2010 WVU Football Schedule
First, WVUIE gave us another great Hump Day. Then WVU released its 2010 football schedule. Good lord, this has been a hard day for me.
Sat - September 4 Coastal Carolina (Home) -- I wonder how much it would cost to truck in sand in order to have a beach themed tailgate?
Sat - September 11 Marshall (Away) -- We should never have to play the Herd in Huntington. I guess some WVU fans will be forced to buy Marshall season tickets again. I mean, someone has to, considering Herd fans don't.
Sat - September 18 Maryland (Home) -- I'm glad Maryland is back on our schedule. While I do not consider Maryland a "rival," this border battle always produces a great atmosphere and game at Mountaineer Field.
Sat - September 25 LSU (Away) -- This is another series I absolutely love. While we give Pastilong and company a lot of grief, they have scheduled some great non-conference opponents in recent years. I have my poncho ready for the piss balloons that are sure to be thrown at me on my trip to Baton Rouge.
Sat - October 2 Bye -- Always a scary match-up.
Sat - October 9 UNLV (Home) -- Our destruction of the Runnin' Rebels could go a long way in shutting up the critics that think the Mountain West is a better conference overall than the Big East.
Thurs - October 14 USF (Home - ESPN) -- The Big East wanted to play this game on Friday night but the WVU administration fought tooth and nail to prevent that from happening. This the first of three Big East games we play coming off a short week of preparation.
Sat - October 23 Syracuse Home -- Doug Marrone is getting Syracuse back to respectability, but for now, The Schwartzwalder Trophy stays in Morgantown.
Fri - October 29 Connecticut (Away - ESPN2) -- I do not understand why this was not a bye week considering both teams will be coming of Saturday home games and have a bye the following weekend. Hello, Big East, the goal is to showcase a football game where the teams are adequately prepared.
Sat - November 6 Bye -- I really hate their fans.
Sat - November 13 Cincinnati (Home) -- Revenge! To make up for the blown call last season, the Big East has asked me to be the booth replay official for this game. I accepted!
Sat - November 20 Louisville (Away) -- How quickly can Charlie Strong right the ship at Louisville?
Fri - November 26 Pitt (Away - ESPN/ESPN2/ABC) -- We have a short period of time to prepare for our biggest rival. Hell, look at the bright side though, at least we are not traveling back from South Florida West Central Florida.
Sat - December 4 Rutgers (Home - ESPN/ESPN2/ABC) -- Will this be for the de facto Big East Championship?

Piss balloons at LSU!?? I’ve talked to guys who are Ole Miss and Alabama Tide last season – none of them said anything about piss balloons, unless, this is part of the insanity after the stadium announcer calls the sun has set and its "neaux"dark at Tiger Stadium?
It's calmed down a bit in recent years,
but Tiger Stadium is still a damned nuthouse, especially after dark. That’s why the rest of the SEC loves and hates that place.

Take a picture, trick.

Maryland
I agree that Maryland is NOT a rival to WVU. That series has always irritated me. Some in eastern WV will say it’s relevant, but it’s just not. Maryland has a weak tradition, weak fanbase, and compares favorably to other football inferiors such as Virginia, South Carolina, Wake Forest, etc. I am extremely pleased to see that 5YS pointed out this accurate fact. They had a couple good years when that old WVU QB (the lefty) played and Rod was implementing his system at WVU.
The LSU series will be a fun one, but not pleasant, especially next year in LA.
I’m going to bring up a point that may not receive much interest but I’m going to bring it up anyway (like I’ve let that stop me before on this blog).
WVU-PITT should be in September or October (ala Tennessee-Florida), etc. This is EASILY our biggest rival and when the weather is 5-10 degrees it takes a “little” away from the experience, IMO. I would rather see hot WVU co-eds scantily clad w/ derogatory PITT items on their bodies than everyone bundled up and inside prior to kickoff…..The rivalry has been great, but I feel this would kick it up another notch.
Backyard Brawl
I would love for all of our games to be played when the weather is warm and girls are wearing next to nothing but it is impossible. I somewhat agree that it would be a better atmosphere during late September and early October but I like the budding tradition of playing it on Thanksgiving Day or the day after.
I also think the weather has something to do with scheduling this rivalry late in the season. If WVU or Pitt were to play a sub-par Big East team that late when the weather could be bad, the attendance and gate revenue could suffer. Putting a guaranteed sell-out, late in the season, is a smart move business wise.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Maryland
While living in Maryland, and working with several Maryland grads and fans, I came to appreciate the matchup, and deal with the poundings at work for a week after the games during one stretch.
I can say, to many of their fans, and I know a good many, plus people who work for UMD, that they do consider this game to be a rivalry game, and look forward to it on their schedule. They hate the fact that they have to have an ACC rival like UVA or VT. In fact, even though they have not been good lately, the Terps have this sense of being a top ACC school and their only rival would be FSU.
So I am quite glad they are back on the schedule.
As for the Pitt game, I love it being the day after Thanksgiving. I never liked it being played earlier in the season, and in my opinion, i’d prefer it to be a mutual season ender for both schools.

I agree, Burgh.
If we could play Pitt the day after Thanksgiving as the last game for both schools, that would be awesome. To me, there’s just something that says “football” about a late November game between two blue-collar schools. Yes, I love the nice weather and the girls in skimpy clothes. But I also love bundling up, throwing back some whisky, and hunkering down for a grudge match game. Not to mention the great games we’ve had recently. Additionally, a lot of big rivalry games are played around the same time—-OSU/Mich, Army/Navy, Texas/A&M, FSU/Florida. I think it lends credibiltiy to be mentioned in the same breath as those rivalries.
