TSM Coaching Approval O'Meter (July, 2009)
Yes, I know it's technically August. Deal with it.
A new feature this season/year at The Smoking Musket will be a coaching approval poll, giving us a better understanding of just how strongly WVU fans feel about the job being done by the coaches. This poll will ask one single question: "do you approve of the job currently being done by Coach Bill Stewart and staff?" This question will be posed today, just as it was early this summer on June 15th, and then after August and following each football game this season. We'll track the results, and hopefully, reach both enlightenment and total conciousness. Which is nice.
PS: The approval rating image above is scaled down to fit on the page. By clicking on it, you'll reveal a lot more detail.
So, without further ado, here we go:

No surprise here.
With recruiting really buzzing and us having not lost any games yet, I fully expected it to be over 90%. It will be interesting to see if we only beat Liberty by three touchdowns, what happens then.
I really wish I could do this during the actual game, like a focus group does with a TV show or CNN does during presidential debates. Run on 3rd and 4? 35% approval. Throw on first down? 90% approval.

94% Great
How can you not approve of the job being done by this coaching staff in the offseason? They secured a great recruiting class and have already add some solid names to next years list.
I would say that is pretty dang good.

How you could disapprove....
If you only care about wins and losses and not about hype or how many passes are thrown per game, then the only thing you can base your vote on is a disappointing 2008 campaign.
Fire Urban Meyer!!
If wins and losses are all that mattered, than Meyer should have been on the hot seat after 2007. I mean, they ONLY won 9 games with the freakin heisman trophy winner and a lot of the starters back from the 06 title team! Hell, they got embarassed in their bowl by a Big Ten team who was getting rid of their coach.
In the SEC East.
Losses that year were to Auburn, LSU, Georgia, and Michigan. We lost to ECU, Colorado, Cincinnati, and Pitt.
Not exactly apples to apples.

Well seing as Urban Meyer won more games his first year than Ron Zook had the previous 3, followed by a national championship season, in addition to winning huge at both Bowling Green and Utah before that, gives him a little leeway, in that he had already improved the team his first two seasons and had a stellar track record.
Bill Stewart won fewer games than Rich Rodriguez had the previous 3 years, has never won a title, has little head coaching experience and was unsuccessful before being fired in the little experience he has, makes the comparison a little ridiculous.
That’s like saying why wasn’t Pat White booed when he threw 2 picks against Cincy, when Brad Lewis was booed for throwing mere incompletions.
Exactly
I’m just saying that to compare Meyer to Stew is as crazy as evaluating a coach after one year, or even worse, on a game by game basis.

6. I will not make excuses for Bill Stewart.
He seems like a really nice guy. He really does. You know who else seemed like a really nice guy? Greg Robinson. Nice guys don’t finish first in college football. Nice guys end up being someone else’s defensive coordinator. You should be fearing for Bill right now, not propping him up.
He’s got a tough schedule, no Pat White and…no Pat White. And did I mention he almost got out-coached by Greg Robinson last season? YIKES!
Nice is bad?
Pete Carroll is nice. He doew OK Jim Tressel can out dork anyone. He does OK. Also- as far as off the field stuff, there was nobody softer than RichRod. As long as you made bail, you played.
We do have a tough schedule, and I knew that sooner or later Pat White would graduate, but I think we’ll be OK.
The thing is, everyone on this board, me included, is mostly clueless about how the season will turn out. Who knows- maybe Jarret brown will be the real deal. I remember watching hearing how great Greg Jones was gonna be the year after Major left, and he sucked. But I also remember watching a young Marc Bulger mop up for Chad Johnston and thinking, this guy sucks, I hope we recruit someone better by next year. Bulger turned out pretty good.
We really are guessing because we aren’t inside the program, so why not hope for the best?
Exactly! Why Not Hope For The Best?
I think the perception that HCBS is a nice guy is mostly fluff, anyway. People see that awshucks hokum and think he is a pushover, and I don’t know if that is an accurate portrayal, because, as you said, South, none of us is inside the program. I think the kids respect him, which is the most vital thing at this level, and, I think he is one helluva recruiter. I am sure the rebuttal to this will be that his staff did the recruiting….which, to me is no rebuttal at all, since it is HIS staff…and he was the lead recruiter of Pat White, anyway…so he’s got some knack for it (remember, we weren’t just competing for Pat with other schools, but baseball as well…)
I wonder if the six-foot, coal-black seam of Appalachian fatalism that runs through our fan base might just have an aversion to awshucks hokum types (ironic, if true, don’t you think?). I am pretty sure if you took the names off of some quotes from both HCBS and Bobby Bowden and lined them up side-by-side, it would be hard to tell who said what. Oh, wait…we ran Bowden out of town on a rail, too…so he could go build a winner in the swampy climes of Florida
By the way, you crack me up: “As long as you made bail, you played…” Priceless.
Bill Stewart was not the lead recruiter for Pat White, Rick Trickett was. Stewart recruited Virginia, not Alabama.
Ha!
Just noticed that. I will fix, and your comment will then look stoopid.

Rating System
Can there be more options? I feel like ‘yes’ – ‘no’ are too vague. I’ll tell you why. I don’t approve of Coach Stewart on the football field. However, on the surface it appears to me that the coaching staff is doing a good recruiting job. That’s terrific. One problem. Recruiting isn’t everything.
So to recap. Off the field, I suppose, I approve. On the field, not so much. Especially after they score 3 points against East Carolina again.
Give me more options, Dr. West.

What a swing
From safely over 90% down to 76%. I’m a little surprised. I thought we’d beat June’s numbers, considering the recruiting.
