You are a hypocrite.
Yes, you, the average Smoking Musket reader and author. You come here and write posts that include "Eat Shit Pitt" and "Greg Paulas kissed a boy (and he liked it)". You read a caption over a picture of a man wearing a sheep-fucking costume that says "Average Aubarn Fan" and you laugh. You laugh and write front page articles about how a member of the opposing basketball team beat his girlfriend and an opposing coach had sex. You trash opposing cities, including WVian cities, as dens of fat, crack-addicted prostitutes. You post thousands of pictures of half-naked women. You have bragged on this site about throwing things on the court at a WVU game and hitting a player. You've offended, at least once, literally every person who regularly visits this site.
And now you watch a WVU basketball game and exclaim, "My goodness mother! I believe that the fanbase is out of control! Someone should do something to remind us that manners matter and keep everything above the belt!"
Seriously, this site participates in and encourages the "extreme" wing of a culture that's been out of control for the last 20 years and NOW is going to bitch about obsenities that make the airwaves and shit hitting the court? This place is the tip-of-the-spear for Mountaineer bad behavior on the internet, yet authors of this site are going to act shocked and appalled that an attitude which they've embraced on the internet translates into the real world? Get a fucking grip guys. You've chanted "asshole" at a ref at games before and you'll do it again. You've written/read derogatory things on this site and laughed, and you'll do it again. You're leading the wing of the Mountaineer fanbase that you're so up in arms about.

You're off base
There are lines that should not be crossed and throwing something on the court is well beyond that line. There is a huge difference between adult humor and physically hurting another person.
Get over yourself

Oddly enough, you didn’t get all over Charley for this post a year ago…
Yes, I did that.
A couple things:
1) It was stupid and I should have never done it.
2) It was a nerf ball, completely incapable of hurting anyone. Granted, that still doesn’t make it right.
I really don’t have too much problem with the chants. That’s not going away. But as a reformed “thrower,” I would like to see WVU clean up its act in that regard.

People grow up
He admitted said it was wrong and it was. I have pointed multiple people out, including my friends, for throwing things on the court and toward the field. There is a line you should not cross. It was crossed last night and Charley crossed it too.
Again, get over yourself.

So this was completely unobjectionable 12.5 months ago to the point of advertising it as acceptable, funny behavior. But, today this is a terrible, terrible thing and should be punished by expulsion and banning from future games.
Are you guys trying to turn this place into a Blue and Gold News clone, or is this just a natural progression as we get older?

Good lord, man.
I said it happened. I wasn’t necessarily bragging about it and I certainly wouldn’t do it today.
Last night, after being warned by our coach, some jackass decided to throw something decidedly worse than a soft nerf ball. My act was stupid, last night’s was completely brain dead.
This site is (hopefully) about humor. You say we lead this extreme movement of fans, but we’re trying to do it in a somewhat creative way. Chanting “Fuck You ____________” to every team that walks into the Coliseum is not creative. It’s just dumb. Chanting “Karen Sypher” or “Suck My Dixon” are at least a little more creative. I can appreciate that.

It happened in 2002.
What good would it have done for me to admonish him for something he did so long ago? Right now we can try to affect change by voicing our opinions and maybe coming up with a solution.
I never though you would be so high up in an ivory tower

I’m incredulous that you guys can write this with a straight face. I guess when I read this blog and I see the actions of the fans, I really don’t see the difference in behavior. Obviously I should, because you guys say so.
Incredulous?
You can’t see the difference between a humor website that uses curse words and throwing change onto the court after being warned by our coach not to, costing us a technical foul? Really?
I have to echo the comments of 5th Year when he says to get over yourself. I think that’s the easiest way to put it. We have all fucked up in our day (like I admitted to in 2002), but the whole point of this site is to make fun of the other teams. That’s exactly why I founded it; well, that, and I don’t like message boards. So when we make fun of Greg Paulus or Huntington, that’s what we’re doing. We’re not doing anything destructive.
After all, it’s a fucking website, for crying out loud.

I love your guys site (I liked the older stuff better, but whatever) and don’t think you should change from being on fringe. But, at the same time, I was pointing out that the readers/you guys need to recognize that we’re not exactly being intellectually honest when we engage in over-the-top behavior here that doesn’t put the state in a very good light, then come down hard on the fans for their nearly identical behavior. At any rate, I’ll end this here. When I’ve made Charley mad, I know I’ve cross some sort of line…
You can take our word for it OR...
You could use your big boy logic, which I know you learned in school, and see the difference between “humor/words” and “violence.”
It does not seem that hard to me.

amen
WVU doesn’t need this. The programs are good enough to sparkle any way you slice it without stooping to the churlishness. As far as the site, even though I have been given hell on here, I love it. An adult should be able to get past the humor, that while somewhat personal to many(including me), is tasteless and debasing, as I am sure it is intended to be; as well as very well written. A laugh a minute. If they don’t like the blog, go to ESPN where all they do is paint people from our region with a broad evil brush. Of course these incidents are not helping that, but to blame the blog?

You Don't Really Have A Problem...
…with thousands of pictures of half-naked women, do you?
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.
Haha, no I don’t have a problem with anything that goes on in here, it reminds me of my days in the student section. I’m pointing out that we act like savages in here 364 days/year and then today some of us are getting huffy about some “fucks” getting on national television and making change for an elderly man on the court. I’m just saying I like it better when it’s all alcohol-and-hate in here… which it will be when this passes.
The Difference
At least to me, is the forum. This is an internet blog, where readers are free to visit at their leisure. People visit the site expecting to see adult humor, some mild cursing, and half naked women. If you don’t like the content, you don’t have to come. If Charley doesn’t like the things you are posting on here, he can delete them or ban you.
A WVU basketball game, particularly one that is televised, is entirely different. People go/watch for the basketball, and expect to see just that. Those inside the coliseum have no choice but to sit and listen to it. And as for throwing things…well, that completely disrupts the game, costs the team, and potentially endangers those on the court. There’s just no place for that. But the chanting—-like I said, it’s a public forum where people expect to generally be free from that type of behavior.
I could go on, but to me, that’s mainly what distinguishes the two.
