The Shotgun/Throwdown: Wednesday (11/24/10) Edition
Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown, WVU's nationally recognized best place for sports links, information, sophomoric humor and daily distractions. We're being brought to you today by Bateman's Summer Swallow Ale, because Pitt doesn't merely suck, they...
I really don't have any commentary to follow that intro, so... If you have any tips, suggestions or requests for content that you think is worth sharing, you can send them to me by email or Twitter and don't forget to "LIKE" the Smoking Musket MAIN PAGE on Facebook (follow this link, then hit "LIKE"). If any of you don't realize, clicking on "Like" on the individual articles just likes that article, but not our main page. Many thanks to those who "Like" us already. We're at 339 right now (far cry from the 19000+ for our old page, but baby steps people...baby steps). Our next goal to get to 400. C'mon people, spread the word!!
Note: No S/T tomorrow, but it'll be back in full force for game-day on Friday
Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels to everyone!! It's go time for the jump...

The reason that the Steelers have grass instead of turf
is the players don’t want turf, its hard on your knees. The reason it turns into glorified dirt at this point in the season is because Pitt plays there, the Steelers play there and about this time is the WPIAL Championship.
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

The MNF game in 2007 against the Dolphins
they replaced the sod after the WPIAL Championships and Pitt game, now they got unlucky when a monsoon game through Pittsburgh in time for that game but it still would have been tough sledding in that game because the grass didn’t have time to get roots down to make it a good surface to play on.

Turf isn't going to fix it
you still have to deal with the winds that come through the stadium due to the open end.

Every year it is a problem.
EVERY YEAR. It is a horrible playing surface and something needs to be done. Growing the grass high to slow down a team is one thing, but having a horrible playing surface every year in November is horrible. I hate everything Pittsburgh.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

+1,000,000,000
Literally my high school at better grass on their field than Heinz field. They played about a million games a year on it. It WAS Texas though. I can’t expect people who are used to working with dead things like steel to understand how to deal with living things like grass. I think Heinz field is the most grass in the city limits of Pittsburgh. Get a park or something. Dang Pittsburgh is like a bigger, dirty version of Huntington.

Evidently you've never been to Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh is rated Forbes #1 “Most Livable City”. That’s #1. Your views are very 1985. At that time, you’d be right on w/ your comments. Pittsburgh is simply an awesome city w/ great cultural differences merging Eastern European/Western European influences. The city is so clean now, has green spaces EVERYWHERE and is one of the growing national centers in terms of banking, health (UPMC medical system WILL be the premier medical system in the US……already better than Cleveland and gaining on Minneapolis (Mayo)). Oh and btw, it’s pretty much the City of Champs with 12 pro sports Champs in the last 50 years.
Your comments are ignorant and unjustified. And another thing, many WVU fans are from that area and would undoubtedly agree w/ me.
The only thing that ISN’T Pittsburgh is that dump out in Oakland.
"dump out in Oakland" (suburb)
meaning PITT
I'm giving Oregon a pass on this one.
Some things, such as arguments about our coaching staff, should be backed up by facts. Talking smack about Pitt is not one of those things. If you want to tell a Pitt fan that over the last 17 years, we have outscored them 1,312 to 6, have at it. Ditto about any and all comments comparing the economic and physical health of WV and PA.

I hate to say it but the steelers needed to invest in the field that VT did. It’s sad that a pro teams field is shittier then a D1 university but that is the case. VT grass field, just the field mind you cost over 3 million when they put it in. Why you may ask, because it has drainage built in under it, it also has fans that blow UNDER the field and keep it at a constant 70F, If they insist on keeping grass then need to call the assclowns in blacksburg.
