The Shotgun/Throwdown: Colonials Hangover (12/8/10) Edition

Weblogo_medium

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions.  We're being brought to you today by Monacle and Mustache Brewery, in remembrance of the 6 year tenure that ended yesterday.

Of course, the big news is Wanny "resigning" getting the axe, so there's lots of fallout from that.  And let's all resolve to hope that Pederson does just as good a job as the last time he hired a football coach.  Back to basketball.  First, let me apologize for not having a game-thread up last night.  My brain is still having trouble making the transition to round-ball and it's schedule.  It seems the fan base as a whole are having the same trouble as the game was again sparsely attended.  A close game at the half turned into the expected blowout after some typical Huggs motivation.  All of the post-game coverage is inside.

If you have any tips, suggestions or requests for content that you think is worth sharing, you can send them to me by email or Twitter and don't forget to "LIKE" the Smoking Musket MAIN PAGE on Facebook (follow this link, then hit "LIKE").  If any of you didn't realize, clicking on "Like" on the individual articles just likes that particular article, but not our main page.  Many thanks to those who "Like" us already.  We are up to 390 now (still a far cry from the 19000+ for our old page, but baby steps people...baby steps).  We're almost to our next goal of 400.  C'mon people, spread the word!!  Your daily dose is after the jump...

In Brian Bennett’s article about Pitt needing to find the right coach with college experience, he mentions Miami and VT dominating the late 90’s and early 2000’s. It always ticks me off how people lump those two together like nobody else was ever any good.

Do you know how many outright Big East titles VT has? ONE! In 1999, with Michael Vick. They shared the title twice (with Miami in 95 and both Miami and Syracuse in 96), and went to the BCS both times. That’s it. Syracuse won the title outright in 97 and 98, and Miami won it outright in 2000-2002, then shared with WVU in 2003. In 2000, VT was 11-1 with a loss at Miami. In 1997, they were 7-5, 5-2 in the BE. In 1998, they were 9-3 (5-2 BE). In 2001-2003, they went 4-3, 4-3, 3-4 in the BE, respectively. Hardly domination. I really wish people would get their facts straight on that issue. Miami dominated the Big East. VT did not.

The Salient Question Might Be...

is Brian Bennett old enough to remember the 90’s?

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.

Two Things....

1) Huggy’s comments in the Video of Interest illustrate why he is such a damn good coach…."tired of watching guys not play….too much respect for the game to see it not played right….the 6,634 who showed up to watch deserve better (nice dig at the weak crowd, by the way).

2) Sandra Valencia: Wow.

Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.
