The Shotgun/Throwdown: Wednesday (12/15/10) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Samuel Adams Old Fezziwig Ale.
So much for finals week being slow on the news front. The first national media is acknowledging the latest, but they're just saying that it is being reported elsewhere. MSNsportsNet will be among last to confirm the news, I can basically promise you that. There's still some other football features and interviews inside as well.
If you have any tips, suggestions or requests for content that you think is worth sharing, you can send them to me by email or Twitter and don't forget to "LIKE" the Smoking Musket MAIN PAGE on Facebook (follow this link, then hit "LIKE"). If any of you didn't realize, clicking on "Like" on the individual articles just likes that particular article, but not our main page. Many thanks to those who "Like" us already. We now stand at 489. We're still a long way from the 19000+ for our old page, but we're working on it. Our next goal is 500. Spread the word and see if we can get there by the end of 2010!! We can do it, but we need your help. Unfortunately, some sad news leads us off. Your morning dose is on the other side...

Great Find On That Video, Hootie...
I saw it in the thread the other day, but didn’t watch it until now. I like what he says, as well. He oozes competence. I am sold. I like the hire.
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

“I don’t care about passing yards, or total yards, or anything like that. It’s about production, it’s about getting first downs, it’s about taking care of the football, just doing our best to try and move the ball…”
Rhythm, baby. Rhythm.

Wait, didn't Mullen say those same things?
He just sucked at doing it.

True....
But he said them in a T-1000 tone, which means he was really just looking for Sarah Connor, not trying to matriculate the ball down the field.

I knew there was something fishy about that guy.
And guess who you can credit for starting that comparison, by the way?

Hasta la vista, baby.

Bob Hertzel's Article is Ridiculous!
“He took on a can’t-win situation, facing mighty Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, and won. It was not just a victory, it was the biggest, most uplifting victory in the school’s history.”
Can’t win situation? OMG. This guy has no clue.

Has Stew done anything, other than leaving, that you are happy about?
Why is it so hard to give credit where credit is due?
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

I will say, that with all of my excitement of a new direction, I can’t help but feel sorry for Stewart the man, as I would feel sorry for any man losing their dream job. I can’t help but say, while he was not a great coach, he was not a horrible coach. He was better than Greg Robinson and Steve Kragthorpe and countless other head coaches that are worthless. But he didn’t dare to be great. He tied himself to Jeff Mullen and put his personal loyalties ahead of his duty to do what is best for WVU, and is thus reeping the consequences.
After consultation with Stiles, I retract the above statement. He has made more money the last three years than I will make in my life time. He hit the power ball. I do not feel sorry for Stewart, in fact, “Yes, he deserves to be fired, and I hope he burns in hell!!!!”
Ummm you're wrong...
Yes he did win the Big East, technically. You cannot debate that fact. He won the Big East, it is not debatable.

It wasn't a "can't win," but it was a horrible set of circumstances.
It was the most uplifting win in WVU history.
We had a great team without a head coach, coming off the worst loss in Mountaineer history. In the past, many teams in that situation folded and didn’t show up in the bowl game. We performed well because of Stew’s fatherly leadership. We won because of Stew and the coaches that stuck around.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Loved the Fiesta Bowl. Wasn’t as uplifting as the Sugar Bowl, to me. They were bookend on an era of greatness. After the sugar bowl, you realized we were legit. We had an incredible offense dominated by underclassmen and the future looked bright. While the Fiesta Bowl was offese, it was still a period of uncertainty and was more of a one last hurrah than the begining or continuation of something special and it further drove home the point that we could have won the title.
I remember walking out of the Georgia Dome thinking anything was possible.
I remember walking out of U. of Phoenix stadium hoping they wouldn’t screw it up.
They did.
I blame Jeff Mullen
How in God’s name he is being pursued by Kent State I will never know

I'm not saying greatest
I’m saying most uplifting. We were all hurting after Fraud pissed in our Wheaties and this team brought back Mountaineer pride.
IMO

It is my firm opinion that we won the 08 Fiesta Bowl...
because Calvin McGee game-planned the offense and Jeff Casteekl made all the right adjustments on defense. Stewart may have been the glue that held everybody together, but that win was McGee’s.

Stew Kept That Team From Folding...
Give credit where it is due, and consider Cincy’s performance when they lost Kelly in comparison. That kind of failure is what most expected of WVU against OK.

Thought...
came back and showed to Holgorsen interview to my brother, who remarked, almost instantly: “Is this guy a half-brother to William Hurt?” I thought that was hilarious.

Thankfully
Mickey Furfari is saying what needs to be said! Luck’s intent may be correct, but it has been handled poorly.
Luck asked Stewart to replace his OC, which had to be done. Stewart refused. Luck did it for him. How is that wrong? He could have just fired Stewart for being insubordinate, instead he’s letting Stewart stay on for another year.
I didn’t gather that he was asked to replace him first. I agree Mullen needed to be replaced, and if Stew refused then I guess it becomes justified. It just feels disrespectful to me.
why because luck is stewart’s boss…
according to the one article, luck, as is his right, asked for changes. stewart suggested one thing. luck didn’t agree with it. thus being the boss, luck moved forward with the plan.
it wasn’t personal, it was strictly business.
Yeah I didn't get the other options part either.
But ask any coach how they would feel about the AD telling them who to have on their staff and I’m fairly confident nobody is going to like it.
