Game Thread For An Upset: #25 West Virginia @ #5 Cincinnati

West Virginia Mountaineers at Cincinnati Bearcats, Nov 13, 2009 8:00 PM EST

Fp4257_medium

It's that time.

Even upside down, the Bearcat looks cute and not at all menacing.  I would expect him to give me advice on a nice pair of shoes rather than try to intimidate me.  Or maybe cut my hair.  You know, something manly.

Luckily for Cincinnati, their team is a little more menacing than a furry mascot wearing shorts.  It will take nearly a perfect game out of the Mountaineers tonight to pull off the upset tonight, but in the words of someone we all knew and loved:

They will do battle as a prohibitive underdog.  But they will play this game with the knowledge that anything can happen in football.  On any given night, on any given field, it can happen.  And they want it to happen tonight!

Guys, if that doesn't get you pumped up, I don't know what will.

Remember, leave your thoughts and comments pre-game, in-game, and post-game.  And as always...

MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!

I find it completely awesome that as soon as I started reading that quote, Jack’s voice popped into my head.

Ditto

These Friday games really put a crimp on my productivity…. It’s hard to type cohesive sentences when you started drinking at lunch.

by Country Roads on Nov 13, 2009 3:43 PM EST reply actions

Ditto to the second power....!

Perhaps because I just watched a video tribute to Jack last week! But awesome! The beer is flowing like wine, and I got a pot of Chili on big enough to feed 50. If any of you are in Williamsburg, Va., where I am this weekend, come on over and join my family, my brother and I.

In the words of bluesman Chick Willis, who we are rocking out to at the moment: “I Got Some Magic For Ya!!!!!”

If you're in Williamsburg...

should we just hop in our canoe and paddle over? You guys got something like 15 inches of rain in the last two days.

Thanks, I’m headed to a friends’ house in Burke…Big Screen TV, but two cats…

You Got That Right....

…it is nasty, wet, windy, and cold here. Hence, the huge pot of chili, and a fridge full of beer! Now, let’s do this thing!

The hills resound...

with the sounds of Mountaineer Football.

AND the sound of The Mountaineers ramming a boot up the ass of the Cincinnati bearcats.

by mountie4life on Nov 13, 2009 3:43 PM EST reply actions

Huh...

drinking… that sounds like a perfectly reasonable idea.

by mountie4life on Nov 13, 2009 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Someone will step up

We have all seen it before… Pat White, Slaton, Schmitt, Wilson, Hostetler, Harris, … maybe it’s Austin’s turn, maybe Lyons, maybe Pat Miller… in big games, the Mountaineers seem to come through… but they have to be up against the wall first, and we are.

by JackSchmitt on Nov 13, 2009 4:11 PM EST reply actions

All the old feelings are back.

I have been critical of this staff. A lot of people have. But here we are, less than 3 hours from game time, and I couldn’t care less about all that stuff. This is the feeling I got before 2003 Virginia Tech, or 2006 Georgia, or 2008 Oklahoma. This is the feeling you get before a huge upset happens.

If you’re not doing anything later, does anyone feel like turning college football on its head?

by Dr. Charley West on Nov 13, 2009 5:18 PM EST reply actions

not going to happen

i bleed the old gold and blue and i’m actually a believer in coach stew but it just isn’t happening tonight my mountaineer faithful. this cinncy team is too good, a old school pat white/steve slaton/owen schmitt team i don’t think could bring these cats down … as many times as i play things over and over in my head we just can’t pull it off and it’s because of marty gilyard. that kid will have three receiving TDs against our defensive secondary and that will be the game changer. we’ll control the front and play pretty good defensive against their running game but gilyard will put the nail in our coffin …

but i do enjoy the faith but when we do lose all those people with high spirits will just yell even louder for coach stews firing … it’s not going to happen people. his job is safe even if we lose out … if we pull a 6-6 season next year with geno behind center then he’ll be on the hot seat and he’ll have to either replace his entire coaching staff or he’ll have to retire and his coaching staff will be fired … but i think we’ll be a fine program with him … we’ll continue to be ranked in the top 25 … we’ll continue to get top 25 recruiting classes and we’ll continue to compete for the big east championship

my prediction for tonight though … unfortunately wvu 20 – cinncy 38 (we wont be able to stop cinncy’s passing game) …

Straight from Wikipedia

Bearcat, is a species of the family Viverridae, which includes the civets and genets. It is neither a bear nor a cat, and the real meaning of the original name has been lost, as the local language that gave it that name is now extinct3. Its natural habitat is in trees of forest canopy in rainforest of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Bearcat is believed to have a horrid fear of the colors “OLD GOLD and BLUE” and its ears have been know to bleed from simply hearing Thousands of Fans Belting"COUNTRY ROADS" .The BearCat is also known to suck the Cock of The Mountaineer, A Majestic Native to The beautiful Mountains of West Virginia, Formed June 20th 1863. The Mountaineer, besides receiving Fellatio from The BearCAt is also know to hand out Brutal Ass Whoopings to the WannaBe Predator Mammal

The wife and I are off to the Lowcountry Alumni Chapter’s Gamewatch party. And I’m ready to party for a Mountaineer victory. I believe that this team has enough raw talent that they can bag this bearcat thing and nail its hide to our wall. I believe.

Special Teams

still seems somewhat of a mystery.

I wish ESPN had a good shot of the kick off team. I find it hard to believe they got the same penalty twice in a row. That’s just poor judgement on the players and the coaches if they let that happen again.

But one quarter down and we have definitely answered their first punch and threw a couple back.

Let’s Go Mountaineers!

Yeah, well special teams include punt coverage…and it is pretty good.

Its real fucking simple. 3rd and 9…you have to throw…fucking have to. You do that and you hope that at the very least Jarrett can get you some yards and put you in a 4th in short. Instead the dumbass puts in one of our midget backs and gets stuffed so cinci then has 4th down to pin their ears back and bring the house.

I’ll say it again: FIRE JEFF MULLEN!

The dipshit calls run after run when we’re getting stuffed with Noel or Jock.

FIRE JEFF MULLEN

He calls a play action after we’re jamming the ball down their throats with Clarke

FIRE JEFF MULLEN

We’re running well with Clarke and he pulls him for one of our little scat (aka shit) backs who dance for a loss.

FIRE JEFF MULLEN

Its 3rd and 9 and he calls a draw with Jock

Anyone who says this coaching staff is good is a total and complete moron. run it on third and 9 then go for it on 4th and 9 when we could have tried a field goal. BTW on the last drive where did the play calling come from? this team sucks

I have voted yes every week to the poll about Coach Stew, but this week I am definitely voting no. I honestly think that 4th down call was one of the worst I have ever seen. To top it all off, we drove down and scored with 39 seconds left. If we hit that field goal, that ties the game. We can’t hit a 42 yard field goal? Has Bitancourt missed all year? Coach Stew and Jeff Mullen, along with the replay official, really cost us this game tonight. It’s a joke.

OH, BS!

You take that view with the knowledge we score later. I think that call was to make it fourth and manageable. Are you drunk? I am. But that FG would not have tied that game.

by JP Fanshawe on Nov 13, 2009 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not true. I was upset at the very moment I saw JB running back onto the field after that run up the gut on 3rd and 9. I honestly don’t mind going for it on 4th, but then don’t act like you’re playing for the field goal on 3rd. It didn’t make sense then and it doesn’t make sense now.

Two Take-aways

1) The score of this game should have been 21-17 WVU. The 12th man on the Cincinnati team tonight was the replay ref in the booth. What a gift.

2) Jeff Mullin should have pounded them right up the middle with Clarke if he was going to call 12 running plays in a row. What a total lack of creativity.

We was jobbed

Overal a pretty good effort, I’m not unhappy with the team’s effort, but:
we was jobbed on the touchdown/fumble
the O-line still couldn’t block sunshine consistently
the D gave up a 99 yard score, and
how the hell do you run a scat-back on 3rd and 9?

what this staff could do with a real OL

by WVUIE97 on Nov 14, 2009 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

I just don’t understand the thought process on our next to last drive. An 8-year-old playing Madden would’ve called that better. This was, however, the most prepared our team looked and the best gameplan our offensive staff has had this season. Mullen seemed to finally get that this team needs to run the ball and minimize the risks that Brown can take. Unfortunately, even at its best, this staff showed once again that they are still not ready for prime-time championship football. They’re getting closer to neutral VORP (or I suppose VORC) …maybe next year they’ll be ready to be a real staff at a big-time D-I program.

by The Double U on Nov 14, 2009 12:02 AM EST reply actions

by WVUIE97 on Nov 14, 2009 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

the best analogy I can come up with:

some people are calling for staff members jobs….ok…posit:

bomb goes off in Iraq (not a good thing, I think we can all agree)
oil and gas prices subsequently go up despite no interruption in supply but because “turmoil in the region threatens the supply”

losing a game → fire the coaches

sure there were questionable play calls, always have been in the past, always will be…nobody calls a perfect game

by WVUIE97 on Nov 14, 2009 12:04 AM EST reply actions

So the fact that oil traders pay attention to threats to the supply-side means that it’s silly to fire coaches after a loss.

AS WVUIE97 points out the team played a very good game and came within a questionable call of upsetinng the #5 team in the nation. Let’s say we fire the whole staff. How do you think we’ll be better next year or the year after? How long was RR there before we won our first bowl game? I say Stew’s crew has that long to get us back to BCS land.

by MtnEer_in_SC on Nov 14, 2009 12:11 AM EST reply actions

agree to disagree

yes they do deserve some time but in all honesty when was the last time WVU fielded a halfway decent defense? since the inception of the 3-3-5 it has either been a show of who can out run our guys or how easily the opposing qb can pick apart zone coeverages. they do deserve time but i for one was questioning the call to go for it on fourth when he made the call to throw. we can say “oh well that garbage review call cost us the game” or “ah that garbage go for it call on 4th cost us the game” fact is there are a number of different things that cost the game. a still young and unable to gell o line, some questionable calls, and some questionable play calling. the only bonus to take from this one was the lack of turnovers. it seems this team can not put it all togeather for 60 minutes. now who is that on? coaching or players?

They have been out coached every week this year, and it has been sad watching it. I don’t think the whole staff needs the ax, but honestly you really think the play calling is good? really? But VTsucks I HAVE watched every game this year

You’re still missing the point. Coaching turmoil does you no good in the long or short term. Set 5 year goals, like get us back to the BCS, give them time to get their kids prepped and playing before you go making radical changes. Stew still has a better than .660 record. Hell, we gave Frank Cignetti four years and he REALLY sucked.

by MtnEer_in_SC on Nov 14, 2009 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’d buy the whole, “give them 5 years” if they came into a situation with players unsuited for the coach’s schemes or they walked into a rebuilding program. I don’t think either was the case. The staff pissed away a beautiful team last year. That team was really, really good and it was made to look really, really average. They were 16/1 to win the national title in August! However, I think Stew should get 4 years. Not because he deserves to coach a team he built, but that I’m not going to pay that guy’s buyout. It’ll be interesting if we go 8-4 next year how many people get behind offering Stew an extension so he won’t be a lame-duck.

by The Double U on Nov 14, 2009 12:32 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think we’ll go 8-4 next year. We’re playing a lot of underclassmen. But I do hope to Gawd we recruit some real DBs instead of converted O-side skill players.

I like the attitude. My observations

2nd to last drive – FINALLY going for it on fourth down, but WTF?
Last drive – except for the check down to Bradley across the middle, an actual hurry up offense!

D-line played MUCH better, just not good enough.
Goal line stands – I understand it’s zone, but I don’t get how telling our 3 linebackers to just stand friggin still and see what happens is a pro-active defense.
Arnett is a great receiver, but he doesn’t appear to be a good blocker. If he was, Noel would have turned the corner for serious yards at least twice.
Did Noel piss someone off at the end of the third quarter? Didn’t see him much at crunch time.

Offense in general wasn’t too bad, which if you compare it to the last three games, is a major improvement. Jarrett did okay, and ran pretty darn well.

Pitt in two weeks. Hope those young men get healthy, hungry, and mean.

—We still control our own destiny for the Big East Championship, as per posters comments last week……….oh wait, NO we don’t

—We still will be 10-2 which is what MANY on this blog said would be the boundaries for acceptability for a team w/ such good talent as this one……oh wait, NO we won’t

Here’s the “bottom line”. Those that want Stewart and his crew to continue coaching this football team WANT Mountaineer football to fail. You want to attend the Toronto Bowl so you can get a t-shirt at Wal-Mart pitting us against UTEP, and not only do you want this, but you want this EVERY YEAR. Those that want Stewart and Co. FEAR success!

That 2 play sequence on 3rd and 4th down was the most embarassing sequence I’ve seen my alma mater perform this season. 3rd and 9 and a run up the middle w/ a 5’7’’ RB. That falls on Stewart and Mullen, period!

by WVUIE97 on Nov 14, 2009 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

I don't need to.....

“go in my hole and wait for the next sniff of blood”……What I said would happen when Bill Stewart took this program over wasn’t a prediction. It was a forecast. This was inevitable and the truly bad thing about last night’s game is that it ended w/ only a 3 point loss and this will make some Mountaineers shrug shoulders and dismiss the loss as “not too bad”.

#1: Your statement of other than offensive skill players, how is this team sooooo talented…..Wait a minute!! This DEFENSE was supposed to be, and I remember you stating this too at beginning of the season, the strength of the program w/ excellent talent and experience coming back from last season.

#2: Am I ever creative enough to say something new?? Creativity isn’t the issue my man. Being right or wrong about the direction of the football program is the issue, and I am right.

#3: Don’t need the links….Quite sure 25134, Charley West and 5th Year Sunshine (named appropriately for his consistent “sunny” outlook of WVU football) all agreed that 10-2 needed to be the record w/ this talent level and schedule…..and they are very reasonable posters w/ a good grip of what expectations should be here at WVU.

If you disagree w/ what I say, then either you want Mountaineer football to fail OR your expectations have already lessened, in just 2 years, by us being a 7-5 or 8-4 football team.

by WVUColumbus on Nov 14, 2009 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

If you don't expect 10 wins a season

w/ the talent level at WVU and especially the Big East schedule, then please root for Virginia or some other irrelevant football program. I appreciate a sense of urgency from Mountaineer fans regarding the current direction of the football program, not ones who will follow Stewart to the depths of the Big East underbelly w/ the likes of Syracuse and Louisville.

by WVUColumbus on Nov 14, 2009 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

$0.02

What, praytell, is the difference between “prediction” and “forecast”?

I don’t recall any of those poters saying that 10-2 “needed” to be the record. My prediction, and I am admittedly a “sunny” poster, was 9-3, which is still attainable.

If you disagree w/ what I say, then either you want Mountaineer football to fail OR your expectations have already lessened, in just 2 years, by us being a 7-5 or 8-4 football team.

Read what you just said there and tell me how that makes any sense at all. You’re saying that if I don’t agree with you, I want WVU football to fail? Because my expectations certainly haven’t lessened.

What you need to learn, my friend, is that expectations should be based in reality. You keep talking about how people need to be objective, but you’re the one with a distorted view of how talented WVU is compared to the rest of the conference and, more importantly, of how college football doesn’t necessarily conform to the way you want it to work. There are hundreds of thousands of variables that play into why teams succeed and fail, yet you want to pin every one of them on the coach without stopping to think of any other causes. Things don’t always go the way we expect them to go, and it really doesn’t do any good to PANIC AND FIRE THE COACHING STAFF AND BRING IN ALL NEW PLAYERS the minute your “expectations” aren’t met.

There are lessons to be learned from observing other programs and schools, such as WVUIE97’s point about Frank Beamer’s record when he first got to VT. How about Pete Carroll? He has lost 3 games (2 blowouts) this year with superior talent. Do you want to fire him? Bill Belichick went for it on 4th and 2 from his own 30 with 2 minutes to go up 6 against the Colts last night. Should he be fired? Charlie Weis made 2 consecutive BCS bowls because he happened to be blessed with an incredible collection of talent he inherited from Tyrone Willingham. Should we go ahead and crown him a great coach? Mack Brown was average at Texas before Vince Young came along and then he won a national title. How do you explain that? Good coach, great talent, or both?

My point is, you don’t consider the big picture. You want to see Stew gone (with no explanation for who you realistically think we should hire to replace him) so badly that you can’t stop and think for a second how large his role is in determining WVU’s win-loss record.

And moreover, you’re so caught up in being right that you say everyone who disagrees with you simply wants WVU to fail. That, sir, is the very definition of being narrow-minded.

Columbus is dead on...

WVUIE97, nothing Columbus has posted is wrong, this blog is filled with a bunch of blinded homers that never see what this program has become, it will only get worse with this coaching staff. If anyone expected this yellow toothed embarrassment of a coach and his awful O-coordinator to outcoach Brian Kelly then they are truly delusional. The only reason it was this close was because of Cincy’s turnovers, they would beat us 9 out of ten 10 times, this team is much better than the score indicated, and we have definitely seen a changing of the guard in the BE.

Only losing by 3 to the #5 team in the country after a bad call on the goal line will only give you homers more hope. You people need to open your eyes to what is going on here, it will not turn around for a long time with this dolt. How long can you people sit back with the mentality “we win as Mountaineers and we lose as Mountaineers”, Bull-fucking-shit. This idiot needs to go, we should demand winning, and we should demand coaches with competence. Don’t you get that the entire sports world laughs at Bill Stewart, he is a buffooon that is ruining this program and needs to step down.

I am done with this awful season, and I am on the verge of boycotting this program until they get rid of this moron. On the bright side Columbus, Toronto is a fun town, and I think we could beat UTEP.

I am ready for basketball, and I am ready to follow a stud hall of fame coach to a national championship. I never thought I’d see the day where WVU football takes a back seat to hoops, thank you Bill Stewart.

At least 5th year will stop with the we control our own destiny farce. And if anyone thinks we have a chance against Pitt, you are wrong, that team is superior to us in all facets of the game, and we will lose another. Held Cincy to 23 points under their season avg of 40...16 under if you count the "Phantom 309" TD

You can second guess the coaches all you want, but give them credit for double teaming receivers and keeping Cincy well under their season average. Most everyone expected the secondary to get torched, and the game plan adjusted to eliminate that. Take away the Phantom TD, and this was a great game. I’m proud of the Mountaineers…they really surprised me by playing so well

for a gee golly gosh willikers good effort you’ll realize that Stewart and Mullen are alone responsible for the loss. Casteel and the defensive staff should get that credit you mention for playing the Cincy offense well in the secondary and holding their point total down.
