Poll Of The Decade's Best: Safety
Unless there is a late rush to the polls, we have one position set on the all-decade team. Now, it is time to move over to the defensive side of the ball and focus on our secondary. What position should we take up first? How about...safeties! I mean, we do play five of them at a time.
Safety, the last line of defense, or in WVU's case the last person an opposing receiver jukes on his way into the endzone. Just kidding of course, except for Addae.
Remember, after you vote, explain your rationale in the comments section.

Robert Sands
is on his way to being the best player of that group, I think, but I didn’t vote for him. Would like to see his whole body of work. Voted for Wicks – tough call though.
I did
Vote for Robert Sands, because I think by the time he graduates he will be at the top of that list.

I also voted for him perhaps a bit prematurely.
Tough question though.
I made most of my life decisions at a Foghat concert... I stand by them.

Wicks / Lorello
It was a tough call between these two. Their stat lines were so similar. But I still have this image in my head of Eric Wicks flying through the Oklahoma O-line and leaping on Sam Bradford early in the 07 Fiesta Bowl. That one tackle seemed to set the tone for the D the rest of the game. Eric got my vote this round.
Mike Lorello and it isn't even a close
Jahmile Addae would be my runner up. Sands is turning into a great player, but prior to the last few games he didn’t have much of a presence on our defense. He made a good play from time to time, but wasn’t exactly what one would call a standout. Lorello was undersized, too slow, and not strong enough. Somehow the guy took people’s heads off and always seemed to be around the football to make a solid tackle.
Addae had a great physical presence for us on the field. You just knew that if a ball carrier made it to the second level he would likely get hit with a load of bricks wearing #4. Receivers seemed to get alligator arms when playing us as well.
This Is A Much Tougher Question...
I gotta think about it.
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

Brian King...
204 solo tackles
274 Total tackles
10 INT’s
51 Pass Break Ups
He was great.
Leave no doubt tonight! Leave no doubt tonight! No doubt! They shouldn't of played the Old Gold'n Blue.

Problem with voting for him is he didn’t become a safety until a couple games into his senior year when addae got injured. He moved to safety and pacman began starting at corner.

Oh and he let up the Syracuse td with mere seconds left on the clock in 2000 to lose right before nehlen announced his retirement.
But he owned Brian Randall so I forgive him.

He owned VT.
I also thought he played some safety in the ’02 season.
He was really quick to break on passes, which is shown by his holding the school record in pass break-ups. He could play off but was great at reading the QB’s eyes and getting a jump on the pass.
Wick was great but I think King is the best.

ATH-LETE
That’s what Brian King told me he was. I voted for Mundy because given his limited time he was a great leader on a young defense

Brian King
Really similar to Lorello, but played more over his career and always seemed to be there to clean things up
MUNDY
Ryan Mundy, hands down. He was the super-genius glue that took that crappy 2006 defensive backfield and turned them into Top 20 against the pass – we would not have made it to, nor won, the Fiesta Bowl without him. To me, he was the defensive MVP of that squad.
Estrada- only played 2 years
Mundy – only played 2007
Andrews – 3 year starter, perenially in dog house and kicked off the team
sands – only a sophomore
holmes – was kicked off the team for an offseason, played linebacker one year, and while a solid safety his other years, he was never a consistent starter
sid glover – still just a junior
addae- too concerned about the big hit than covering someone
lorrello – great player
wicks – with the picks we can’t loooose. Wicks is the vote. He was a gam changer from his pick 6 against vt in 04 till the fiesta bowl.
( if you are goj g to I include sands, Ricky sherrod and shawn hackett should be included so I can vote against them too)

With holmes I mean he didn’t consistently start. I did not mean he was inconsistent as a player.

I put Sands in there because of his talent.
Of all the safeties listed I think he is the most talented on the field. He has huge size and breaks on the ball very well. If he had been healthy enough to practice all season his stat line would be a whole lot better.
Shawn Hackett stats are a lot better than I remembered. 131 solo tackles in two seasons, not bad at all.

wicks was nice. but i still like lorello.

Jahmile got my vote
He would be playing in the NFL if not for the Heart condition he has
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame
DIck Lebeau, Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel and Chris Carter
I Say Wicks, Lorello, Addae or Mundy...
I think I could make a case for any of them. I am going to split my vote between Lorello and Mundy. Lorello for the reasons The Zip gave above. I agree, 100 percent.
Mundy, because he is playing in the NFL…and none of those other guys can say that, can they? Even though he only played one year, clearly he has a world of talent….
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.
No matter what the people say,

No love for Brian King.
Really Mountaineer fans. Really!
Wow, it really shows how quickly people forget. Last in time first on the mind. He was awesome and almost erased the memory of Perlo Bastien.

I Love Brian King!
…the one armed-bandit!!! I would never forget a kid who had his wrist fused so that he could play…I mean, think about never moving one of your wrists out of a locked position for the rest of your life…
…but, great as he was, I don’t think he was the best safety of the decade….
Now is the time boys to make a big noise.

I voted Mundy.
He really boosted our defense in his one year here, and he has been doing fairly well with the Steelers so far. I think he was largely responsible for solidifying our secondary (guys like Rivers, Lewis, and Williams, who had never really shown much) into a respectable unit. Of course, Lankster may have had something to do with that as well.
Now, Addae was my favorite because he could lay the wood, but the best…has to be Mundy, IMO.
Mundy was probably the best college safety that played here
but the fact that he was only here a year disqualifies him in my book.
Wicks is my pick if for nothing other than his knack for the big play. Pick 6 – or Wicks 6 – was his specialty, but be it diving interceptions or fumble returns for touchdowns he was always there making a huge play when our team needed it most. It’s hard not to call it luck but he was far too consistent for that to be the case.
Lorello was consistent but I don’t remember him doing anything I would consider great very often – if ever. He’s a nice guy, though. Still, I’m surprised he is leading the voting at this point. I always thought Lorello was basically an undersized LB who was technically a safety only because of our unconventional scheme.
