The Shotgun/Throwdown: Friday (10/16/09) Edition

3119635462_e40a7c8d79_medium

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Shotgun/Throwdown.  Today we're brought to you by Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout, in honor of the Friends of Coal Bowl.

This just feels like a trap game to me, I don't know what it is.  I just hope we put these pretenders away early and often, like last week.  Weather for the game looks to be rather unpleasant, so bundle up and bring your rain gear.  You may want to bring nose plugs too; a wet Herd tends to smell bad.  Updated TV coverage news inside.  Send in your requests, have a good weekend and see ya at the game...

Reason #988 that WVU is better than Marshall:

He may not have played much in the NFL or won a National Championship, but (warning:  Nehlenism approaching) dad-gummit, nobody electrified this state like the Major (until Herrs Slaton and White came along).

This game is pathetic.

The only thing that has impressed me so far is that the crowd hasn’t started booing yet.

And as I’m typing…Brandon Hogan with an interception! Now make something of it!!!

I don’t think detractors from the current state of the WVU football team think that these wins aren’t big enough “for big enough’s sake”. What I’m saying is that one thing we can all agree on is that we all know we beat Marshall, Colorado and other wins on our schedule, based on the significant talent differences, period.

I feel people are critical because they think to themselves, and I for sure do this, how is this performance going to fare against the South Floridas, Pitts, Cincys, of the world. We all know that simply based on talent, and talent alone, that the basement should be 7-8 wins for what should be considered “bottom of the barrel baseline” based on our relatively weak schedule (although the Big East is way better than the ACC or Big 10….it just is….watch the games). If you have less than this amount of wins = immediate review of the program and probable dismissal BASED ON OUR SCHEDULE (if we played Miami’s schedule this obviously would be revised).

Therefore, 25134, Schmidt, myself and others are probably thinking how this performance would fare against the better teams on the schedule, and I think pretty much all would agree that the following scenario is extremely reasonable based on our overall team play up to this point:

-Likely win vs. UCONN
-Likely win vs. Louisville
-Likely loss vs. Cincinnati
-Likely loss vs. South Florida (based on their awesome DLine and adequate offense)
-Pitt and Rutgers are total question marks right now.

Many of us on here have said that 10-2 is what we’ll allow and I agree w/ this. I think that would be a very good record for this team and anything less is a disappointment…..it just is, because as I stated above 7-8 wins are a given based on talent alone….if we go 8-4 that means that we likely lost to 3 out of the following 4 teams: Rutgers, Pitt, USF, Cincy and when you’ve raised the standards (the way they’ve been raised at WVU….and that’s a GREAT thing) then 8-4 is simply not acceptable under those conditions.

by WVUColumbus on Oct 18, 2009 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

and also 8-4 means that

we would go 1-4 against teams w/ comparable (not better, but just comparable) talent levels as WVU.

Liberty, ECU, Marshall, Colordado, Syracuse, Louisville, UCONN…………I’ve seen all of these teams play, including UCONN just yesterday, and they aren’t close to talent level of WVU….they just aren’t….watch the games, the speed of the players, etc. I think most of you would agree w/ this?

I feel 1-4 against the 5 teams w/ comparable talent levels would be crushing and a significant concern….if we played just to go to the “Walmart Tshirt Bowl”, then fine but thank the good Lord we no longer are THAT program.

Most of us are concerned because it’s reasonable to think that we are closer to 1-4 vs. 4-1 against these 5 comparable talent level opponents based on our level of play.

Finally, this is a VERY reasonable, objective argument that I find difficult to shoot holes in. If one decides to, then I have to question your standards of what you think WVU football should be.

by WVUColumbus on Oct 18, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

it is a reasonable argument

It’s just funny how you’ve gone from “lucky to get to 6-6” and now it’s 8-4

by WVUIE97 on Oct 18, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

it's a reasonable argument, I just don't completely agree with it.

Your argument implies that the ONLY factors in games are player talent levels and coaching. Both of which are very subjective. There are too many other factors that go into games and a knowledgeable fan, such has yourself, has to admit that. Among the other factors include (but not limited to): intelligence, experience, decision making, poise under pressure, health, strength and depth. And these factors affect each player’s ability to perform in differing degrees of importance. That is why your argument doesn’t hold water.

How many arguments...

Do you have to set up just so you can say I told you so. You know 6-6 won’t happen so you create another one where you can blame the coach. You are sad my friend.
