The Morning Shotgun/Throwdown (2/4/08)

Welcome, By-Godders, to the Monday edition of The Morning Shotgun/Throwdown, presented by Knickerbocker Beer. Obviously, today's beer choice is in ode to MVP Eli Manning and the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Seriously, Eli Manning. And MVP. In the same sentence. I'm flabbergasted.

On to the Throwdown!

What You (May Have) Missed:

  • The Real Reason To Watch The Super Bowl: Obviously, the commercials. FedEx was great. Same with E*Trade. Next year, I'm going to start a campaign where, instead of companies wasting millions of dollars on awful commercials, they just give the money to me. I think the idea really has legs.

  • Seriously, Eli Fucking Manning: This is going to take a little while to get used to.

  • Oh Yeah, WVU Played: We have a very winnable stretch of games coming up, including Pitt in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Video of Disinterest:

What To Watch:

  • Louisville @ Marquette: It's just so hard to go on the road in Conference USA and come away with a win.

  • Absenteeism: Apparently, today is the single worst (or best, depending on how hungover you are) day of the year for missing work. Personally, I am 100% in favor of more holidays, which is why I am half Jewish.

The three best commercials were Charles Barkley ad Dwayne Wade’s T-Mobile, Justin Timberlake Pepsi, and Dorito’s where a guy dressed in a mouse costume jumps out of the wall and punches the hell out of the guy who set the mouse trap.

I like the FedEx one with the giant pigeons.

My vote for the best commercials:

Tide pen (the talking stain)
E-Trade (talking baby, the 2nd one was the best with the clown)
Dorito’s (mouse beats the shit out of the guy who set the mouse trap)

No way. Best one was the Pepsi Max commercial, followed by the Coca-Cola balloons fighting for the Coke. Charlie Brown finally comes out on top. It was genius.

I’m gonna go:

1) FedEx giant pigeons.
2) Pepsi JT.
3) E*Trade baby hires the clown.

The Pepsi commercial circa 2000 with Britney Spears, and Bob Dole where she’s like his viagra.

As someone who is in the advertising business Ii am embarrassed that my generation of creatives are coming up with this kind of crap. The Superbowl is the largest ad stage in the world and that’s the best we can come up with?? The 80’s and 90’s were way way more creative. It’s like they are just recycling bad idea after bad idea. Just because you have a talking animal or superstar in your commercial doesn’t make it good. Now we have to see these for another year. Thank god for DVR.

Gotta love Bob Dole in his mid-70s crusing on a 19 year old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt8uNG02ixA

Jesus, Country Roads, you know I have a job.

I was promised recruiting updates, I want recruiting updates! And yes, I know you have a job. But that doesn’t necessarily entail doing work.

Hey Roads the updates are up. It also looks like Stew won’t be releasing the names of recruits until late in the day Wednesday but we will see.
