TSM Coaching Approval Meter (Post-Rutgers, 2009)

Big end to the season, as a possible 7-5 disaster was replaced with a 9-3 gift for the holiday season.
Over the past few weeks, we have hashed out this team and coaching staff ad naseum with no real definitive conclusion, so I won't try to give talking points here. I will say, however, that the bandwagon seems to be getting more full. Why? Well, just beating Pitt on a last second FG lifted HCBS's approval rating 33 points, which is easily the biggest one-game jump in meter history. And it should rise again -- but how much?
Remember, after you vote, please explain your reason(s) for that vote in the comments.

voted "approve"
but only just barely. I’m giving the defense kudos with this vote, and the benefit of the doubt that mid-season collapses were injury-related.
Line coach needs to go, and Mullen, well, he needs to get smarter.
Still, they are playing hard and representing well. It could be so much worse.
Better Than Expected
Look at it this way. With the injuries, QB, and new O line this team could have easily went 11-1. Auburn game was destroyed by mishaps and got ripped off @ Cincy.
No. Because I do not approve of the job Bill Stewart is doing.

What could he do to make you vote yes?

Winning, And winning big. playing like a top 15 team. Being feared in the big east and around the country.
It also wouldn’t hurt if he kept his mouth shut, and stopped squinting during night games.

Only one of those things is actually measurable.
Winning and winning big. The other two are based on perception.
When we beat FSU and finish in the top 15 you will say that we did not play “like” a top 15 team.
Being feared? Why is this important? Why not just win football games?
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Marshall Won all it’s games in 1998, were they feared?
We beat Rutgers, did we look like a top 15 team in that game?
College football is all about how you look. It’s based on polls. If you don’t look good it’s generally because you aren’t good and the losses eventually catch up.
by The 25314 on Dec 9, 2009 5:49 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
That is my point.
The goal is not to be feared or look like anything. The goal is to win all of your games. Period. In most years the fact that you win all of your games will put you into the national championship game.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

WV Coach Bill Stewart
Commentating as a Mountaineer for 50 years, Coach Bill Stewart is one of the finest coaches we have ever had or possibly will ever have. We are a University responsible for educating Wet Virginian’s and students from all States and the world. Coach Stewart is an Academic genius, an exceptional football coach and a mentor for our many athletes. His standards excel. I watch on my computer, TV and purchase every sports package possible to enjoy my beloved Mountaineers. We have a winner in coach Stewart. (An unnecessary comment-Coach Rod, the scum bag he is, was the biggest disappointment ever for WVU.)
I think I'm going to like your opinions.

Two questions:
Coach Stewart is … an exceptional football coach
Why is this true?
Coach Rod … was the biggest disappointment ever for WVU.
Why is this true?
by Dr. Charley West on Dec 9, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
Coach Rod
The way he left, His dismal performance at MI-he used WVU-was successful, then walked out. Our staff, administration and fans supported him-that could be a major part of his success at WV. Now at MI without this support look at his record. We West Virginian’s were part of his success and he left us.
Bill Stewart is academic genius.
Why is this true?
I honestly would think this was sarcasm if I didn’t know better.
Does anyone think it’s odd that the only people who think bill Stewart is an amazing coach are people that are huge wvu fans? People with neutral perspectives disagree.
But hey, he loves west Virginia and would never throw the Pitt game like our last coach. I’ll take that over touchdowns anyday.
by The 25314 on Dec 9, 2009 3:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Agree 100% in part.
Does anyone think it’s odd that the only people who think bill Stewart is an amazing coach are people that are huge wvu fans? People with neutral perspectives disagree.
This is absolutely true. Most every other person I have ever met (or read) thinks he’s a joke.
I’m not saying he is, that’s just the perception of him around the conference and country.
by Dr. Charley West on Dec 9, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions
While part of it is his down home demeanor...
WVU fans are also to blame because we constantly bash him.

No we're not.
Dude, he’s an incredibly easy target. It has nothing to do with WVU fans and their opinions.
People around the country saw the squinting and the headset problems and the timeout gaffes live and in living color. They didn’t check WVU message boards to see what we thought before making up their minds.
by Dr. Charley West on Dec 9, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions
It doesn’t take a genius to see that he acts and coaches like a buffoon. Blaming WVU fans for the way the public perceives this guy is ridiculous. He is a joke nationally.
by EatSchmittPitt35 on Dec 9, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions
So explain the recruiting?
Look, I agree that Stew doesn’t exude confidence as a coach. He sometimes looks goofy, he makes odd decisions, and his press conferences are often brow-raising. But at the end of the day, he ends up going 9-3 (which, by the way, is exactly what CFN predicted, and one win away from what I predicted), and is on track to haul in a second top-25 recruiting class. Now, I don’t pretend to know what’s in the minds of 18 year olds these days, but if they see something in him that they believe in that makes them want to be Mountaineers, who am I to question that? Recruiting is the lifeblood of a college football program. Does Pete Carroll win because he’s a great strategical coach, or because he has better players than everyone else? How about OSU? Texas? Oklahoma? If Stew can assemble the greatest collection of talent ever seen in Morgantown, maybe he doesn’t need to be a great gameday coach to succeed. And if that’s what it takes for WVU to be successful, that’s just fine with me.
by Country Roads on Dec 9, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions
So you're saying...
The fact that some WVU fans call him a buffon every chance they get does not hurt his public perception? You just said yesterday that your words are the only sword you have to influence the athletic department and other fans about our team. Now you are saying that what you say does not?
Political example: Sarah Palin after her first speech was articulate, smart and edgy. She makes a slip up in a couple interviews and SNL jumps all over with parodies. If not for the constant jokes and skits, her image would be a lot different. When HCBS is interviewed by a national radio or a local sports show the hosts GUSH about how much they love him. (No views one way or the other, just an example)
I am not saying it is our fault that he looked awkward at times last year. But the fact that we keep bringing it up and calling him a buffon does not help the situation one bit.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Remember back
My graduating chant was "e beat Pitt 17 to 7.
Yes.
We win ugly. But we win. And I think the future is bright.
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,
For there is naught to fear, the gang's all here,
So hail West Virginia, hail.
Yes, Yes a thousand times YES
While I would rather be on a 12 game win streak, we have won back-to-back games against opponents that many did not think we could beat.
Also, being that it is the end of the regular season, I voted yes for a total body of work. We won 8 games last year against lesser opponents. This year we improved to win 9 games, are ranked 16th in the nation and are playing in the Gator Bowl. That is a move in positive direction.
I am shocked that the approval is down from last week. People really do not like Bill Stewart. This is amazing and sad at the same time.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.
In my experience so far...
The approval starts lower and trends higher as the voting goes on. Not sure why, but I think it’s because the people disapprove generally feel stronger about their disapproval than the people who approve feel about their approval.
If I had to guess, the ratio will trend in favor of Bill Stewart as the week goes on.

Egads
I like Bill Stewart fine. He’d be the best uncle or grandfather or neighbor a person could hope for. My nay is unrelated to any of that, except that those qualities appear to be a recruiting asset. Instead, I voted “no” because any situation that requires the WVU head coach to think critically on the spot has terrified me since the Pat White fumble-replay-lambada in Greenville last year. Although Rodriguez is a dick and was not perfect in critical-thinking, fold-check-or-bet scenarios, he is a better poker player than Stewart, and, whereas in days gone by I was confident when WVU had one or more extra weeks to prepare, I currently dread such situations* as opportunities for Stewart to put his thinking cap on.
- Yes, WVU won the Pitt game off a bye week; counter-point: the Wannstache also spent an extra week fitting a thinking cap hisownself. Also, this is only addressing the extra time for strategizing; obviously, it’s nice to give Devine, Neild, and Williams time to heal up when you can, but that’s a topic to be considered when we vote on Trainer Approval during bowl week.

Anyone else think a big test is coming up for Stewart?
How well he handles his first coaches leaving the program? I’d like to see if he can still put together a top quality staff….save for Mullen.
I'm on the fence right now
I can’t argue with 9 wins, Gator Bowl and #16. Overall pretty good results.
But every time I start to think I might be ok with bill he immediately pisses me off and changes my mind.
Is he so insecure that he has to brag endlessly about how good of a job he’s doing? He defends himself at every possible opportunity -often unjustifiably. He rarely admits a mistake instead excusing it as something beyond our understanding.
If he wants us to have confidence in him he needs to have confidence in himself. He needs to be able to admit mistakes and in turn learn from them.
I still contend that Mullen was and is a bad hire.
We are not in the top 25 in any significant statistical category – which makes me question if we are good or just lucky? One thing is certain – we are inconsistent and have been consistently so (oxymoron) for 2 solid years.
Winning is good. It’s what matters most. In that regard I generally approve of the coaching this season. What I see does not give me confidence that it will happen consistently however.
I’m leaning yes but I still have some major concerns. Mullen is a poor OC but a good position coach. Casteel is generally good although I wish more aggressive. Stew has the special teams all over the place – most notably a horrible kickoff coverage unit, but punts and FGs have been great.
by Beamer'sGoiter on Dec 9, 2009 4:32 PM EST via mobile reply actions
It is becoming very clear to me...
That Bill Stewart will never be given a fair chance by many WVU fans. His look will never change and he will continue to fight back in an awkward way, when he feels that he is being unfairly attacked.
Many will say, just win and we will not attack him. He increased his win total from year one to year two, has us ranked 16 in the nation and playing in the Gator Bowl and people are still attacking him. Why? Because he does not pass the “eyeball test.”
You all know I think we can and do need to improve. All I ask is that we stop holding our perception of his down home demeanor against him and instead eyeball test his W-L record. It could be better but he improved from year 1 to year 2 playing a tougher schedule and losing the greatest player in Mountaineer history.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.
Stop calling it his "down home demeanor"
It’s much more than that. At times, he has looked and acted completely clueless on the WVU sideline. Mack Brown has a down home demeanor. So does Lou Holtz (no lisp jokes). But they knew how to coach inside and out. I don’t get that from Stewart…yet.
by Dr. Charley West on Dec 9, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions
Brown?
Ne nearly blew his shot at the national championship based on clock mismanagement. So don’t use him as an example. Les Miles? Ditto, and he actually won a title. They just have more talent than everyone they play, AND got lucky along the way.
by Country Roads on Dec 9, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
You're seriously going to criticize
Mack Brown’s coaching while defending Stew’s?
Les Miles is a little crazy and has caught a lot of crap for his shenanigans. If Stew thinks he catches a lot of crap, he should pull something like Miles did against Colonel Reb & Co.
Stew making stupid decisions and appearing like he has no idea what he’s doing has nothing to do with talent.
by Beamer'sGoiter on Dec 9, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions
So you think Mack browns clock management and play calling against Nebraska was anything more than atrocious? My point is, when you have superior talent, most coaching gaffes can be overcome. I think we have done that on more than one occasion this year, and I hope to do it more in the future with the guys stew is bringing in. But as for my original point, I’m just saying that browns coaching isn’t without fault. Brian Kelly, IMO, would be a better example.
by Country Roads on Dec 10, 2009 9:11 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Honestly
I didn’t watch enough of that game to comment on playcalling. What I did see is Nebraska is top 25 in passing and rushing defense, top ten in total defense and second in scoring defense.
It looked like Mccoy had a bad game – which is rare. Clock management was good from coaching. McCoy just took way too long on play before the field goal. You always keep a TO to set up for a FG in that situation.
Talent wins most games but we will inevitably face a team with either as good/better talent or who is superiorly coached – like Kelly’s UC team.
I don’t think we will ever be a school which can consistently out recruit every team in this conference enough for it alone to keep us winning championships.
Even automatically great recruiting schools have to have the right coach in place (or the residual effects of that coach – see LSU) to be great.

What does his demeanor
have to do with his inability to deal with criticism or refusal to admit a mistake?
Just because you can’t or refuse to see his flaws doesn’t make others discriminatory.
I don’t try to legitimize any criticism of his appearance or his strong tendency to use the same tremendous words and phrases as much as possible. That has nothing to do with coaching.
I sincerely question his own confidence in his decisions and his ability to make decisions in critical situations. I think a big sign of these things are our inconsistency – overall and specifically in critical situations. No matter tbe result he swears up and down it was the right decision. I think he masks his inconfidence with stubborness.

why? because we’re 9-3 and we’re going to the gator bowl. he’s obviously getting the job done at 9-3. some top tier teams wished they could finish the year with that record. let’s be honest we lost at auburn because of JB’s turnovers, we lost to a top ten cinncy because of a bad call by three points(cant solidly say that was the only reason but by getting that turnover it would have changed the momentum of that game greatly) … we held pitt to 16 points when cinncy let them score over 40 … the only game we actually should have lost and deserved to lose was south florida and we got owned.
sure coach stew makes bad judgements to some like going for it on fourth down but when he doesnt there is a range of people that say he should … he has some bad clock management and needs to hire a special teams coach … but other than that he is 17-7 in his first two regular seasons, compiled a great coaching staff thats still intact, brought in one of the best recruiting classes in college ball last year and this year the class is in the top 25 …
and because of his personality … sure he might be “folksy” and use weird quotes, etc but fans around the country respect that and so do the analysts around the nation … i remember one announcer during the rutgers game say “make no mistake, bill stewart is an very good football coach and is getting the job done at west virginia” or something along those lines … i dont really know any other time that an entire football program got a helmet sticker on gameday final like wvu did after uconn (granted the situation set it up for it) but our coaches, players, program and fans came through and represented us greatly …
So lay off of coach stew for christ sakes … if we start of the season next year 0-3 or something then i’ll say he’s not getting the job done but guess what he’s winning …
eyeball test
he is who he is … did kansas fans complain cause their coach was a whale … look at charlie weis … ralph friedgen … clemsons coach looks like the intern guy from the nbc show 30 rock … pete carrol looks like a retired 70’s rocker … dave whinnstate (spelling?) looks like a 80’s porn star … jim levitt makes an ass out of himself every game on the sidelines throwing temper tamtrums … GIVE THE MAN A BREAK … sure he squints his eyes and does weird things with this mouth hell i dont know what i’d do or how my body language would be if i was under the pressure he is …
also we are ranked 16th in the country … don’t think rich rod was rankde after his 2nd year as head coach
the only reason rich rod had such great success at west virginia was because #1 VT, Miami, BC left the conference and Pat White … i think fans got alittle spoiled because of white and other teams sucking …
How quickly we forget being 6-1 in the conference in 2002 and 6-1 and sharing the crown in 2003, the last 2 years tech, and Miami were in conference. It’s and injustice to Quincy, Avon and Rasheed to ignore their great success in the old big east.

Stew is the best coach WVU has had for some time. He does need another two years to prove this to be true, but I think the naysayers, complainers, whiners,cry-babies and all of the other nattering nabobs of negativity will live to regret their pessimism and will meekly accept the thrill of victory when the Mounties are the national champs!! I can’t believe that this team finished with such a good record with an inexperienced QB, new inexperienced OL and lots of freshman and sophmore and rs freshmen and without PW,SS,OS,ect. The play calling was not the problem, it was the execution that faltered. KO coverage was awful and needs to be delegated to another coach. A kicker with a stronger leg wouldn’t hurt either. I just hope that the fans can be satified with gradual improvement and let Stew have a shot with the players of his own recruiting. Stew is learning too—- this is his initiation as a HC of a big time program—-give the man a break. And always remember… “A CRITIC IS LIKE A EUNUCH IN A HAREM….HE KNOWS HOW IT”S DONE..HE’S SEEN IT DONE EVERY DAY..BUT HE UNABLE TO DO IT HIMSELF"
Best coach we have had in some time? Do you mean since the last coach?
Then you say he needs another 2 years to prove this true? So you’re basing the idea of him being the best coach off of what you think/ might/hope will happen in the future?

BEST HEAD COACH IN SOME TIME NOW !
Let me clarify that my belief that HCBS is “the best head coach that WVU has had in some time” is NOT based on my belief that the FUTURE WVU team will be a great team in the next two years (which IS indeed my opinion), rather it is because I think that this year’s team was VERY inexperienced and all the hype and overexpectations for this year’s perfomance overlooked that fact. I remember something my mama told me about counting my chickens before they hatch. HCBS has done an OUTSTANDING job this year given what he had to work with …An OL and D secondary that were as porus as swiss cheese. The players could have given up and mailed it in, but to their credit and especially to HCBS they did not. As for HCBS’s first year, he was stuck with an OL that horribly underperfomed (some said preseason they would be the best OL in the country). This year’s OL (because they are greenhorns) and their position coach should be given one more year to right the ship. HCBS and the other coaches kept the Mounties in the top 25 which I don’t think our last three or four head coaches could have done. I do think that new blood is absolutely necessary for the KO team, both coaching and players. Fans have forgotten that ANY coach, even the KRAG, could have won big with PW,SS,OW,ND &DR. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it !!!
Perception Outside WV
I live in Pennsylvania (Penn State country), and spoke to folks today who are fans of a number of different teams other than WVU. The pereception among them (and I respect them as legitimate fans, not just casual followers) is that 9-3 is a good record for WVU, and they can’t for the life of them imagine why anyone would want to fire Stew. They respect the wins over Pitt and UConn (believe it or not), as well as Rutgers. So no, the perception of WVU isn’t slipping. If you look at other programs, especially in the years they lost transcendent talent like White, Slaton, and Schmitt, they faltered some too (think Wisconsin after Ron Dayne, VT after Vick, Auburn after Campbell/Cadillac/Ronnie Brown, Tennessee after Manning/Jamal Lewis). Some have bounced back, others have not. The jury is still out on what WVU is going to do.
I think it depends on who you talk to. The people who know football will have the opinion that you’ve posted, where we’re rebuilding after losing a lot.
Many (ignorant) people feel (or are hoping I should say) that we’re in a downward spiral.
I’m somewhere in between. I think that we are under performing compared to the talent we have, and that we aren’t properly utilizing it. I’m also content with the gator bowl, but in the future (given our conference strength and our resources) I don’t see why we shouldn’t be in BCS bowls on a regular basis.
They think it’s a good record for wvu…they weren’t saying the same thing when it was Penn st b/c they have higher expectations.
by The 25314 on Dec 10, 2009 9:21 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
You miss my point.
We always have higher expectations of our own team because we are biased. Often times, outsiders will have a better idea of whether a team has over or underachieved because they look at things objectively. Fact of the matter is, we started the season intakes and finished 16. That’s overachieving, at least in terms of how coaches and the media thought we would be. In the same vein, last year we underachieved. And IMO, the Colorado loss was the most glaring example of that, although we should have beat Pitt and cincy too.

I voted no
Offensively our last game was a clusterfuck. I don’t even want to look up our stats for 3rd down conversions.
Stewart is fine. Not great, but he’s managing the games well enough.
Defensively we ate their lunch, but then again Cuse had what…8 sacks against that line. Their QB did us quite a few favors as well.
Yes, but...
…I’m kind of in Goiter’s camp. To me the bottom line is the record. Given some of the fundamental problems from earlier in the season, I think 9-3 is a great record.
If we get results I could care less about perceptions. But every time we get some momentum and I’m ready to jump on the Stewagon, he (or more likely Mullin) does something stewpid and I revert back to questioning him.
I vote no
I do not approve of the job he is doing.
My major concern is our head coach’s mindset. He spends press conferences lecturing fans by telling us we should be satisfied with our current record. It is not his job to determine with what we should or shouldn’t be satisfied.
Furthermore he continues to defend questionable decisions by saying things like, "some people would have done it this way, but I do it a different way because of (insert cliche or rhetoric).
As the 25314 correctly pointed out, perception is everything in college football, and he is greatly damaging our perception with this goofy (I’m being polite by choosing that word) behavior. Furthermore comments like “all the coach’s were telling me to kick the field goal but I just wanted to win” are bad for perception, but more importantly almost led to a loss against Pitt.
I’m well aware some of the stated concerns are related to prior games, but I saw nothing in the RU game to make me back off my general concern. The super cheerful “everything is going to be all-right” attitude is not the route most successful coach’s take.
I don’t see Nick Saban hugging players after fumbles, actually, I doubt there is a single other coach of a top program who would handle himself like that.
Last night our bball team won by 30, yet Huggins post-game rant sounded like he was ready to yank scholarships. Huggs exudes toughness, Stu exudes a goofy fella who would always do the right thing and never screw anybody over.
Given the choice, I’d take Huggs everyday of the week.
He spends press conferences lecturing fans by telling us we should be satisfied with our current record.
But it is alright for you to tell him, he should not be satisfied with our current record? If you constantly beat someone down, don’t expect them to just take. They should and will fight back. Just deal with it.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Bill Stewart has done a decent job. He’s had an average team for 2 years. He hasn’t ruined anything but the offense. But for people to sit here and say that he’s a great football coach and compare him to the best around the country, it just ludacris. He has done nothing to earn the dogged defense he is given other than merely be the head coach of your favorite school.
There wouldn’t be such a dichotomy of opinion about him if he was truly great. You need to take a step back and realize while we are decent we are far from great. So stop acting like we are crticizing bear Bryant. Stewart hasn’t done anything yet except lash out at people who want wvu to be more than just above average.

WHO COMPARED HCBS TO THE BEST AROUND THE COUNTRY? NOBODY
I said HCBS is doing a better job than his predecessors (RR,DN,BB & FC) did @ WVU. If you look at their records in their first two years ac HCs you will not find the statement ludicrous !
Do you really think there would be no argument about him if we were great?
Have you seen some of the things Florida fans are saying about Urban? They are really worried he will suck once Tebow leaves because his team was not ready to play the SEC championship game. They are freaking out.
There were also arguments about Fraud when he was here. People wanted him fired because he would not change the gameplan.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Standards
While he shouldn’t be praised as if he is bear bryant, neither should he be villified as if he is frank cignetti. Both camps need to be more objective and realistic as to the reasonable expectations for this program.

I voted YES
Reasons? 9-3 and beat Pitt. Going to the Gator Bowl and actually earned the bid by being the #2 team in the Big East.
But before I decide if we should keep him or not I’ll need to see how the 2010 and 2011 seasons play out with his recruits on the field.
slow to post new chart ...
seems like charleywest is very slow to post the new approval chart when coach stew’s approval goes up … seems like he almost doesn’t want to admit to himself or show everyone that it has … but when it goes down he wastes no time posting the results …
