Around SBN: The Pros and Cons of an 18-game NFL Schedule

Markeith Ambles, the highly touted receiver currently verbally "committed" to Tennessee, has been reportedly looking around for a new school. West Virginia has been widely rumored to be one of the main schools he's looking towards.

So, using only my decoder ring and Oujia Board, I deduced that Kiffin leaving Knoxville might help the Mountaineers in this recruiting battle. If my sleuth skills are wrong, blame old man Withers from the amusement park.

The WR corps could be disgusting...

If McCartney commits, like many believe he will, and we do somehow manage to pry away Ambles, the group of WR suiting up for WVU in the future could be unbelievable.

Heastie, Long, McCartney, Ambles, Bailey, Millines, Pickett, Austin (if he stays at slot), etc…

That’s a TON of talent at one position.

I know, I know….counting chickens before they hatch and all…but a guy can dream.

Agreed.

If we can just get the hang of pass-blocking, we might really have something.

by Dr. Charley West on Jan 12, 2010 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, and agreed.

Also, Michaelee Harris (current Louisville verbal), Kadron Boone (current Texas Tech verbal), and Adrian Coxson (former PSU verbal) are all slated to visit before signing day. I vote we scrap pass blocking and just run that A-11 offense where every player is a potentially eligible receiver before the snap.

It would be nice to see some of this talent spill over to the OL and DL though.

At what point do you turn away a commit?

Obviously, not every single one of these receivers is going to commit to WVU, if any at all, but it raises the question, “Does the staff turn someone away?”

Right now the current class sits somewhere between 22 and 19, depending on whether or not Finau, Irvin, and Long become enrolled, thus counting towards last year’s class and giving WVU more scholarships to work with. Long appears to be there and good to go, but Irvin and Finau (shocking) are up in the air at this point. So, as I type this, we technically have 4 available scholarships without going into greyshirts and all that jazz…

What if 4 of any of the mentioned receivers wanted to commit. What do you do? Take them all? I mean, it’s pretty damn hard to turn down talent especially 4 and 5 star talent like all of those guys….but at the same time there is still positions of need out there. CB, DL come to mind almost immediately. It’s a good problem to have…just interesting to see what happens from now til signing day.

Logan Heastie was the #1 WR on Scout for much of last year, before settling down to a 4 star and #8. He enrolled early – meaning he participated in winter workouts, spring practice, summer workouts, and fall camp. Yet he still took a redshirt. If he wasn’t able to at least work his way into the rotation with Arlric Arnett and Brad Starks, I think you have to seriously question how good he really is/can be or how well he has been coached/developed.

Good points

But you’re selling Arnett and Starks a little short…they’re plenty serviceable. Not great, but not far from the opposite end of the spectrum as well. I’m not willing to write off Heastie without seeing the field yet. He may not be the stud we thought he was going to be, especially with the talent the staff has been able to recruit at WR since Heastie’s commitment, but I fully expect him to contribute.

With turmoil elsewhere...

WVU could land a couple quality recruits.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Phillip Sims

He decommitted from Bama because of Kiffin and TN. Maybe now we can swoop in and grab him. Offer him a shot at QB and tell him if he out plays Geno and Barry, that he can have it. If not, tell him we can move him elsewhere.. maybe into the secondary where we could use some help. Doesn’t look we will NEED him at WR at least.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 13, 2010 1:32 AM EST reply actions

Doubtful.

Remember, we have another top QB in Jeremy Johnson slated to enter. I would think it tough we take 3 in that position.

by Dr. Charley West on Jan 13, 2010 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

Ya, I agree

but I haven’t seen a single website or publication that has Johnson staying at QB. I was under impression we recruited him with plans of moving him elsewhere, once again hopefully in the secondary.

Plus, there is no way you pass up someone like Sims.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 13, 2010 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

You're getting your Sims's mixed up

Blake Sims reopened his recruiting. He will not play QB in college. Phillip is still locked in with the Tide.

by couchburner on Jan 13, 2010 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

But point taken

It would be hard to pass up on a guy that talented

by couchburner on Jan 13, 2010 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

You're correct

I got the name wrong, but the player (player as in physical ability) correct. I was thinking about the guys (Blake) who is more of an athlete than QB.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jan 13, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

It would be great

to add Markeith to our list. Isn’t he taking a visit sometime soon. But if we picked 2 of the top 10 receivers in the country in Ambles and Mcartney, that would be sweet. Ambles played pretty good in the Army bowl making that huge catch early, and Mcartney scoring late on a pass.

by ShadyMountaineer on Jan 13, 2010 9:11 AM EST reply actions

The latest?

Has anyone heard the latest on Noel Devine or Jock Saunders if they are coming back next year? Are we going to give Trickett a chance to come back? That would major if we could get Ambles and Mcartney along with Heastie, and Long. Devine back, Saunders, Smith, Or Brunetti as Qb.

WR Adrian Coxson

How good is this kid? Heard that he Decommited from Penn State.

by WVUDIEHARD1976 on Jan 13, 2010 12:53 PM EST reply actions

he's got 5 stars and ranked #9 WR on Scout

offers from UF, UGA, Cinci, Pitt, ND and us (that are listed)…I’d say he’s pretty good

by WVUIE97 on Jan 13, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Rumors?

Who is the leading role to fill Doc’s job? and the position that Sider had?

by WVUDIEHARD1976 on Jan 13, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

nothing new on that front, that I'm aware of

Pat Kirkland, longtime GA, is always mentioned. If I had to guess, Stew did some looking around at the coaches conference and is still weighing his options, although right now is probably neck deep in the recruiting with all of the de-committing happening around the country with the coaching changes everywhere.

by WVUIE97 on Jan 13, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

JaJuan Sieder

His position is likely to be filled by Rasheed Marshall who also has connections in Florida.

I had heard nothing solid on Doc’s position.

Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

JaJuan Sieder

May I ask why in the heck Rasheed Marshall? Isn’t Pat Kirkland mention before?
