It's Mountaineer Pride...From The Heart
I saw the new WVU "Recruiting Video" yesterday evening at the WVU v. Kentucky baseball game and it got me pumped up for the 2009 season. Since that video has not been released to the public, here is HCBS Fiesta Bowl pre-game speech that still gets me pumped up.

How do I say this?
I have played sports my entire life. And no one has ever had to give me a speech in the locker room or a pep talk on the field.
If you are a winnner you understand the gravity of the situation every time you take the the field/court. Winners win, period. Losers make excuses, period!!!
I once played with a baseball player who would kick the bats every time we were not hitting. We finally told him that if you do that again we will ALL kick your ass.
Winners WIN, and hitters HIT!!!!
It’s just that simple.
I was a "good" baseball player...
but when I was in a hitting slump I would put my driver’s head cover on my bat. “Hats for bats, keep bats warm…” You’re right that winners win but if don’t do everything you can to get out of a slump or losing streak, then you are not trying hard enough.
I agree that pre-game speeches are a little over-rated because players should be ready to play.

You’re lucky that you were able to self-motivate. Not everyone is like that. Now, I never played football, but from my experience playing sports, different players needed different things to prepare for a game—-and pregame speeches are, as far as I can tell, a fairly common ritual in football. When I played baseball, I noticed that some players would listen to music, others would take extra time warming up, a few just goof edaround, and some needed a coach to get in their ear and focus them on the game. It doesn’t make you any better or worse, just different. Maybe the guys would have played the same without any rhetoric like that, but it certainly didn’t hurt. As for me, whenever I hear a speech like that, I get a little fired up.

I agree with you to a certain extent.
Everyone uses different things to get them going for games. And like you have said before you never what happened to a player before the game to effect their mental preparation, i.e. girlfriend problems, thinking about the NFL, etc.
Pre-game speeches could give that extra little push to really get the player pumped to play. However, I think they are overrated players should be up for every game.

Really????
you’re still perseverating over that pre-game speech 2 years ago? I love the part when he talks about “never leaving your wingman!!!”…..taken verbatim, from Top Gun. I’m w/ the school that feels that pregame chitchat is just that, although I can see where underclassmen may not be mature enough to be mentally prepared/focused on his specific role.
I also wanted to respond to a post from a while back. It was referring to the question of BACKUP QB for WVU. Let’s rephrase that question and ask what are we going to do at STARTING QB. I don’t care about experience….it’s overrated (just ask Patrick White at WVU and Terrelle Pryor at OSU)….Bill Stewart sure does talk alot during his pressers and I think I heard where he already named Brown the starting QB???? He is slow of feet and release and I would think that you can’t rule out the possibility of Smith, even though he’ll only have 2-3 months for prep. At any rate, this will be our worst season in a long time and a return to the Charlotte Bowl would be considered a success.
Wrong again
99% of QB’s we have from this point forward will be slower than Patrick White. Tim Tebow is slower than Patrick White and he does a pretty good job running the ball. I’m not going to compare Brown to Tebow but just pointing out the fact that you don’t have to run a 4.4 to be a successful running QB.
1. Of course HCBS named Brow our starting QB, Mr. Smith is not enrolled at WVU yet. How could he be the starter this spring? HCBS has always said that every position is open to competition every day at practice. If Mr. Smith comes in this summer and plays better than Brown he should be the starter. By the way, I thought you didn’t believe in all the hype surrounding recruits?
2. How can you already be critical of Jarrett Brown? He is 2-0 as a starter and could hardly lift his arm above his shoulder in one of those starts. I don’t know what games you were watching but Brown has a stronger arm and better touch than White. The release is not any slower than Whites and Brown has more weight to throw around in short yardage situations. Brown is by no means “slow of feet” he played basketball and even Huggs said he had the quickest first step on the team.
What Brown needs to really prove is that he has the heart and leadership abilities of Patrick White. That is a big question coming into the spring.
3. White did not start until the middle of his redshirt freshmen season. He had some experience. Pryor is an athletic freak of nature and did not start until a few games into his first year.

Who cares...
if he used a line from a movie? BTW, it is not verbatim from Top Gun. He did a good job of working it into his pre-game speech.
Just admit that there is nothing HCBS could do to make you happy.

Live From Columbus
…and there we have it….the first hints of negativity arriving with the beginning of spring. The awful, bowl-bound season will be here and gone, before you know it!
perseverating?
Does anyone else find it ironic that WVU columbus used a word derived from perseveration? In the study of pshychiatry it means the persistant, pathological repetition of a word, gesture, or act. I do believe it could be applied to his never ending criticism of HCBS. We were all disappointed with last season, but give it a rest won’t you?
I made one comment.......
and it’s responded w/ 5 posts. This blog should send me a X-mas card.
Jarrett Brown is an average to slightly below average BEAST QB.
Our O-LINE is young, has some experience AND talent, but will probably not perform to expectations thanks to this tool Dave Johnson
Our WRs don’t exist.
Our RBs (unless we have Jock Sanders back) aren’t very good.
Our linebackers will be a bright spot.
Our special teams will be atrocious
Our D-line will ineffective as always. Have we had a pass rusher since Canute in ’97 or Big John Browning.
Our secondary will be pretty good.
Our coaching is the worst in the conference.
Prediction: 5-7. We will then have another subpar year the following year and Bill Stewart will thankfully be fired and replaced w/ 5th Year Senior, who would perform a much better job.
Do any of you know when Midnight Madness is next fall? BTW, this will be the final year at WVU for Devin Ebanks….and look for Kevin Jones to breakout next season….Huggs has these guys on track and a great signing of the JUCO shooter too.
I know that many of you think I'm pessimistic, but.....
you’re wrong……I REALLY DO think this is going to be the outcome next fall…..That makes me realistic, in my opine. I usually don’t analyze in a way that incorporates HOPE, OPTIMISM, etc., but instead in terms of looking at the TALENT (MOST IMPORTANTLY) and then the coaching. I would bet that other posters on here like Charley West and 25413 analyze in a comparable manner…………unlike 5YS.
Not realistic...

I've made the decision
to not feed the attention whore with responses anymore, because that’s all he wants
I'll feed it.
Besides it keeps things interesting.

Agreed
There is something to be said for disengaging from people who want the team to fail so they can be right about something. As for the whole realist/pessimist thing…most people I know who self-apply these terms are unhappy, and worse, killjoys. The only time I like to see them is when they are the shooter at the craps table — betting the Don’t Pass becomes incredibly profitable….
