made the most out their time at WVU, especially Da'Sean.

Da'Sean Butler is currently third on WVU's all-time scoring list, but from what I have seen and heard in recent weeks, many do not consider Butler one of the greatest Mountaineers of all-time.  To me, that is an absurd thought.  While I do not think he is anywhere close to Jerry West, he has to be considered a "great" Mountaineer.  Right?

That leads me to this poll:

Third-leading scorer in WVU history

If that doesn’t qualify a player as a great WVU player, what exactly does “great” mean?

by bicklefischerkane on Mar 1, 2010 11:28 AM EST reply actions

Love the guy and he is great at many things...

but consistency is the Key. You never know what you are going to get… 25pts and 8rebs or 11 pts and 5tos.

Very good with the potential (hope he gets there) to be great.

Columbo? Columbo?

Let’s hear why he is only a mediocre to good player…..

Besides the 3rd leading scorer thing

isn’t he also the Iron Man? I mean, he hasn’t missed a game in his whole four years, right?

I am pretty sure you are correct.

The one game he was supposed to miss he scored 43 points.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

He is a great player

In his first game he scored 11 points.

In his first Big East game he scored 16 against UConn.

He was a good player at the start and developed into a great scorer.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Obviously a lot students are voting no because...

judging by their attendance at recent basketball games, they do not appreciate great basketball.

This is a toughy, but I think he is good. To be great, you need to be a more consistent. With “great” players, you know what you are going to get every night. With Da’Sean, I never know what to expect. I don’t ever question this kid’s effort or will to win, but we are talking about greatness, that is tough to achieve. That being said, I would take this kid on my team every night of the week.

To be great

He has to lead the team far into this years tournament. Overall he has been pretty good but recently has sputtered when it comes to FT’s and performing in big games when it matters most. To me he can’t be Great until he leads the team deep into the tournament and starts hitting clutch shots when we need it most.

People are letting the last 3 games influence their overall opinion

He has had a GREAT career. His scoring average has been 10, 13, 17 and 17 in his 4 years. That is good.

Don’t let these last few games influence your opinion so much.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

I say Great

Top 3 scoring all time. Got to be great to get up on that list. That means you have to play and be consistent on your scoring.

Great players lead, and great players bounce back. He’s had a tough stretch, and it’s a shame it’s happening now, when we needed him. But he’s hit some memorable shots, made some big time plays, and he’s been the obvious leader the other players look up to.

Da’Sean will bounce back and post some top notch numbers in the BET and NCAA’s.

I hope so

He is 20 in school history in career scoring average.

Over the last 20 years, I’d put him only behind Pittsnoggle. And I’d say Gansey and Damian Owens are the only other players that could be considered close.

I can undertand the argument for good...

one can certainly be made that he is only good…But I am going to say great…a final four appearance would solidify great in my opinion

Butler

has been a very good Mountaineer but he’s not great. He has been incredibly consistent since his arrival as a freshman and he has certainly been a vital part of the success in the resurgence of WVU basketball since the departure of Gale Catlett. I don’t need statistics when arguing this point, because those usually don’t separate the games he plays against the upper eschelon BEAST teams and the Depauls, Rutgers, USF’s, etc. Of course he’s going to have the best stats because he’s easily our best scorer. However, I’d take Mike Gansey, Pittsnoggle or Damian Owens in the same area as I would Butler.

He is GREAT relative to WVU basketball standards.
He is GOOD relative to college basketball standards.

In my opinion, we’ve only had 1 great b-ball player…….Zeke (and Brent Solheim)

Not even Hot Rod, or Rod Thorn?

Yikes, you have high standards.

He’s not at the level of West, that’s for sure.

Greats recognise each other.

I doubt Gansy or Pittsnoggle would consider Butler anything less than great. Great people, athletes or not, recognise each other.

Thanks Columbo...

i knew you wouldn’t let me down. pretty good agrument.

so you ARE saying he is GREAT! because we ARE talking about WV B-ball.

and yes, i used to hold it down at the Shell building….

I agree but you really cannot just give a compliment.

Anytime you say something good, you then hedge by knocking that person down a notch. He is was a great Mountaineer but not great all time college player.

Do you do that in your everyday life?

Honey, that dinner was good but Tyler Florence makes way better fried chicken. Kids, that is a good coloring of a house but have you seen the Mona Lisa? Friend, thanks for buying me a beer but Bill Gates bought his friend a brewery.

I’m just messing with you because I agree with your points.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

I voted Great.

And I can see the arguments for merely good. But he’s been so good at so many things over such a long period of time, I think it adds up to greatness. Not to mention his intangibles, which I admit may skew my opinion. But he’s so much fun to watch (minus some of the whining, but I even enjoy that to an extent because I think it’s funny), always playing the game with a smile on his face, always playing hard, always doing the right thing on and off the court. Just a great Mountaineer. Thanks, Da.

GREAT

Kid is breaking all the records. The only guys who have more points are legends. There is no way butler is anything less than great. by far the most skilled player in recent memory.

I think Butler

is a GREAT Mountaineer. I think I was thinking this post was asking if he was great or good in terms of all time college basketball players beyond Mountaineer nation. In that case, of course he would be considered good.
