Is it a problem that West Virginia already has a rival in place (Pitt)? That game, called the Backyard Brawl, might detract from Terps-Mountaineers just a bit. Maybe Maryland-West Virginia can be the "side yard brawl."

When Scotty McBrien was at Maryland, this may have been somewhat true. But now? Not even close. Maryland is so, so, so far behind Pitt as a rival, it's really unfair to even put them in the same category.

It will take many years

and a lot of great games for a good rivalry to start up with any teams other than Pitt and VT….if we started playing VT again i think it would be heated from the first rematch

Let's make it worth something

If we played for let’s say a slab of friedgen’s backfat or future rights to any additional slaton family members or something. Nobody fears the turtle and wvu has made this one pretty one sided. So unless the turtle gets good and wins a few this is another eastern washington game.

Have you ever seen Mike Tomlin and Omar Epps in the same place at the same time?

I'm Pretty Sure

We hold a 2-game edge in what has historically been a pretty even series. We just had the pleasure of waxing them the last 4 times we played. I think before that, they had won 4 or 5 straight against us. If we rattle off another 6 or 7 in a row, then maybe I’ll consider them “another eastern washington.”

Completely agree!!!

Even when Maryland pummelled us those few times in a short span, I distinctly remember YAWNING when we played them in the bowl game. I didn’t care if we won or lost, because it was an uninteresting Maryland team. I think Ed Pastilong is the only person who thinks there’s something there, because we’ve had them on the schedule since 1900, it seems……….There are two teams in college football that when I flip on the TV and see playing, I immediately turn the channel………Maryland and Virginia…….when I see it, it’s time to paint the garage.

For A While I Felt That Pitt/VT-Hatred Toward The Terps

I don’t know…the last few results notwithstanding, I remember feeling like 2004’s 19-16 OT win was a breakthrough for The Artist Formerly Known as Coach Rod, because up to that point the Terps had our number. I deeply cared about winning that game…it felt like a rivalry to me then! Perhaps I feel that way since I had attended the 33-0 ass-whoopin’ they gave us in College Park in ‘99, the 48-17 ass-whoopin’ at home in ’02, and both ass-whoopins in 2003. It seemed like forever since I had seen us beat them!

Over here

on the Eastern Panhandle, many feel that same hatred toward Maryland as we do for Pitt. Many of us work in Maryland or work with Marylanders and are constantly inundated with Maryland rhetoric (talk about unbearable when the BB team won the national title). My preacher is a native Marylander and we even have to listen to it from him.

Something else that we have to endure is that we’re in the DC tv broadcast zone and if the national game is a WVU game, but Maryland or VA is playing at the same time….guess what’s on our channels (granted that’s gotten better with the proliferation of cable/satellite). I’m not saying it’ll ever match Pitt in terms of rivalry, but over here at least, the hatred is there.

Eastern Panhandle

I have folks that live in Hedgesville and I understand what you mean by the whole Twerp mess. I still get the same satisfaction from beating their asses as I would with Pitt or VT, so its still quite a rivalry I would say. In addition, I know quite a few students who hail from the EP as well as DC, NoVA, and MD in which beating Maryland does give the same satisfaction as well. It feels pretty good to visit the Hagerstown and Martinsburg malls knowing we have consecutive wins against the twerps. I can’t help but wanna laugh inside each time I see “Fear the Turtle”.
