Program in Meltdown: Pitt

Note: This is part three of a four part series. Parts one (Louisville) and two (Syracuse) ran yesterday. Part four (Rutgers) debuts later today.

If that picture doesn't do it for you, let me list all the reasons why Pitt sucks:

I think I got my point across. Wait...

  • Dave Wannstedt

OK, now I got my point across.

When your athletic director has to give you a vote of confidence after the first game, it's probably not a good sign. Especially when you consider that you were ranked going into that game.

Since his arrival, Wannstedt has managed to do less with more probably better than any coach in America. Inheriting a BCS team from Walt Harris, Wannstedt has consistently put together fantastic recruiting classes. While his first full-year class in 2005 was only ranked 42nd, his subsequent classes have been ranked 11th, 8th, and 25th. An untrained baboon could have gone at least .500 with those players, yet Wannstedt is 16-20 at Pitt. Just awful.

Even worse, a fan base full of irrational front-runners has failed to support the team in any meaningul way. Attendance in the Wannstedt-era has never averaged over 40,000, which looks even worse in a 60,000+ seat Heinz Field. These are the same fans that call for Wannstedt's firing. Eventually, they'll be rewarded with a new coach, at which time they will still fail to support their team. Typical Pitt fans.

Either way, Wannstedt is a terrible coach. He only has my respect because he continues to find new and exciting ways to squander both talent and games.

At this point, the only thing Pitt fans can cling to is the sad reference to "13-9." For WVU fans, we're Fiesta Bowl Champions and ranked #8 in the country. We're over it. For Pitt fans, it's all they have.

Just pathetic.

Contrary to popular belief, for some of us the older we get the more we think about the latter and less the former…

I will be the first to say that I am not, in fact “over it.” The 13-9 signs shall invevitably crush my soul, but the epic ass-whooping Pitt will receive this year will help ameliorate such symptoms.

This tells a lot: You can get a 7 game season ticket for …..99.00.

AND, “Close Free Parking”.

Desperate times call for desperate measurers.

I recall when we heard that Pitt was moving to their “Pro Stadium” how it was going to hurt us and recruiting, how they were going to be BIG TIME.

Oh, How we worried over Nothing.

Since that criminal Jackass Sherril left after the 1981 season, Pitt has sucked for the nearly 3 decades since then. Excluding this current 2008 season, these jackasses have averaged a mere 5 1/2 wins per season over the past 26 seasons, even including Walt Harris’ somewhat better performances during 8 of those 26 seasons. If that doesn’t validate how much they SUCK for over a quarter century, what does???

That “program in Meltdown” has just won 2 road games against top ten teams , (WVU and SF) and 3 of the last top 25 teams it has faced.

Some meltdown!!

They beat WVU in 2007 (not 2008), genius! They will get spanked in a rematch this year on 11/28. They beat that fraudulent USF this past week. The best that they will finish in 2008 will be 8-4, unranked, and with an irrelevant bowl game. Well, I guess that’s progress compared to their 5 1/2 win per year average over the previous 26 seasons. Maybe the NFL will want that genius Wannstedt back….yeah right !!! Pitt sucks ass.

Meltdown update 2008—beat WV for the 2nd straight year, finish 9-3, finish in the top 20 for the BCS standings. win 10 of their last 13 after extending the "Stache ", and head for the Sun Bowl against Oregon St.

With Apologies To Randy Edsall, The Big East Remains Mostly Harmless

FILE -- This is an Oct. 18, 2008 file photo showing Connecticut corner back Jasper Howard (6) trying to get the crowd into the game during the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game against Rutgers, in Piscataway, N.J.
