The New York Yankees select Patrick White, quarterback center fielder, West Virginia University.

On one hand, it makes sense for the "greatest winner in college football today" to be drafted by the winningest professional sports franchise in United States history. On the other hand, WTF?!? You would think that after watching the Angels (twice) and Reds waste picks on him only to be spurned for football, the Yankees would have learned their lesson. Then again, it's the Yankees, and they never learn their lesson.

On a side note, congrats to Tobias Streich and Vince Belnome, who were drafted by the Twins and Padres, respectively.

haha, i love it. if things dont work out in miami i would love to see him play baseball. but it will be at least 2 years down the road. look for him to drafted a 5th time and then a 6th if he doesn’t get much PT.

when you get this far down in the baseball draft it’s all just a crap shoot anyway. it’s why the red sox just drafted carl yaztremski’s grandson and why the Dodgers drafted a catcher who was the son of one of tommy lasorda’s friends as a favor in the 62nd round of the 1988 draft named mike piazza.

Pat White was also drafted in the NHL and MLS drafts. He is the man.

I would think...

after 1400 picks….you’d pretty much be drafting anyone you could at that point.

On one hand

I agree that late in the draft, teams are taking fliers on players who most likely won’t make it. But on the other hand, if you’re going to take a risk, why not make it a calculated risk? It’s not like Piazza was some random physics major who had never swung a bat before. He obviously had some kind of ability. I can’t speak for Yaz’s grandson, but I’m guessing he wasn’t riding the pine at Alderson Broaddus for the last four years. Basically, by making this pick the Yankees are saying that Pat will be done with professional football before next year’s draft. As The 25314 said, that’s not likely. So to me, at least “waste” a pick on someone who might actually see the field this year. Like me, for instance.
