With a great comeback Saturday against Louisville, the Mountaineers are creeping back towards the top 5. They're in good company, too, as the Big East is once again dominating the college basketball landscape. Suddenly, repeating the three #1 seed feat -- which was ridiculous at the time it happened -- doesn't seem so far-fetched.

Have we ever been #1 in the nation?

with research:

ranked #1 from approx Jan 2 – Feb 10 (11 game dates listed) and finished #1 before losing to Manhattan before the NCAA tournament, in which they finished 2nd to Cal

correction

My father just clarified things for me. The #1 rankings were during the 57-58 season and the loss to Manhattan was in the first round of the NCAA’s. Don Vincent broke his leg during the Southern Conference Tournament which was a factor in the loss.

The 58-59 season they were never ranked above #4 which was very early in the year. That was the year they went on to lose to Cal in the Finals.

Eat Shit Pitt

I am excited. #1 in the nation would still take some work (good teams losing) so for the time being, I will be happy with a smackdown of Pitt Wednesday, after we sign some good recruits!

Let’s Go!!!

Great tidbit...

although rankings in college b-ball are worthless. Very ironic how opposite the meaning of rankings are between f-ball and b-ball…….I would love to see WVU as a #3 seed, let alone a 1 seed this season…..We need a scorer besides Butler.

Congrats on the ranking!

Looks like a WVU/UK final four is possible.(maybe wishful thinking on my part) That would blow the Tr- State area out of the water, especially with local TV showing both teams games.
